Broken Hero

Audrey Pearson’s life has been turned upside down with WWII. Her once beautiful home, Twelve Pines, is now a convalescence home for wounded English soldiers. Her days are filled with caring for the men that have suffered physically and emotionally fighting for their country. When the handsome doctor, Captain Jake Harding, arrives it is her own emotional well-being that takes a battering.

Captain Harding knows what it is like to have loved and lost and has no desire to go there again. That is, until the charming Miss Pearson breaks through his carefully built wall. To save himself from that kind of pain again, he walks away from the one woman he could love. Could the war keep them apart?

Anne Whitfield’s Broken Hero is a beautifully written story of one-woman fight for love and happiness in a time when England was ravaged by war. Ms. Whitfield paints a picture with her words and draws you into the lives of Audrey and her family as they come to terms with the hardship of war.

Ms. Whitfield’s heroine is strong, caring, and determined to show Captain Harding that love can heal all pain whether it is physical or emotional. This is a wonderful, well-written story that pulls at your heartstrings. You can feel Audrey’s pain at the rejection she faces at the hands of the damaged doctor. Broken Hero is a great read for anyone that enjoys reading 20th century historical novels.
