Audrey Godwin Interview

Audrey Godwin is known for her dark and sensual writings. Brothers of the Night, Cast a Moonlight Spell, and Pretty Baby which are all available at New Concepts Publishing. These are just a few of her published works. With three new books available now at Renaissance Books and three books to be published soon from eXtasy, Audrey has been very busy!

Audrey, thank you for taking the time to talk to us!
To begin, can you tell us about Sugar Moon, just out this month from Renaissance Books?

Sugar Moon is a very dark and intriguing story. It's the old traditional "making a deal with the devil" tale that you may think is very predictable. Don't make that mistake. The characters are not what you expect, and there are a few twists and turns in the story that are very unique. One thing about my books... you have never read anything even similar to them, and when you find that the setting of Sugar Moon is that of a dark, foreboding nursing home, you might be fooled into thinking this book is about old people. That couldn't be further from the truth. Broc Sanford is a white-haired old man that reminisces about the woman he loved and left behind. On the eve of his death, he has a shadowy visitor that promises him youth, as well as one hot, scorching night with the woman he loved and left behind. But when Broc sees her again, he can't let go. He wants to take her away and begin again. But that would mean a battle with all the demons in hell!
You have three coming soon from eXtasy, Rogue President, Sweet Hell, and a Tarot series release, Teneder Lightning. So we have a lot to look forward too. Can you tell us a little about each book?

Rogue President: I can hardly wait for the release of Rogue President. I know you'll love it. It's a story of dark power, illicit liaisons, and a charmer who rises to the top of the political ladder to become President. He's a charismatic young man, a sexy sophisticate that is plagued by a tragic past that makes him hate redheads. An arranged marriage links him with a sweet southern belle who is a redhead, and more than he can handle. As a result, he falls into an aching love, but too late. A Texas beauty enters the picture and threatens his happy home while he becomes addicted to naughty sex that leads him into the lowest regions of hell!

Sweet Hell: Sweet Hell is a wildly sensuous tale filled with sex, power, forbidden emotion, and dark-as-night passion. It will arouse you, stun you, and make you gasp! "Nymphomania!" the doctor declared. The word pounded at her, screamed in her ears, echoing over and over again. She cried, enduring taunts such as, trash, whore, and slut that were hurled at her like stones. She wanted to tell them… try and make them understand, but how could she? What words could she use to explain that God maybe, or was it the devil... had lit a fire... and put it between her legs!

Tender Lightning: eXtasy books came up with an idea for writing some short stories about each card in the Tarot Deck. I had a story that I was playing with about a magician that seemed to fit, so I set about writing it. By the time I finished, it was the story of a young woman who was a voracious reader of romance novels. One night on a dark and lonely road, a bolt of rogue lightning propelled her into the pages of her novel. The intrigue is dark, and the gothic flavor is delicious. I just got through with the edits, and it is about to be released. You will find it on eXtasy's "Coming Soon" page.
Most of your stories have a very gothic tone to them. What is it about that type of atmosphere that intrigues you?

Being a fan of the gothic, you might think I would write historical novels, but someone told me once that if I could bring the ambience of the gothic into the 21st century, I would have a seller. Apparently, they were right, because when I did that, my writing took off, and hasn't stopped yet. Apparently, I'm not the only one who likes the gothic flavor... ghosts, witches, a raging ocean, darkness, full moons, and a lonely howling in the distance. Brrr!
Where do you get most of the ideas for your stories?

Ideas can come from anywhere. Dreams, conversations, TV, other books. I love the brooding south, and my favorite film is Gone with the Wind. Since no one will ever touch it, I did the next best thing and wrote the other side of the story... the dark side entitled, Brothers of the Night. I've never enjoyed writing a novel like I did that one. The ideas flowed out of me like water. I dug way down deep inside myself... to everything I'd ever seen, or heard about that period and gave it a twist of horror to fit my story. Some people are natural storytellers. I hope that description fits me.
Who has been your most difficult character to write and who has been the easiest?

I think Franz Staresini, the elusive magician in Tender Lightning was my most difficult. I really had to dig down into his psyche to understand him, but I think it was a real triumph. The easiest was the twin werewolves in Brothers of the Night. I enjoyed who they were, and could even understand them. Even though I had to jump from one to the other, it gave me so many opportunities to surprise my readers. Lance Duquesne was my favorite twin, and he was plainly the one with the most problems.
How hard is it for you when you have to kill off a character?

It can be difficult when the character is colorful, and you've grown to care about them. For instance in Rogue President I had to kill off Cap Robertson, the wacky private detective with a colorful past. I really liked him, but he smoked too much and was stricken with throat cancer. He made a triumphant exit, though, and his death was needed give the novel the bittersweet ending it had.
How much of your personality comes through to your characters?

Too much, I'm afraid. I never realized until I began writing how very twisted I was!
If you could become one of your characters, which one would it be and why?

Now, this is hard to answer because all of my heroines have a lot of me in them. If you want to know me... read about me as the kick-ass late night steam queen in Midnight Mistress, the fleeing model in Dark Masquerade, the suffering First Lady in Rogue President, the frustrated captive in Tender Lightning, the wild child in Brothers of the Night, the Lolita type in Pretty Baby, or the lonely romance writer in Shadow Lover. And this is but a few!
With all the books you have had published, do you still get nervous when you are submitting a manuscript?

I can't say I ever got nervous. Anxious, maybe, or hopeful, but never nervous.
If you were stranded on a deserted island with just one book, what book would it be?

Gone With the Wind
What is your all time favorite movie?

I know I sound like a broken record, but... Gone with the Wind
What is your favorite way to relax after a trying day?

Reading a good book I can get involved in... you know, like the ones I write!
What are you working on right now?

Beautiful Devil - He dances at the Lucifer Club in Hollywood, California. He's the star performer and when a grand dame of the film industry sees him all dressed up in his glittering devil's costume with the flames of hell licking at his torso, she thinks he's the devil. No, not just any old devil... THE ONE THAT RULES HELL!
Thinking she's saving the world from the beast of the underworld, she captures him and hides him in the tower room of her Hollywood Hills mansion. The only problem is... she can't keep her hands off him! Is he really the devil? Is he really too handsome to be mortal? Does he really cast a spell over the entire household? Does he...?
Mmmm... maybe, but I'll never tell. You'll just have to buy the sinfully erotic book written by the hottest writer of erotica is decades!
Is there anything you would like to add before we go?

Yes. Buy my books!
