The Treekeeper brings to life a new world that is steeped in tradition at the expense of the very person they depend on.

Kayana was chosen at an early age to be the next Keeper. She has felt honored by the trust implicit in the people’s decision to place her in such an esteemed position. Yet, even as she fulfills the wishes and needs of her people, a longing she can’t explain besets her.

When Maddox arrives bestowing what no other has thought to give, long suppressed emotions begin to stir. As they meet in secret, she knows that they are risking not only their own lives, but also the future of an entire world, yet she is helpless to resist. Can the Treekeeper turn her back on her people, on duty and tradition; or will she be forced to give up the first person that has seen beyond her position to the woman beneath?

Natalie Damschroder offers a quick glimpse into a fascinating new world with her short story The Treekeeper. Her imaginative setting and apt descriptions color a vivid picture for readers. Her imagery blends nicely with the emotions Kayana and Maddox discover. Kayana is a refreshing female character. She displays a combination of innocence and suppressed sensuality that pairs well with Maddox’s modest yet passionate personality. The love scenes between them are sensuous. Readers can perceive that they both know what they are doing is wrong, but just as the characters can’t resist, readers will be unable to adhere to tradition at the expense of true love. The sacrifices they are willing to make are touching and the ending the author brings about is a testament to friendship and love.
