Hello Shiloh -- thanks for taking time from your busy writing schedule to come share a little bit about yourself with the Fallen Angel Staff and Readers. You have so many fans of your
HUNTER series, where did that idea come from? (P.S. Thank you for doing both men and women)
Not sure, really. I woke up one morning and the idea was kind of there. I'd been wanting to do a vampire/werewolf story but didn't really have anything started beyond a couple of stories I'd started writing down on paper but nothing came of the ideas. I like strong women, independent women, but I also don't want them so darned stubborn they can't ask for help. We all
need help every now and then, if we don't ask for it when it's needed, bad things happen. So I wanted a female character that was strong, but not overly stubborn, and I wanted a hero that was strong, but not pigheaded. Tori and Declan hit the match and the rest evolved from there. I don't know if I was actually planning on a series.
How many more do you have planned in this series?
I'm working on Hunters 6 now. After that, there will be at least two more, maybe a few more, but I'm going to start winding it down. I'd say no more than ten or eleven.
I would ask about your current release, but you have several, so, can you tell us about all your current releases?
I've got Hunters: Ben and Shadoe with www.ellorascave.com, that's a story about a witch who doesn't know she's a witch and a guy that's been trying to find her for years.
At www.triskelionpublishing.com I've got No Longer Mine out. That's the first romance I ever wrote, finished it when I was 19, rewrote it when I was like 22 or so, and it was a POD title for a while, but not selling so well. When the contract I ended, I signed it with Triskelion.
How about future projects? Anything you can talk about? Maybe, if we plead, give us a sneak peek?
I've got a story coming up in the Legendary Tales it's called Freak of Nature and it will be out in June, I think.
Excerpt:
He was dead meat.
Zoë came up out of her work-induced fugue with only that thought on her brain as a fist pounded on her door again.
It was Micah.
She knew it in her gut-Zoë wanted to scream with rage, while at the same time, she wanted to throw herself into his arms.
It had been more than five years, not since. She cut the thought off. She wasn't going there. Not now.
She didn't want him around. Hell, hadn't she made that clear when she kicked him off her property that last day?
Tearing down the steps, her eyes wild, she jerked the door open. "GO AWAY!"
But he only stood there, as all the force of her gift battered at him. She saw a slight tightening around his eyes from the pain he was no doubt in as she mentally shoved at him.
Guilt came and went.
All the jackasses who had come to her door lately, and she had kept to physical violence with them, even though they made it obvious they knew what she was.
But with Micah, she didn't hold back. She shoved with all the power of her mind. But he didn't move.
Swallowing, she focused and drew the raw power back inside her, watching he relaxed slightly. Quieter now, she said, "Go away, Micah."
Shaking his head, he said quietly, "I can't."
I also have a novella coming out from Berkley this year. It has stories from Lora Leigh, Meljean Brook and Emma Holly in it. I'm very psyched about that. The story is called Blood Kiss and it's vampire, although I'm kind of nervous about telling too much about anything until it's closer.
How do readers find out more about you and your books?
My website is the best place www.shilohwalker.com
Can you drop us a contact e-mail so that fans new and old can let you know how they enjoy your work?
Yes, it's shi@shilohwalker.com
Do you have a favorite comment or question from a reader?
I've had so many. One that stands out in my mind was from a reader that lives in Jamaica. She was really psyched about the character Leandra that debuted in Hunters IV. I talked to her several times.
Your work is predominately paranormal, this is a huge market, so whatinfluenced your decision to write romance novels?
I like romance.
How much of your personality and life experiences do you put into your writing?
I don't know. I think quite a few of my heroines have my attitude, kind of bratty in a way. I'm a nurse, and I've written a couple of books that have nurses in them.
And sometimes funny things that I see or that happen to me work their way into a book.
Generally, how long does it take you to write a book?
Depends on the story. I wrote Once Upon A Midnight Blue in six hours. Whipped Cream and Handcuffs in about four hours. Hunters Tori and Declan took about a month. It just varies.
