Fallen Angel Reviews would like to welcome author Linn Random. Linn, thank you for taking the time to be here today.
Joletta, the pleasure is all mine!
You state in your biography that you've wanted to be a writer, mother and wife. How does it feel to achieve your goals?
Being a wife, a mother and a writer is a continuous journey and as in every journey it's the little pleasures and the love shared that make life worth while. I am happy with my life now measured not in successes but in time well spent.
Do you find it difficult to balance your home life while writing?
Like any other working Mom, I am available for my son before and after school after all being a Mom is my most important job. As a full time journalist, I love working at home but while it's a blessing it can also be a distraction. Do I enter Nirvana or do the laundry; both are constantly vying for my attention.
You have an impressive booklist, can you tell us a little about your new releases?
My next books are Your Cheatin Hearts, release date April 2005 is a romantic comedy. My heroine is coaxed into a harebrain undercover assignment; of all things an erotic romance novelist who also writes cookbooks and is a licensed pilot. Only my heroine can't boil water and is afraid of flying. However, her law enforcement skills do come in handy when she had to deal with kidnappers and a hero who hates liars.
Pirates In Paradise to be released this June, a twin is tricked into exchanging places with her sister who is in the Witness Protection Program but when a drug lord locates her and she is forced to run for her life with a handsome stranger. This book is an extreme fast paced action that will take readers from South Beach to the Everglades to the Florida Keys and the Caribbean before its dramatic climax.
Other books out are: Haunted Hearts, Black Water and Cold River Murders which is the second in the McCall Mystery Series.
Your mystery/suspense
Lights, Camera. Murder! received rave reviews. Where did the idea for this novel come from?
I am a reality TV Show junkie and thought how fun it would be to marry a reality TV Show mystery that allows the TV Audience to follow along at home only a real life murder isn't part of the script.
What sort of research goes into your novels?
I am a research junkie and I don't confine my research to books. To fully appreciate the taste of alligator, as the hero challenges my heroine in, Lights, Camera. Murder! I actually ate fried alligator appetizers.(Yuck!) No, it doesn't taste anything like chicken. For my book Pirates In Paradise, I took a airboat ride with a gentleman who could have been sent from Central Casting on his 7 foot airboat powered by a airplane engine. My vision of the ride was a short, smooth trip; I returned white knuckled, windblown and shaking. I thanked him for showing me "what that baby could do."
Who are your greatest influences?
When I was seven years old my riding instructor who noticed I was having trouble taking my horse over a jump, told me "Let your heart go first, the horse will follow." Beautiful, rich advice which still inspires me.
Do any of your friends or family make appearances in your novels?
Its been my experience real friends and family never do what you want them to do in life or on paper but I will admit to being inspired by such television stars such as handsome Julian McMahon as my hero in Lights, Camera. Murder! and in Pirates In Paradise. Lucky Vannous, the diet coke guy, is Jack Colter in Your Cheatin Hearts. And I'm using the ever charming Hugh Grant for Haunted Hearts. So you see, I'm dreaming right along with my readers.
I have to say...you have very good taste Linn. *grin*
What did you do to celebrate the sale of your first novel?
What else? I went to Walt Disney World but then I live only a few miles from it. I couldn't imagine a better place to celebrate the magic of my first book sale.
How long did it take you to become published?
I began writing when I was just six years old but it took me a few more decades to complete my book Lights, Camera. Murder! My publisher Triskelion accepted both Your Cheatin Hearts and Lights, Camera. Murder! in just two weeks. They accepted Pirates In Paradise in 24 hours.
What would we find on your bookshelf?
Oh dear, I'm quite sure I'm on some FBI list with all my books on crime scene investigations, poisons, serial murders and profilers not to mention my small library of romantic suspense, mysteries and thrillers. If anything happens to my husband; one look at my research library and the cops will sent me straight to the clinker.
LOL! Where do you see yourself in five years?
This is what is amazing, because in five years, I see myself writing, working on romantic suspense and mysteries. I am living my dream. I couldn't imagine doing anything else.
What is the most unusual question or comment that you've heard from a fan?
The most interesting question was from a fan who asked if my husband the inspiration for my love scene? To which I always respond, Yes!
Can you give us a sneak peak into your upcoming works?
Cold River Murders is the next in the McCall Mysteries, featuring Mallory, the younger sister of Sage McCall and has her own serial killer to deal with.
Black Water will take the readers into the dark side of Voodoo through a haunting trip into the Louisiana Bayous where the evil of a paranormal entity stretches across time. My heroine will have her hands full with a killer cult and a way too sexy Homicide Detective from the Big Easy.
What do you always carry with you?
I am rarely without my six month old Golden Retriever, Hunter, who is being trained in Search and Rescue. You'll always find a heart shaped locket on my neck. In the locket are pictures of my two best friends who I lost in 2004; my best friend Diane Spitznagle and my beloved Australian Shepherd Wesley.
Do you have any words of advice for aspiring novelists?
God never gives us a desire without also giving us the tools and the wherewith all to develop it. Have faith in yourself no matter what your dream.
Is there anything that you would like to add?
When I read books, I love knowing the insider information, so with that in mind, I developed a series of Character Interviews on my web site. Everyone is invited to read the questions My characters ask me. It's a fun look into my books, where did the ideas come, what twists and turns to expect and how the plots and character developed.
My favorite interview is with Roxy, the ghost of a 1920s Flapper girl. Roxy steals the show in Haunted Hearts.
