What She Needs
Jenna Bank's best friends enter her in a contest for two weeks at the ultra exclusive resort Hotel Erotique, and against all odds, she wins. And then against her better judgment, she decides to go...but only for the relaxing sun bathing and pool side restaurant. Not the sex. However, Jenna did not count on Brent Powers, who is her assigned "guide" for the duration of her stay. From their first meeting Brent overwhelms her with his flagrant sexuality, and under his tutorage she finds herself doing things she would never in a million years dreamed of-and enjoying them.
Brent, a trained sexual psychotherapist, never counted on his reaction to Jenna either. She overwhelms his senses and his customary, required, ability to distance himself from a "guest" slowly disintegrates as the days pass. As Jenna is pushed further and further down the road to total loss of inhibitions, he must force himself to take a step back, "for her own good." However, Jenna was never able to participate in sex without emotional buy-in, and she regrettably falls in love. At her limit, she decides to bail while she can, making Brent re-examine his purpose. Can he face his own inner demons, or will Jenna walk out of his life, forever affected by her experiences with him?
Wow. With What She Needs Lacey Alexander has created a book which literally "wows" the reader. Jenna is a likeable character, and her outrage at her friends' judgmental interference is both amusing and understandable. Her decision to go on the all expenses paid vacation is very sensible, especially with the codicil that there will be no sex with strangers. However, within hours of meeting Brent all bets are off, and the reader has to buckle up and hold on tight, as she begins the headlong plunge into total debauchery. With Brent, no fantasy is off limits, no situation too extreme, and no position too naughty. Yet as he encourages her to participate in one scenario after another, each more intense than the last, culminating in an actual orgy, we feel the on-going of conflict within Jenna as she struggles with her undeniable feelings.
We also get insight into Brent's increasing dismay at this development, for even this most amoral man finds himself harboring feelings he claims not to have. Both have had life experiences which have shut them down: Jenna, sexually and Brent, emotionally. The question is whether each can bring their strengths to the table to help heal the other.
Although it does fall a little outside the realm of reality, Ms. Alexander has produced a story which is almost impossibly hot, practically searing the hands holding this book. Do not even attempt to read What She Needs without a tub of well-iced water. Wow. Five Angels + Recommended Read
