Valerie Crystal is the author of numerous erotic short stories. She has had stories published in Playgirl and Hustler, you can also find some of her steamy tales online at Sensual Venus, ABC Tales, and she has an erotic serial, One Lucky Bastard, at AnotherChapter.com, that you can get delivered to your email, chapter by chapter each week. She has just finished editing a new anthology, Ride'em Cowboy, a multi-author book dedicated to our love of Cowboy erotica. It is available at her website. Hi Valerie. Welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews! Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us. My pleasure, Kathi, thanks for having me!First, I would like to hear more about Ride'em Cowboy, could you tell us a little about this new anthology? Ride 'em Cowboy is my first anthology, a project I have embarked on with a brand-new publishing company called Aphrodite Press. It has been in the works for nearly a year, and was so much fun! I have always had a thing for cowboys, and editing this book, I got to read hundreds of dirty cowboy stories. I was in heaven! One Lucky Bastard is your first serialized story. Can you give us a peek at what we can expect from this very steamy story? This story is my pet project. It's based on a story that my hubby and I started writing on our honeymoon (we stayed in a cabin in the bush of New Zealand with no electricity - you can imagine what else we were up to that inspired the story). How long have you been writing? I don't recall a time when I was ever not writing. The librarian from my elementary school tells about my very first day of school when I approached him and told him that I was going to be an author. Not that I wanted to, but that I WOULD. It was all sort of downhill from there, so to speak. What to you is the best thing about being a writer, and the worst? The worst is probably those times when my muse is on vacation, and there's nothing in the world that could make me put words on paper, no matter how hard I try.Who has been the greatest inspiration in your life? It's going to sound kind of funny, but Stephen King. I devoured his books insatiably when I was a teenager, and I learned a lot about writing from him - style, form, voice - that stuck with me. His writing and his writing career amaze me.Do you plan your stories ahead of time, scene by scene, or do you sit and let the story just flow? I would really like to be able to say that I sit down and plan scene by scene. Working on One Lucky Bastard I have been working hard to do that more, but honestly I am the writer who just sits down and lets the words flow from me. Then I go back and read what I have written like it's the first time I've seen it. I find that I do my best work with a notepad and a pen, but it's hard for my hand to keep up with my head, so I write on the computer often.Of all the stories you have out there so far, which is your favorite and why? Bradley's Virgin, I think. It's available for free at Sensual Venus. I always liked it because the character is twisted and different. It's one of my "cleaner" stories on the surface, but there's a lot more to it than beats the eye. When did you first decide that erotica was going to be the focal point of your writing? About two years ago, I was struggling with a serious case of writers block. I was working as a newspaper reporter, and just couldn't force myself to write anything that wasn't for work. My unfinished novel sat there taunting me, and there was nothing I could do about it.Could you describe for us your idea of the perfect man? I am the luckiest girl - I married my Prince Charming. The sexy Kiwi boy who shares my life is the perfect man in my eyes, no question! If you had a chance to either go to the past or the future, which would you choose? Any particular year? You know, to be honest I'm quite happy with the present! My life is in a great place right now, and I wouldn't change a thing. Well, not MUCH anyway. *wink*Do you have a favorite movie that you could watch over and over again? *laugh* Pretty Woman. Dirty Dancing. Circle of Friends. I'm such a chick.Could you tell us your biggest pet peeves? Writers Block. Dishonesty. Traffic. Men who hit. People who lack the ability to see other points of view.Any advise for aspiring writers? Write. It's easy to call yourself a writer, or say that you want to be a writer. The hard part is in the actual putting of words on paper. What do you have in the works right now? I always have way too many irons in the fire, and this summer is no exception! I'm working on a few short stories for submission to anthologies that are in the works, an essay on pornography, and a novel about two girls, both seniors in high school, struggling to come to terms with their sexuality.Anything you would like to add before we go? Thanks, it's been fun! Remember to check out Another Chapter in the coming weeks for lots of great stories! (Including One Lucky Bastard, plug, plug . . .)Valerie, thank you once again for taking the time to talk to us! Visit Valerie's website for more on her sizzling stories. Interviewed by: Kathi
