To the Highest Bidder
It’s Ben Searcy’s birthday soon and his partner has decided to give him an unusual gift. She bids on and wins an auction and gives him the prize. Why? Because the prize is lunch with Mitch DeSantis, the star of Ben’s favorite TV show.
Ben is very appreciative if unsure about his gift. After all, how do you make conversation with a famous person when you are just an ordinary man? But Ben worries for no reason. During their lunch Mitch is rude and obnoxious, so much so that Ben decides to leave before the main course even arrives, Ben has enough on his plate without dealing with this jerk.
But Mitch has other plans, he hunts Ben down and offers him dinner and an apology to make up for his behavior. When Ben accepts he has no idea that Mitch has much more than dinner in mind, he also plans on having… dessert.
This book caught my attention because I liked the premise, a man gets to meet his favorite actor and discovers that he is nothing like the character he plays on TV; in fact he’s a total jerk. Then it held my attention with the characters and storyline. Nothing new or unusual happens here but it is a darn good story. The characters are just your average everyday people except one just happens to be famous. I liked looking behind the celebrity at the person inside. In the beginning I was just as convinced that Mitch was a waste of space but after coming to understand the reasons for his actions I could almost forgive him. I’m not sure I would have forgiven him as quickly as Ben but it would have happened. It helps that Mitch is one smoking hot guy and interesting once you get beyond the public front. Ben is a normal, likable guy. Nothing special, not even outstandingly gorgeous, just a nice, intelligent man who deserves better than the hand he’s been dealt lately. Becca was fun as the partner and best friend and I wish Ms. Steele could have explored her character more. But with this being a novella it was understandable that she played her part and served her purpose. I liked that the author gave us a glimpse of the future with an epilogue. This is a solid 4 Angel read for me!
