Masters of the Shadowlands: Breaking Free
After a very bad marriage, Beth is scarred, inside and out. She ran from California and her husband to Florida and has built a business and is beginning to build a social life. As a sub at Club Shadowlands, she chooses doms with whom she knows she can maintain a bit of control. However, Master Z, the owner of the club, knows what she is doing, and he is going to put a stop to it. His ultimatum is to let Master Nolan take over as her dom or lose her membership to the club. Beth is terrified of the huge Master Nolan, but even more terrified of losing Club Shadowlands, so she agrees to the ultimatum.
Nolan sees the obvious problem with Beth, her physical scarring, but he also understands the scars to her mind and soul. He also knows that he will have to push her past her fear to reach the true, sweet submissive laying below all of that pain. As Nolan works with her, he begins to see the fear fall away and the true Beth emerge, all the while he is losing his heart to her, but he doesn't know if he really wants to take on a relationship again.
Then her husband finds her again and the fight for Beth's life is on.
This third book of the series was just as erotically and emotionally compelling as the previous book. I am always amazed when I read a well written BDSM book, because despite the odd dynamics of the relationship, it seems that the Masters care more and are more in tune with the needs of their subs than in a "normal" relationship. Breaking Free fit that bill perfectly, with a seemingly menacing Master Nolan, who not only sees the person that Beth is, not just her scars, but also cares enough to tune himself into her every expression and movement. If we could all be so lucky!
Beth is a strong and pretty woman, though her beaten self-image will not allow her to see that. Her climb up from that nearly self-loathing pit to finding herself and her confidence again made for a touching story.
Ms. Sinclair has proved to me that she is a master at writing, drawing her readers in and keeping their attention throughout her story with realistic people in realistic situations and flowing descriptions making everything seem more like a movie than a book.
