Trouble in High Heels
In Trouble in High Heels, we meet Lori Granger, the sole heiress to a fortune she seems dead set on giving away. Along comes Jackson James, a newly appointed junior in his accounting firm, who is being entrusted with the sole responsibility of reining in the out-of-control charity donations of said heiress. The meeting of the two is fraught with struggles for control, even as their mutual attraction creates a tinder box friction, ready to flame at any moment.
Things rapidly spin out of Jackson's control when Lori orders him to find her a husband in order to maintain control of her inheritance, as per her father's will. They end up retreating to a camp that Lori is trying to support financially and where Jackson is able to get a grip on what makes Lori tick. On a whim, they decide to tie the knot themselves, although neither is willing to fess up to the other their true feelings. Throw in a desperate English Duke, a sultry, condescending Mexican woman and an opinionated lap dog for good measure and watch the sparks fly!
Leanne Banks has brought to life a charming cast of characters with Trouble in High Heels. Lori is adorable and it is easy to feel sympathetic for her causes. Jackson is H.O.T., and while it's certainly easy to feel sympathetic for him, having to deal with what he perceives as the willful shenanigans of a spoiled little rich girl, you really have to feel for him when his pre-fabricated walls come tumbling down, and he realizes he has fallen for her but doesn't believe his feelings are returned. The Duke pulls at your heart strings due to the untenable position his step-mother places him in, trying to make him act as "stud" in order refill the family coffers, but his attraction to the not-quite-maidenly Maria makes the reader root for him even more.
Ms. Banks slowly fleshes out each personality, and with carefully selected bits we are able to piece together a deeper understanding of Lori's fears and motivations, as well as Jackson's ambitions, which are neither blind nor greedy. Of course what they are both searching for is love and acceptance. The question is this: can the illegitimate daughter of a 'floozy' and a multi-millionaire and a man who has fought all odds to achieve his material goals be able to provide this to one another? In Trouble in High Heels, get ready to find out-in the most entertaining way!
