Some Place Only We Know
Some Place Only We Know by Christiane France is a homoerotic contemporary romance.

Adam has had many difficulties in his life. His parents died years ago, leaving him all alone in the world. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he decides to help others. On his only day off, he volunteers at a hospice, spending time we the people who have no one else. Afterwards, Adam enjoys hiking around the Niagara Escarpment. The weather doesn’t look very promising, but a quick hike would help clear Adam’s mind. Adam wishes he had someone to spend his afternoons with, and part way up the trail he sees someone he recognizes from the hospice, Domenic. Adam has been drawn to Domenic ever since he first saw him, and when he approaches Domenic things just click. Domenic tells Adam about how he thought his brother was brought to the hospice to get better but he learned that it is just a matter of time until he dies. Adam and Domenic become so engrossed in each other they fail to see the quick deterioration in the weather, forcing them to seek shelter in an abandoned cabin at the top of the trail. They realize that they are strongly attracted to each other, and their night alone quickly becomes a night of unbelievable passion. Adam awakens the next day alone with a cryptic letter about an emergency about Domenic’s brother. Adam thinks it is a “I will call you” type letter, and when Domenic doesn’t call, he thinks that it didn’t mean anything more than a one night stand. Is Adam correct, or is there more going on? Will Domenic and Adam’s love get a chance to grow, or is it the end for them?

Ms. France has created a well written short story using social issues that everyone will understand. Adam’s character shows his caring nature when he spends his free time helping others, but he never thought that he might find the one man for him in such a setting. Domenic is going though a very traumatic time, and in Adam he finds someone who will listen and not judge. Together they create an emotion-charged setting filled with hopefully a promise for the future. I hope that there will be other stories about the lives of Adam and Domenic. Thanks go to Ms. France for a great read.
