Never A Sunset
Finally graduating from Harvard with her M.A. in finance, Victrina Mechnikoff is approached by Michael Levine, a rich businessman, to be his personal assistant and manage his financial empire. All she has to do is sign a five-year contract, be absolutely loyal, and – just a minor detail – never, ever, tell anyone he is a vampire. Victrina is sure Levine is a nutcase, but she has him investigated anyway, and comes up with the information that he is indeed rich, with many investments. Of course, he couldn’t be a vampire – that was ridiculous! But Michael is being entirely honest with Victrina – if she could only bring herself to see it.
This short story follows the classic vampire plot -- vampire falls in love with girl, vampire gets girl, vampire loses girl, etc. What makes this tale interesting is the descriptive skill of the author. Ms. Blysse paints scenes in such far-flung places as Boston, New Orleans, Paris, Alaska, and Nevada with verve and feeling. Probably because of the short story format, the story seems to skip around too fast, and it is sometimes hard to follow from one scene to the next. Furthermore, while Michael and Victrina are engaging characters, they suffer from too much of that classic romance affliction: non-communication. The sex scenes are moderately explicit, climaxing with the thrill of the vampire’s bite. I thought this was an interesting story, well worth reading for aficionadas of the genre.
