Susanna Carr Interview
Hi Susanna! We are very pleased to welcome you to Fallen Angels. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us.
Merry Christmas Baby was just released on September 28th. For fans that have not had a chance to pick it up yet, can you tell us a little about it?
Merry Christmas, Baby is a holiday anthology from Kensington Brava with contributing authors Donna Kauffman, Nancy Warren, Erin McCarthy, MaryJanice Davidson, Lucy Monroe and me. My novella Snow Day is a 'wrong bed' romance. Showing up naked in Tyler's bed had more to do with Karen's rotten luck and bad sense of direction than actual intent. But Tyler's sure she's right where she belongs, and he's got one Christmas snowstorm to prove it to her.
Your book How to Be a Wicked Woman has gotten wonderful reviews. Your website shows the great reviews you have received, as the author, what is your favorite part of this book?
How to be a "Wicked Woman is the launch anthology of Kensington Brava's "Wicked" sub-series. My novella Wicked Ways is about a 'good girl' calling the public library trying to get tips on acting bad. The story idea originated when a speaker at my romance group discussed our local library's answer hotline. I wanted to use that element, and had fun taking on the challenge of incorporating the phone calls into the story.
How does the book evolve for you? Do you write start to finish or skip from scene to scene until the story is complete?
I have to write the book from start to finish. I start with a favorite romance hook and try to work with it in my writing style. The first rough draft is more of a skeleton and then I go back and layer. I go back and layer several times before I'm done.
You have very take charge heroines, where do you get the ideas for your characters?
I wish I could say they're all based on me, but my twin sister – who will undoubtedly read this – would tease me for the rest of my life. After all, I haven't wound up in the wrong bed (no matter how hard I've tried), and I haven't been in half of the trouble Peyton of Wicked Ways found herself in (the other half is a different story). I guess these characters are based on the question that IF a woman found herself in these situations and IF there was a guarantee of a happily-ever-after, how would she approach these challenges?
Speaking of characters, of all your characters, do you have a favorite? If so which one and why?
My stories are often focused on the heroine and her journey, so I would say that my heroines are my favorite characters. Whether they are 'good girls' or women with bad reputations, I like their attitudes.
You have very fun covers. Do you get to have a say in the overall presentation of your work?
No, I don't give any input – and that's probably a good thing! I'm very fortunate that Kristine Mills-Noble creates all my covers. I don't know how she does it, but she's able to convey the fun and upbeat tone of my work.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing seriously for about ten years. There were lots of starts, stops, detours, and roadblocks before finding my home at Kensington Brava.
Outside writing, how else do you like to spend your time?
If I'm not visiting the library or dropping by at a local bookstore, I'm reading a romance.
What has been your most rewarding experience as a writer?
I still remember my excitement when I completed a manuscript for the fist time. It was gratifying to know that I could come up with an idea and carry it through to the end.
You have a family and a career, how do you balance the demands of family with writing?
Well, I haven't found a balance yet – but I'm working on it!
We know you like to write; do you have a favorite author or genre you like to read?
I read a lot of category romance and contemporary single-titles. I very rarely read outside the romance genre, probably because the romance stories can offer so many fresh twists and still give me the happily-ever-after.
What else would you like to accomplish in your career?
My ultimate goal is to satisfy my audience – and then do it again. And again…. I want readers to pick up my books and know they're in for some fun.
You have a new book, ”Wicked” Women 101, coming out in January 2005. It sounds great! Can you give fans a hint what they have to look forward to with this new book.
"Wicked" Women 101 is a collection of novellas about three sorority sisters. Each not-too-sure-of-themselves temptress gains the confidence she needs to get what she wants.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
If there is anyone who hasn't read a Brava book and is interested in giving them a try, please enter the contest found on my website. Every month I offer a trade-size Brava paperback as a contest prize.
Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us. I know I am on my way to pick up Merry Christmas Baby. Go check out Susanna’s site to see what else she has coming up.
Thank you, Amanda!
