Velvet, a photographer for Depalma Agency, knows she has to find her friend Jamie. She disappeared the night of the Halloween Party and even though Velvet had asked around at the party to see if anyone had seen Jamie leave, she received very little useful information. Going to Jamie's apartment to pick up the mail, Velvet is grabbed from behind; terrified she fights back to no avail. Ending up on the couch with the assailant on top of her; her terror is lessened when he tells her not to scream, it's Trevor. Trevor is a man from her past, a man that has the ability to make her feel that out of control passion, yet his appearance in Jamie’s apartment doesn’t make sense. What's really going on at the agency, with Jamie's disappearance, and why is Trevor really back in Velvet's life? The longer Velvet looks for Jamie, the more she sees things aren't what they appear to be. It could mean her life if she keeps searching, can she find the answers before something happens to her?

Trevor has wanted Velvet ever since she had got engaged to his roommate Elliot. Now he needs Velvet’s help to find out what has happened to Jamie. Only he can't tell Velvet the real reason why he is searching for her. When he and Velvet are together, the passion they feel explodes, he hopes he can convince her to stay with him, that this isn't just an affair. The closer they get to solving Jamie's disappearance, the more dangerous it is for Velvet. Trevor wants to protect her, but he also needs to find the answers. Knowing that he can trust Velvet with his secrets, he’s just afraid she won’t trust him after he tells her the truth. Will Trevor lose Velvet once she knows the truth? Can he keep her safe and find Jamie without getting any of them killed? What is really going on behind Depalma Agency's doors?

Ms. Ross has again taken readers to a place as only she can do. The characters as so well written and the atmosphere is described to such perfection that the readers' surroundings will disappear. I cannot pick just one scene that stands out as my favorite because they are all so exquisitely written. Once again I'm on pins and needles waiting for her next novel. I highly recommend this to readers, even to non-suspense fans.
