Life as an intuitive psychic has never been easy for Vanessa Moore. “Van”, as she prefers to be called, feels that her abilities complicate her life so she usually tries not to use them. She has misinterpreted some of her visions in the past, and blames herself for the deaths of two people, one of whom was her younger sister. When she inherits a furnished old Victorian house in Ohio, Van is thrilled. She intends to take her time packing up and selling the place. While she is there, she will stretch her abilities by trying to gain a sense of its many former inhabitants. As soon as she arrives, Van senses that she is being watched. She is sure that the drop dead gorgeous man is a former boarder of her deceased uncle’s, and is unwilling to believe that he could be anything but a flesh and blood human. He has quite a mesmerizing affect on her, and the sexual urges she feels for him are almost overpowering. She finds it difficult to sleep in the house and can sense that there is evil lurking. The vision she has of a hideously scarred woman making love with a handsome man is quite disturbing.

The man is an entity, created in another era by a witch for her own pleasure. He has waited for over two hundred years to be made mortal or be obliterated. He is trapped in a state of limbo and rarely can he communicate with anyone but the demon who torments him. The demon has successfully thwarted his many attempts to become whole by killing female inhabitants of the house in which he is bound. Immediately he knows that this woman, Van, is his creator reincarnated. Now he must find a way to protect her from the demon, whilst he convinces her to release him.

The ancient diary that Van unearths in the attic was penned by a young girl who studied witchcraft. A childhood disease had left her scarred and unmarriageable, so she created an imaginary boyfriend. Van is unsure of what to think of the girl’s tragic life and now wonders if the man could be the adolescent’s conjured lover. The entity believes that if Van can see him, she will be able to release him, so begins a relentless course of seduction. It gradually dawns on Van that this entity had protected her in her childhood and as she matured, made perfect love to her in her dreams. Deep in her heart she knows and loves this man. She must repay her debt to him by learning how to help him move on. There is a strong chance that she may never see her love again when he is finally “named.”

Readers who enjoy the paranormal and new age theories are sure to become hooked on the work of this new author. Cher Mason’s idea of a conjured lover being linked to a reincarnated soul is quite original and keeps the plot fresh. Although this reader found that one or two scenes did not mesh with the previous, these were easy to overlook as the heroine’s urgent drive to right the wrong became the focus of my reading. Cher Mason believably combines supernatural and spiritual elements into a contemporary setting. Her characters’ present day attitudes towards some highly unusual circumstances are realistic and invoke responses from the reader. Love’s Creation is an intense and thought provoking story, sure to keep readers rapidly turning the pages of the final chapters deep into the night. Cher Mason’s debut novel is unusual and unforgettable; I eagerly await more from this author.
