Doggy Style
Genna Pangborn’s longtime boyfriend is a gangster who has just been convicted of murder. She has been wanting out of that relationship for quite awhile now, so she sees his incarceration as the perfect opportunity to make a new life for herself. When a stranger approaches her after the trial with a job offer, Genna grabs the chance to make a fresh start. The new job is a dream come true, with one exception: the boss allows his employees to bring their dogs to work, and Genna is deathly afraid of big dogs, even though the dog she has seen around the office seems friendly enough.
When Genna starts having erotic dreams featuring her gorgeous new boss, Jeremy Bruin, she believes them to be harmless fantasy, especially since he comes to her in the form of a dog before changing to a man and making mind-boggling love to her. But this isn’t fantasy, and Jeremy Bruin has his own agenda. His nocturnal visits are all too real, and he does not have Genna’s best interests at heart. He is plotting some sort of revenge, and it may very well get Genna killed for her unwitting role in his plan.
Doggy Style is a light quick story about a woman who is in the wrong place at the wrong time and a revenge plot gone awry. This is the sequel to Ms. Richardson’s novella Dog Walk, which tells Ivan’s tale. Overall, I enjoyed this story, although I have to admit that I did not like the hero. The heroine Genna is a delightful character who keeps up a lively dialogue with herself throughout the story. Getting to know her makes reading this story worthwhile, because she is just plain fun. Jeremy Bruin is a different matter, however. We never get to know Jeremy during this story, but what little we do get to know about him does not cast him in a favorable light. He is cold and calculating and somewhat creepy, and I suspect that if he weren’t so physically attractive, Genna would never have gotten involved with him.
For all the hero’s shortcomings, this is still a fun read. Ms. Richardson has a clever writing style that makes me want to check out more of her work. And perhaps read Ivan’s story.
