S.A. Martin Interview
Fallen Angel Reviews would like to welcome S. A. Martin!! Welcome Shirley and congratulations on your newest release Dream Weaver.
Would you tell us a little about yourself?
Jennifer, first, thank you for having me here. I've been writing for a few years, something I love to do. I began writing historicals but now write paranormal and fantasy, both so much fun to write. Since I am a widow, I live alone, except for my two cats.
How long have you been writing?
You could almost say I've been writing since high school. I've always enjoyed putting my ideas to words and I have a terrific imagination.
Did you always know that you wanted to be a writer?
I've always loved to write. What got me started writing professionally was years ago, I had a terrible back problem and told myself if I ever got better, I would do something worthwhile with any free time I had. So here I am!
Is there any particular person or author who inspired you to write?
Not really, just me.
Your writing tends to favor historical and paranormal genres. Do you have plans on writing a different genre in the future?
I just finished a fantasy, one I'm very happy with. In it, the heroine has preternatural powers. She has out-of-body experiences and is psychic.
Your newest release Dream Weaver is available now from New Concepts Publishing. Could you tell us a little about this story?
I love this story. After I finished my historical, High Wind Rising, I wanted to write a sequel but also wanted to write a time travel. So I thought, wait a minute! I can combine both. So Dream Weaver has some of the same characters as High Wind Rising and takes place a few years after. It's about a woman who has troubling dreams of a lonely cabin in the woods and tall, dark man she's never met. While visiting a restored village---one she suspects is connected with her dream--she is flung back in time. The hero, Christian, is a doctor. She realizes shortly after her trip back in time that she must save his life in the coming battles with Indian tribes. As my blurb says, She failed him once before. She can't fail him again.
So this deals with reincarnation, too.
Was Dream Weaver your first attempt at writing time travel and did you find it difficult to write?
Yes, it was my first time travel romance. I enjoyed writing it but believe it or not, even time travel romances demand some research. I read a lot about medicine and smallpox. The events in the novel at Fort Pitt actually happened as I portray them. While the Indians besieged the fort, a smallpox epidemic raged there.
What other books do you have available?
As mentioned, my historical romance, High Wind Rising. I love all my books, feel an affinity for all of them. This takes place in colonial Pennsylvania, as does Dream Weaver. All of my books have garnered excellent reviews. My vampire romance, One More Tommorrow, is another one I greatly enjoyed writing.
It's about a vampire who falls in love with a mortal woman. But the demon who heads the vampire society threatens to kill her if the hero, Galan, has anything to do with her.
Are you working on anything now and maybe gives us a sneak peak?
Just finished the fantasy wherein the heroine has preternatural powers. I hope to start on another vampire romance that is also a fantasy. By that I mean, it will take place in an imaginary world with magic. May have a witch or two also.
You have to have an amazing imagination to write paranormal stories. Where do your ideas come from?
They come from just that--my imagination. I have ideas all the time, mainly for paranormal and fantasy romances. I have so many that I've written the ideas down so I won't forget. I keep a tablet and pencil by my bed in case I get any ideas at night or early in the morning.
Have you ever based you characters on somebody you know?
No, I like to imagine all my characters. Something I've found to be true--my characters have a mind of their own. Just when I think they will do one thing, they do something else. My husband could never understand that, but I think it's something all writers experience.
When you are not writing, what do you like to do? Do you have any hobbies?
I love going for walks and I find that's a good way to clear my head, especially if I have writer's block. Also, like to grow orchids and other plants. I have orchids hanging on my back fence. Here in Miami, they can stay there all year long, except for the few cold spells we have. If there is a hurricane, I have to take them down and inside.
Do you ever find the time to read and who are your favorite authors?
I enjoy reading. Probably my favorite author is Dean Koontz. Also like Mary Higgins Clark and Terry Brooks. Also Terry Goodkind. And oh, yes, Catherine Asaro.
Is there anything else you would like to add to this interview?
Just want to say "thank you" and I hope everyone will visit my website and look over my books. I think you'll find some great reading there, I say in all modesty.
