The Unmasking
For two weeks Nancy Appleby, of the Steve Point, Wisconsin police force, has been at the Blackburn College campus. She is undercover as Nancy Crane trying to nab a campus serial rapist. With only two people knowing she is undercover, she tries to observe all her surroundings. As she sits in the classroom listening to Professor Matt Bayfield, she begins to enjoy his lectures. Matt is curious as to why every time he turns around, Nancy is in his presence. He doesn’t make a point in involving himself with his students, but there is something about her that draws his attention. Nancy never imagined finding a professor so intriguing. The closer they become, he wonders is she even aware of the vibes she emits, or how it makes him feel uncomfortable. Nancy likes the cool composure he releases. She never knew a professor could be such a considerate lover. As their relationship slowly builds, he learns about the identity of Nancy. She assures him just as he is an expert at archaeological digs; she is trained at her job. Matt worries at the risk she takes especially if the rapist goes after her. Can the two trusts each other enough to finally stop the serial rapist before Nancy becomes a victim?
The Unmasking is a wonderful story. Nancy and Matt are believable in their actions. I like how determined she is to go through any lengths to nab her suspect. The way Amanda Burns instills thoughts of the rapist by weaving them in and out was created well. She makes her characters human, even at times allowing them to make mistakes and showing their wide range of emotions. There is just the right amount of suspense and intrigue to keep the reader interested throughout the book. There were moments crafted with Nancy and Matt that made the chemistry a little more enticing in this stunning read that kept this reader glued to every page.
