Deborah Lynne Interview
You started writing stories in the first grade, what were they about and do you still have any of them? When did you know you wanted to be a writer and was the romance genre your target?
I wrote three or four sentence stories. LOL. Like "See Jane run the horse." When I was in high school, I read and loved Fantasy and Romance. It was during those years that I read a book in both genres that I wanted to end differently. That is when I picked up a pencil and started my own books.
How long did it take for you to conceive the idea for your first book and complete the manuscript?
My first books will never see the light of day. (Big grin). But as for The Dragon Laird, I wrote it within a year and had started my second book in the series.
When and where did you become enthralled with the paranormal or Dragons?
I don't remember a time when I wasn't enthralled by dragons, fairies, the evil trolls. I also loved the adventure they bring to the reader.
What started you on the path to writing about Dragons?
I used to play Dungeons and Dragons in school and remembered the adventures we came up with. It only missed the romance mixed with the adventure so I took everything I enjoyed and put them into one book.
Is this the only genre you're interested in writing? And if not what other interests will you be exploring in the future?
No, I have historical romance under the pen name Caitlyn McReynolds with my agent. The title is Dark Desire. An excerpt of it can be read on my website at
DeborahLynne.com But this is all in the works nothing sold as yet. I do have a Vampire Anthology coming out in October this year. It is very hot. Title is
Night of Surrender An excerpt can be read on my website as well.
What quality in your writing do you think draws in a reader?
Fast paced, adventure with a very sensual romance. That is what I love, so I try to write the same thing.
What do you find most rewarding about being a writer?
Emails from people who have enjoyed my books. My fans mean so much to me and I'm always grateful for the notes I receive. I have a gift page for my reader on my web site. Just a thank you.
Some people write because they have a story that just needs to be told or wished something had been done differently in something they read….What inspires or motivates you to write a story?
Yes, that is how it started for me, but once you have an idea it blooms and grows. So ideas come at you even in the middle of the night.
What is your Long term goal that you really, really want to happen? Something that you have always dreamed about, this doesn't have to be about writing.
I'm very close to my long term goals this year. I have a large named agent working for me, and three big house publishers who want to see the second book in this series. Also, The Dragon Laird was nominated for Romantic Times Book of the Year 2003. A Reviewers Choice Award. So, if you keep working, dreams do come true. It's very exciting.
Do you find promoting and selling your work a difficult task? I ask because ebooks are still relatively new and you do not have the backing you would normally have in the print published area. Or do you?
My book came out in ebook first and was a top seller. Then it came out in paperback so I have seen both sides of the coin so to speak. They have too different sets of buyers. So selling ebooks is not hard. You need to just let people know its out there by announcements.
How do you feel being an editor impacts your writing?
It helps me give myself a better edit. Practice makes anyone better at what they do.
I note you are a founder of Taylor's Writing Guild. Could you please tell us some more about it?
I teach writing to beginners. Help them find what genre they wish to write. We do writing exercises and learn to market their books. There are four steps to the class and I enjoy seeing writers grow and develop.
How do you juggle all these projects and family life or personal time?
That is a hard question, because sometimes I get behind. You have to be organized. I set times and duties so all things are seen to. I do edits during the day and between my real-estate company calls and appointments then write late at night when my two year old and eight year old are in bed. They are good at helping me get my promo things out after school.
What is your favorite substance to lick off your partner?
Ohhh whipped cream and donut jelly. LOL. But I don't complain with anything sweet. Then again, I like to be the one licked. (Evil grin)
And my last question is….what do you do to relax or as a hobby and how long have you been doing it?
Read. I love to read. Romance, fantasy, sci-fi, and action packed books. I also collect music. I love looking for that next song I can use to write that next book.
I purchased both of your books and I really enjoyed both Dragon Sorcerer and Dragon Laird. You have created a wonderful saga of Dragons and the world you are exploring is a fascinating and exciting one. I visited your web-site and read about your other upcoming books, I am now greatly excited and anticipating reading them.
Thank you for taking the time to do this interview.
I am so glad to here that. Thank you for asking me. You have a wonderful web site. And I look forward to sending you my next for review.