What is your writing routine?
Ummm. don't have much of one. I write when I feel it's time to start working. Usually four or five hours a day. I play with my website, play online. I keep telling myself to get more organized. Never happens.
In your writing we get to see a fantastic sense of humor, what do you do to relax and recharge your batteries?
I love to watch movies with my husband. Go out to eat with him. Take our kids to places like the zoo, to movies. I love photography, although I just play at it more than anything.
I read, not as much as I used to though. After I'm done working, I don't even want to look at books much, but when I do read, it's usually sci fi or fantasy.
In keeping with the previous question, do you feel humor is important in women's fiction and why?
LOL. Humor is important to everything. If you can't laugh at yourself, if you can't find humor in life, then something is seriously lacking.
Hot and sexy are not words you shy away from, do you find love scenes difficult to write?
Nope. Nonfiction would be hard to write. Westerns would be hard to write or Biographies. Basically, anything that doesn't hold my interest enough to read is going to translate to being hard to write. So I don't bother.
What kind of research do you do? How much do you think is necessary?
Depends on the book. When I have a nursing character, there's no need to research, unless I'm just brushing up on something, but most people don't want to read nurse tech anyway. I like going on trips and scouting out places where I can base a book, so that might be considered research. Basically though, I like to write what I know.
And since so much of my stuff is paranormal, the research rules don't apply as much.
You have some great material on your website
www.shilowalker.com can you tell us something about yourself, a bit of a bio, something other people do not know?
Eh. do I have to? LOL. Well known fact - I like to talk. Just not about myself.
I'm married to my high school sweetheart, whom I adore and we have two beautiful, if some what spoiled, kids. I worked as a nurse up until April 2004 but I've been writing full time since.
Hmmm...something people don't know? I love the Little House on the Prairie books. Maybe it's because I see so much of what happens in the world now, but there was something so innocent and true in those books.
What are some of your favorite things to do?
Go on trips with my family. Take my kids shopping and to the zoo. Read, sometimes. Write, naturally. Photography. Having a NICE quiet evening, just me and the husband.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
I love Lora Leigh, Jaci Burton, Cheyenne McCray and Mary Wine from EC. And Sherri King. Man, her Shikar warriors..
I love JD Robb and Janet Evanovich. Some of Laurell K Hamilton's earlier stuff.
But my absolute favorite author is SL Viehl. She writes romance under a couple of pen names, and Sci fi. Her Stardoc series is out of this world.
Who, if anyone, has influenced your writing?
I don't know. I love some of Nora Roberts' books, how she incorporates the man's emotions and POV into a story. Not as many writers do that, and I love writing the story through the guy's eyes. So maybe her.
Where would you like to see yourself in five years?
Still writing, hopefully with most of my bills paid off. If I'm REALLY lucky, I want my husband and I to be working on the plans for a house we want to build.
How many books have you written, how many have been published? Where?
Twenty four, I think. 21 with EC, two with Triskelion, and one with Wings. There's more that are under contract, but not out yet, and others that I finished but I'm not happy with.
Among your own novels, have you a favorite book? Favorite hero or heroine?
Touch of Gypsy Fire. I love that book. And Tyriel from that book is my fave. And Irian. I like Blue from Once Upon a Midnight Blue, and my Dragon from The Dragon's Warrior.
What are the elements of a great romance for you?
Something different. I've read a thousand romances, and nothing bothers me more than when I read a book by an author that feels like the same one she put out a year ago.
So give me something different and make me laugh, or make me cry. I have to have emotion in the romances, or I lose interest.
What is the most rewarding thing about being a writer?
Knowing that I don't have to rely on a job that breaks my heart in order to care for my family. Being able to tell stories and actually get paid for them.
If you weren't writing, what would you be doing?
Nursing still.
Any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?
Uh, keep at it?
What question would you love to answer that I didn't ask?
I think you hit them all. ;)
Thank you Shiloh
