Onikoroshi
Onikoroshi by Augusta Li and Eon de Beaumont is a homoerotic paranormal story.
After Graham and Alan's dangerous adventure, they are taking a work/pleasure trip to Japan. Alan is meeting with Dr. Harada who has studied Japan's ancient history and supposedly has proof that the paranormal existed and was used in ancient times. Alan has them booked into the Amagi Inn, a traditional Japanese hotel with a hot spring, much to Graham's delight. Alan remembered that it is a anniversary of when they became serious about each other, but most important is Graham's acceptance of him and his magic; the obsession almost got Alan killed not so long ago. Alan and Graham go in search of Dr. Harada and arrive at his home, which is little more than a filthy shack. Dr Harada has written evidence of the existence of a demon in ancient times. Alan believes him, but Graham doesn't find any of it conclusive until later that night. Alan and Graham had a wonderful day at the local festival and they decide to go out in the evening, but what they find endangers not only themselves, but also everyone in the area. What is really happening around the Amagi Inn? Does it have anything to do with Dr. Harada's research? Will Alan and Graham find a way to overcome the danger before it is too late?
Eon de Beaumont and August Li have continued their earlier story Tree Fingers with this fast-paced and delightful tale. I love how Graham's love never wavers in spite of the strange and dangerous situations that Alan gets involved in. Things may not be completely his fault, but they are still precarious. I loved how the Amagi Inn and the surrounding area was described it such detail that it came to life for this reader. The descriptions of the O-Bon Matsuri, or festival for one's ancestors, seemed a fitting place for Alan with his desire to study everything related to the paranormal. I for one hope that this isn't the end of Alan and Graham's story.
