Delilah Devlin Interview

Hi Delilah Devlin,

Thank you so much for taking time out and interviewing with us at Fallen Angel Reviews. We appreciate your time…

What are you working on right now?
I'm working on My Immortal Knight 2: Love Bites, the sequel to my current release Love Bites. Joe Garcia, a cop who was turned into a vampire by the boyfriend of the woman he loves, is searching for a way to reverse his transformation. His search leads him to Lily, an expert in vampire lore. He's sidetracked when he discovers Lily may be more than she seems.
What book that you have written is your favorite?
My favorite is MIK-2: Love Bites, which is my current release. I think I managed the perfect blend of my favorite genres-action-adventure-police drama-vampire-romance and comedy. Honest-the book is not all over the map! It really works! I loved my sexy hero. Quentin stayed in my head making sexy promises with his yummy Brit accent the entire time I wrote the book.
Which one took the longest time to write?
Slave of Desire. I was very ill during the entire time I wrote the book. I think I started the book in April and was diagnosed with Graves Disease in the May. I felt terrible before, but after my thyroid was radiated, I had to stay in bed for an entire month. I wrote the bulk of Slave four lines at a time-four lines, take a nap, four lines, etc. It was a very painful process completing that book.
Do you have a favorite character?
I love Quentin for obvious reasons. He was very Alpha, very sure of himself and his attraction. When Darcy resisted he was brought down a peg. Watching him a fall in love was a lot of fun! But Emmy from MIK-1: All Hallows Heartbreaker has to be my very favorite character. I heard her in my head for months before I ever started the book. She was a arriving at a Halloween party and muttering to herself about her too-tight bustier and wishing she were anywhere but in that noisy disco. She's the kookiest character I've written to date. Plump and very self-conscious of her weight (I can so relate!), her insecurities made her very real and appealing to me.
Are there any characters that you relate to and if so How?
Parts of me all are in every heroine I write. Evena (Prisoner of Desire) and Darcy (MIK-2) are my "professional" persona-kick-ass, sometimes bad-tempered, and clueless how to relax. Emmy (MIK-1) and Lily (MIK-3) are my "blonde" side-kooky, funny, and whimsical. Yes, I have a split personality to go along with my schizophrenia!
I was checking out your website and noticed all the different places you have been to. Do you have a favorite and what is it?
Of course, I love Ireland. My husband's family lives there and I visit as often as I can. It's lovely, lush, and has such a relaxed atmosphere (maybe that has something to do with the fact I spend most of my visits in the pub!). I also love northern France and southern Germany. It feels like home. I'm convinced I lived a past life there (my ancestors are from that region too! Maybe genetic memory?) But if I had to choose one place on the whole planet to live it would be somewhere near a beach-doesn't matter if it's Ireland, Florida, Greece... I need the sound of the sea and wild storms.
Do you have a favorite genre?
Erotic romance with comedy, of course! I can't be more specific. I'm published in futuristic and vampire, but I've also written medieval, contemporary, and Western. I write what I dream.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are Julie Garwood and Dara Joy. I love Ms. Garwood's ditzy heroines and confused mega-Alpha males in her medievals. I love the sensuality and imagination of Dara Joy's futuristics.
Can you tell us a little bit about Garden of Desire?
This is the third book in the Desire series. In the Prisoner of Desire, the first book, we see the pirates capture a prison ship to liberate the female convicts, because they need wives to help them at colonize a planet. In book three we see the young colony under the leadership of ex-pirate Cantor Marlowe. Poor Cantor is drowning in femininity. Perfumes assail him morning, noon, and night. And the voices! High and trilling when calling to attract his interest. Low and throaty when whispering dark and sexy promises in his ears. Loud and strident when bringing their never-ending complaints for him to resolve. Who would have thought the ex-cons they liberated would have so much to complain about in paradise? 'Tis no wonder he itches to go a-pirating! Enter the heroine. Martha knows how to pick a lock. What the little thief can't figure out is how to steal Cantor's heart. When Cantor's head is turned by the arrival of an innocent harem girl, Martha fears she's lost her chance at love until the girl turns to Martha for a little lesson in love. While Martha and her new best friend set out to seduce the stubborn pirate, Cantor discovers a dragon in The Garden.
Can you give us a taste of My Immortal Knight II Love Bites?
The best way to give you a flavor is to provide to you a "sound bite" of the chemistry between Quentin and Darcy :
Quentin's stomach growled and he recognized the aroma of streaks frying on a grill. He rolled out of bed, intent on halting the group from cooking the essence out of a perfectly bloody steak.

But there was the problem of a lack of clothing. He refused to contemplate donning the rumpled orange uniform he'd tossed in the corner of her closet. And there wasn't any sign of his bags. He grabbed a towel from the bathroom, knotted it around his waist, and headed for the door.

As soon as he swung the door wide, all eyes turned to him.

"Now that's your color," the large, beefy man named Max said, biting the side of his lip.

Quentin swept the room with a glare and hitched the pink bath towel higher. He spotted his bags next to the door. As he retrieved one, chuckles followed him.

Quentin stalked toward the privacy of the bedroom to change when the door to the kitchen swung outward and Darcy strode into the room.

Her gaze raked over him, and her cheeks flushed.

Joe, her partner, followed her out, and his arm curved around her waist. By the interested stares from the rest of the team, his gesture wasn't a common occurrence. Joe intended to mark her as off limits to Quentin.

