The Wish
The Wish by Eden Winters is a contemporary homoerotic paranormal story.
Alfred and Byron have a life together filled with love and laughter until cancer took Byron away. Their last days together, along with Byron's nephew, helped ease Byron's passing. Now Alfred is determined to fulfill Byron's last wish to get their nephews Paul and Alex together with the help of their butler, Bernard. Alex is a product of his upbringing: self centered, egocentric, and very world weary. After his mother dies, Alex was given everything he wanted except a loving home. Paul also lost his parents, but Byron and Alfred were able to have a large impact in his life, while Alex's grandparents kept Alfred and Byron's interaction at a minimum. Alfred did keep close tabs on Alex and understood that there was more to him than appeared on the surface. Unfortunately, the first time Alex saw Paul he assumed that Paul was after something from Alfred in a sordid manner. Alex doesn't remember Paul and leaps to the wrong conclusion. Unknown to everyone, Byron, even after death, has stayed behind until it was time for Alfred to die and to help get his nephews together. Will Alfred and Byron's wish for Alex and Paul come true? Can Alex and Paul look beyond their preconceived notions of each other to uncover their true feelings in time?
The Wish began a little bit slowly, but once all the characters were introduced and in play the plot line really took off. I loved how Byron attempted to manipulate people around thinking that "the end justifies the means", but many times the out comes were not what he expected. Alfred was a very strong character and in spite of his illness, he still manages to be a driving force in Paul and Alex's lives. I was riveting to watch Paul and Alex as their feelings changed from extreme dislike to understanding and passion as they began to understand and care for each other. The ways that Byron manipulated Bernard, the Butler, into doing his bidding was fascinating, but scary for Bernard because he had no memory of doing any of the things. Alfred thought that Bernard was going a little bit senile, but he cared for him just the same. As the story unfolded, my emotions varied from sorrow to elation as the lives of the characters unfolded. Thanks go to Ms. Winters for an incredible story.
