Emma Bruce Interview

First, I want to thank Emma for taking time out of her busy schedule to talk with us about her current projects.

Hi Emma. Welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews. Your most recent release is Baby Mine. Can you tell us about this book and where you got the idea for such an interesting story?

Hello and thanks for having me! Baby Mine came about through several channels. First of all, I've always felt that pregnancy is an amazingly sexy thing. There isn't a time when we as women are more feminine and that in itself is alluring. Also, noting the glow of several young soon-to-be-mom's that I've seen over the last few years got me thinking that the story of this poignant time should be told in a sexy way.
I know Baby Mine was your first steamy novel. How do you like this genre compared to the more mainstream stories you have written?

I like the freedom that it allows. I also feel very strongly that characters that the reader cares about still need to be at the heart of the story despite the erotica element so it's been a challenge too!
How long have you been writing?

I've been writing since high school….seriously since 2000.
Do you believe research is essential for writing a good book?

Yes and no. Truth be told I'm a pretty lazy writer (shhhh….don't tell anyone!). I don't love research and it can really zap the fun for me so I pretty much fictionalize everything unless I truly know an area, time period etc. very well. However, there's nothing worse than something that's not well researched if the story hinges on an event or historic era.
If so, how long does it generally take you to research a story before you begin writing?

Once again, I kind of just get a shadow of a story in my mind and then run w/ it.
I know your daughters keep you hopping. Can you describe a typical day in your life?

I still work three days a week so I take an hour for my writing after the girls head out the door. I'm usually in the shower by 8 at work by 9 and then spend the hours from 4 - 7ish running like mad between ballet, basketball, school plays, softball and my 16 year old's part-time job! They're great kids though and do their best to give me time to write when the day is winding down. The two days a week I'm home alone are unstructured heaven. Just a Lean Cuisine and the computer until it's time to pick someone up in the afternoon!
If you could create the perfect man, what do you feel would be the most important things to add?

Well, I must admit I'm a bit shallow and I like a cute one! But truly, kindness and humor are the most important things. He can be all violins and gifts but if he grumbles when his gal puts on a pound or refuses to help with the kids, he's not worth it in my book!
Do you have a favorite author or genre that you enjoy?

I love Karen Robards. She's kind of Mainstream/Romance/Suspense all wrapped up in one. She's way underrated in my opinion.
Do you have a favorite time period and why?

I like contemporary best but I do enjoy some historical fiction occasionally.
Do you have a much-loved movie that you watch over and over again?

Currently I just love ALMOST FAMOUS, but my favorite movie of all time is AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN. I even paid homage to it in my novel MATINEE MAGIC that will soon be running on Wicked Velvet in serial form.
What is your favorite comfort food and why?

I like all sweets but pie is my favorite. My mom has some pretty major dementia and it's almost impossible to communicate with her these days. Pie makes me think of the great ones she'd bake and then trim the crust and make me little tarts out of what was left.
Do you have a certain type of music that helps get your creative juices flowing?

Anyone who talks to me for more that 10 minutes learns quickly that I'm a HUGE Bruce Springsteen fan. He wafted through the nursery when my kids were babies and now he's in the car with us daily. Anything by him calms me and motivates me.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Probably Italy. My mother's family hails from Naples, but my grandparents passed away quite young and not much information was left for my sister or my cousins and I. I regret that.
Can you tell us about any current projects you are working on?

As I said I have the Wicked Velvet work that will be running soon and I also am toying with a new novel that hopefully will picked up by Liquid Silver Books in the summer. It's a bit different for me and I'm looking forward to it.
Anything else you would like to add before we go?

Just many thanks for spending some time with me!