Quentin smiled and let go of the towel.

Darcy froze, but her gaze dropped to his cock.

Quentin took his time unzipping his bag. He pulled out a cotton shirt and blue jeans and dressed.

Darcy glanced away and folded her arms over her chest. Her mouth drew into a tight line. If not for the spots of bright color on her cheeks, Quentin would have thought she'd been unmoved by the sight of his naked body.

"We don't hold with vampires flashing their privates in our homes," Max said, his rough-hewn features hardening to stone.

"Since, my privates have been a subject of some scrutiny by this group, I didn't think you'd mind," Quentin replied to Max, but his gaze didn't leave Darcy.

Max cleared his throat. "We're having steak and potatoes before we head out for the night. That artist will be over here shortly to get your description of our perp.

"Yummy," Quentin replied.

"The steak or the artist?" Darcy asked, her chin lifting.

"Neither." His gaze swept over her, telling anyone who looked he'd much rather have her.

Every male back in the room stiffened.

Darcy turned to the door and opened it wide. "Come choose your steak," she said between gritted teeth.

Quentin moved to follow, but Joe stepped into his path.

"The lady invited me," Quentin said.

Joe's gaze narrowed. "I'm in charge of the fire. I'll be right behind you."

"Going to make sure I fall on a stake?"

Following Darcy's straight back through the kitchen and into the back yard, Quentin knew the two had a bone to chew. His hopes for a rollicking night between the sheets with the lady cop were dwindling.

When the outside door closed behind Joe, Darcy rounded on Quentin. "I'd appreciate it if you'd keep your sexual innuendoes to yourself."

Quentin stepped close to her. "Why so bothered, Darcy?"

Her glower could have scorched the sun. "I have to work with these guys. If they knew-"

Quentin caught a whiff of an aroma other than steak coming from Darcy's person. He stepped closer and inhaled. "If they knew what? That I fucked you senseless in the shower, and then you crawled in bed with your partner?"

Her eyes widened. "I didn't-"

Quentin raged. She'd turned to another as soon as she'd left him. A human male, at that! "How could you go to him with the scent of me still on you skin? And my cum dripping from you?"

"That's enough," Joe said, shoving Quentin away from Darcy.

"Joe." Darcy's stricken gaze held her partner's for a long moment.

Disgust was written in the sour curl of his lips. "I'll be in the kitchen. Yell if he needs killing." Without a backward glance, Joe left Quentin and Darcy alone in the back yard.

Darcy's eyes narrowed and she pointed her finger at him. "Now, look here. We fucked. That doesn't give you any hold over me. I could screw an entire football team, and it wouldn't be any of your damn business."

Quentin drew in a deep breath to let loose on her, then realized he was angry-over a woman. He's shared dozens, no hundreds, of women in his lifetime. Why not this one? Then he realized what she'd just said. "While I share your bed, there will be no footballers anywhere near you."

"Footballers? Football players, jerk. And I didn't say I was going to share your bed."

Quentin stepped closer and caught her by the waist, pressing his lower body hard against hers. "Aren't you?"

"You arrogant ass-"

"Such language! Mustn't let your temper fly, love."

She wriggled to escape his hold, but he held her fast. "That's it! I'm gonna take you down. You and the batwings you flew in on!"

Quentin kissed her. Her hands pushed at his chest, but her lips told a different story. They melted beneath his.

He lifted his head. "Are we having our first row?"

"You bet your ass!" Her hands tugged at his hair and pulled him down for a second kiss.
Do you believe in Writers Block?
No. I believe in burnout, which can cripple a writer. For me it means not wanting to write-not that I can't. I'm approaching it now since I'm working on a very tight deadline. I have to find something to be enthusiastic about in my current project. Something that stirs by creative juices. But to get there I have to be disciplined. I have to be in front of the computer, typing words-- even if they aren't the perfect words.
How long have you been writing?
Since my mid-life crisis when I figured out what I want to do with the rest of my life. That was January 2000.
What does you family think of your writing?
My husband is very supportive, although he rolls his eyes at my choice of genres. There aren't many people he could tell about my success! My children think my career is extremely weird and funny.
Who is your biggest fan? Critic?
My biggest fans would have to be a couple of critique partners who eagerly await each new chapter I write and still by the finished books. I love Jenn and Allie! My biggest critic is me.
What would you like your fans to know about you?
That I'm the real deal. If I write an action sequence, I do it from experience-fourteen years in the military. The sexy banter comes straight from my husband. My books also reflect my personality. I can't write paragraphs of introspective angst. Flowers and mushy declarations of love give me the heebie-jeebies! I prefer that a man show me he loves and cherishes me with his actions.
What do you do in your spare time?
Spare time? I work full-time and write the other half of my waking hours. Someday, I would like to spend more time traveling.
Any advice for authors looking to be published?
My advice is to spend time developing your voice and figure out what you like to write. If you're jazzed with your story, it comes across and readers will believe you.
Where do you characters come from?
The heroines are parts of my split personalities! The heroes are men I've known while in the military, my husband, our many cop friends, etc.
Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
In 10 years, I see erotic romance as one of the leading, best selling genres in the world and Delilah Devlin will be one of Queens of the genre! I believe in my talent and myself, and I'll work hard to make it happen.

Thank you so much Delilah for all your support at Fallen Angel Reviews.
We appreciate your time, you talent and your wonderful books..
