Evolution by Carol Lynne is the third book in the Refuge shifters series.

Jarek can't believe that after everything he has been though, all the pain and suffering, he is finally arriving at Refuge, the safe haven for all shifters. The time he spent with Daniel and the suffering they had both endured will remain their bond for the rest of their lives. Now all Jarek wants is the home he has always dreamed of and friends that he can count on. Jarek is smitten with one with Mica, one of the guardians transporting him to Refuge, but there is something different about Mica. Mica as a guardian was brought by Mother Earth, but they have never felt any kind of emotions until recently. Mica feels protective towards Jarek, but he doesn't know why. After his emotional meeting with Daniel, Jarek meets with Maquay, his Cougar king, and learns that things inside Refuge are no different than in the outside world. Maquay demands that not only will he not get his home, but he isn't allowed to interact with any people but his own kind, that excludes Daniel and Mica, or face the consequences. Mica figures out what is going on when Jarek says he can't talk to him anymore. Daniel takes matters into his own hands and invites Jarek over and Jarek accepts even though he knows the consequences, branding and even death if he doesn't follow the rules. Maquay finds Jarek and Mica together after they are overcome by their feelings. Jarek doesn't know if he will survive, but Daniel told him the true king of the cougars Suni is living in exile and Jarek is determined to find him. Mica goes to make sure that Jarek is safe, but all he finds is Maquay who attacks him. Will Jarek and Mica survive? Will Jarek find Suni?

Ms. Lynne has continued her incredible series with this action packed book. I love how the earlier characters are entwined with and enhance this story. The paranormal aspects of this book kept me enthralled as they add creativity and depth to the story. Jarek is one individual who, in spite of all the difficulties that life places in his path, never gives up and always sees the good in others. It was beautiful watching the love grow between Mica and Jarek, but things are not over with. There is still an evil outside of Refuge that is determined to kill them all. Will the people of Refuge unveil their enemies before it is too late? I for one will be waiting for the next book in the Refuge Shifters series.
