Debbie Fritter Interview

Today I am speaking with Debbie Fritter.
Hello Debbie!
Hi Linda!

Welcome, and thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to join us today. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Debbie for taking the time to answer these questions for Fallen Angels. The readers are very eager to hear something about Debbie. Let me begin by asking about your story A Legacy Through Time. I have had the opportunity to read it and found it thoroughly fascinating.
Thank you, Linda. I’m thrilled you like A Legacy Through Time and to be interviewed by Fallen Angels.

How long did it take you to write this wonderful story, A Legacy Through Time?
Several years, I wasn’t as disciplined as I am now and even that’s not like some authors/writers are. I took my time doing my research as I needed it, so that it was fresh in my mind at the point of writing.

What was your motivation behind A Legacy Through Time?
You know, I don’t really know. I had just come off of a year away from writing with one finished project and one incomplete project. I didn’t want to continue on with the incomplete one, so I began anew. Legacy started out as a dream Emma had about a house. The town I lived in at the time has several Victorian style homes and there was one in particular that caught my eye. Once I decided to use my Norwegian ancestors’ names things just started to flow … until Josie decided that she wanted a diary to replace the dream in the story. By the time Legacy ended I wasn’t sure whose story it was, Emma and Royal’s or Josie and Samuel’s…or both.

Is there one person that influenced you to write, perhaps a teacher, author, or relative?
I don’t really think so. I took creative writing in high school and dabbled in poetry for many years. However, a sister of a friend of mine became published and I think it just got the old ball rolling again.

What other things, besides writing, do you enjoy?
Spending time with family and friends, traveling with my husband because we go to so many interesting places and I’ve actually gotten story ideas during our travels. We also have an aged Arabian mare, Essence, and a young Boston Terrier, Toby Tyler. We bought a 100+ year old home recently and are making plans for restoration. And reading of course, when time permits. Some of my favorite authors are Sherry Derr-Wille, Julie Skerven, Alice Blue, Claire Hope, Liz Hunter and Barb Raffin to name a few. Plus I work full-time as a legal secretary.

How do you feel when you’ve finished a book and sent it off? Do you miss your characters?
Much like I did when I sent my son (now 27) off on the first day of school each year. You’re sadden because you know the time’s closing in for the nest to be empty, but you pray for the best and know he’ll do just fine. Then I take about a week or two before starting the next project, however that doesn’t always happen. For instance, when Emerald was finally finished and submitted I started Joust in Time, then pretty soon two other ideas followed.

When you begin to write, is it the characters or the plot that comes to you first?
It can be one of the following: character name(s), title, idea. For me there’s no specific thing that comes first, second or last.

When did you decide to be a writer, or was it always something you wanted to do?
I think it must have been with me always. I really wanted to be a songwriter, but my rhythm was off for that. I kept writing poetry as it struck me.

What is one of the strangest things that has happened to you since you’ve become a writer?
Just before Thanksgiving my husband switched jobs and had to be out of town for a few days. After he got back, I received an email stating that my book Eternal Pleasures, which is a WIP, was found and did I need it. After a few emails back and forth I found out it was found in the trash of the hotel which my husband was staying at. It was an earlier version he was looking over for me and hadn’t gotten to before I gave him an updated one, so he’d tossed it. I may have a new fan out of it, but you never know where the trash in your hotel room will end up anymore.

Can you please tell us about any upcoming releases, appearances and/or chats you may have?
I’m scheduled for an “Author Week” with Whiskey Creek Press Torrid Readers the first week of January. This is where readers email me questions and I answer them. Readers who aren’t on the loop can join at Yahoo Groups (WCPtorridreaders@yahoogroups.com)

Do you write on a schedule or when inspiration strikes?
I “try” to settled down a few nights a week to write, however I’m more of an inspirational writer. If my muse is around I’m usually writing, otherwise I’m trying to find him/her on my own…and that isn’t always successful.

Do you start from scratch when writing or do you have an outline already started before you start your stories?
I usually start with either the characters, title or a small idea. I’m an author who writes by the seat of her pants. I don’t use outlines, just doesn’t work for me. I have a fairly good idea of how I want things to go, but will let the characters take over to tell their story the way they want it told. I don’t know how many times a story has taken a turn in a direction I was totally surprised by.

What advice would you have for those just starting out writing?
Write what you love and know about to begin with. Start out with just a sentence about something and then build from there, things will flow. Or find an article/program and say “What if…” Also, join a local writers group in your area. If you can’t find one, you might want to check the Romance Writers of America website for a group in your area or with your local library.

Do you get along well with your publisher and editors?
I’d like to think so. Whiskey Creek Press has been very good to me in 2005.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you would like to share?
I have 4 works in progress (WIP) right now, none of which are contracted. Eternal Pleasures is an paranormal erotica I’m writing as Debi Wilder; Joust in Time is a time-travel to a Renfaire; Lighthouse Cove is a paranormal; and The Queen is a paranormal aboard The Queen Mary (the inspiration came from staying aboard the ship this past March). Right now, Eternal Pleasures, is dominating all my attention…some very demanding characters in that one. LOL. I’m hoping to have Eternal Pleasures contracted soon.
