Jolene’s Pooka

During Jolene’s visit to a childhood friend in Ireland, she encounters a talking horse, one that tries to lure her out of her cottage. She resists his alluring call and after some questioning and several different encounters, she realizes that she’s encountered a Pooka, a shapeshifting faery, who seems to want her. Larkin is lonely. Although his kind have all but disappeared from Ireland, fading from human’s memories, he has stubbornly clung to his existence. Searching for the mortal woman who can connect him to the modern world as well as love him, he finds Jolene and must convince her that they’re made for each other.

Jolene’s Pooka is a quick, but intense story about hidden wants and desires. Because he is a Pooka, Larkin can see what Jolene wants – a strong and untamed man who will possess her completely. Yet because she is a strong, modern woman, Jolene can see that Larkin needs someone to push him into returning to the human world and not fade away from human memory. Ms. Hill’s writing is once again sensational. Although developing a relationship in such a short story is difficult, she does a credible job – I just wanted more!
