Change of Heart by Mary Calmes is a homoerotic paranormal shapeshifter story.

Jin has never been into girls so he didn't notice a woman, Delphine, was in trouble until Crane pointed her out to him. Jin is not a person who can just walk away when someone is in need, so he jumps into the fray. Jin and Crane are both shapeshifters, just as the girl and the men who are following her except Jin is faster and more powerful than anyone they have ever seen. After they rescue her, Jin and Crane take off hoping to avoid any conflicts with the local pack. You see, at the age of sixteen Jin came out to his family as not only gay but a reah, a very rare and powerful shapeshifter. Not only was Jin kicked out of his pack, but his father almost beat him to death. If it wasn't for Crane he would have died. They have been traveling ever since then trying to keep Jin's identity hidden. Each Semel, or pack leader, dreams of finding the reah that was born to be his mate. Very few people ever meet a reah, but Jin is the only male reah that has ever been seen. Things start to unravel when a drunk pack member challenges Jin and he mistakenly shows his abilities and he is recognized for what he is, a reah. Two of the local pack leaders, or Semel, attempt to take Jin as their own, but the law is clear, only the reah's semel has power over her/him, and Jin knows his law clearly. Things quiet down until the last pack leader Logan Church, Delphine's brother, demands to meet with Jin and at that meeting their lives change forever.

Ms. Calmes has created an incredible story filled with suspense, drama, love and family. The difficulties that Jin had to endure were terrible, but it was inspiring to watch how Crane left everything behind to stay with his best friend. The friendship and commitment between them was inspiring. It was incredible to watch how Jin outmaneuvered many of the semel's with his knowledge of the laws pertaining to reahs. The first time Logan and Jin meet it felt like the very atmosphere became charged with electricity as they began feeling each other out. The many explosive and dangerous situations keep the reader spellbound as the story unfolds. I am looking forward to other books by Ms. Calmes.
