Mae Ann Powers Interview
Hi Mae-Ann! Welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us.
If you were to describe your new release, Sweet Seductress, to someone who has not had the pleasure of reading one of your books, how would you?
In Sweet Seductress, the bewitching healer Kaelyn is bequeathed sex magics. To keep and harness these powers, she ravishes the warrior Yarron through magical seduction. This causes him to want revenge when she misplaces his trust in her. The lovers soon learn that revenge and power are not the most import driving forces in their world. The love they discover for each other is the one true magic their hearts and bodies will ever need.
What inspired you to write futuristic romance?
I've always liked space operas and being intrigued by what's to come. I have read historicals and horror and other genres. Cross genres are my favorite, because I like putting a little something different in all my stories. I was born on Moon Day, July 20th. Mankind landed on the moon then. I always wanted to go there. Since I didn't become an astronaut I became a writer of fantasy, romance and speculative fiction.
What do you derive the most inspiration from for your writing?
All sorts of things. Some one can give me a word or a phrase and out pops a story idea or a character name or a scene, or a whole series even. Oh yes and reading. I just read Starkissed by Lanette Curington, and it is excessively wonderful. Reading books like hers keeps the noggin rollin'.
How do you like to spend your time when you are not writing?
I enjoy spending time with my kids, we all watch Star Gate together; I take walks, plot new stories, get in the chats, research a lot, go to movies, cause trouble.
How do you keep your ideas fresh and imaginative?
Keep reading and checking what's being published. Trying not to over saturate and if it's done too much then give it a new twist or add something different.
When you sit down to write a book, do you have the entire idea of a book in your head or just a thought that evolves into something as wonderful as your books?
Both sometimes. Sometimes I will not outline, other times I do just to have a direction or tighten the plot. It varies. I jot things down on a notebook at times. Anything is liable to pop in my head and become a story. Ask any other writer who knows me.
Do you have a favorite character from one of your books that you might be interested in revisiting for a follow-up book?
I think Jacques Corday and Brynn Anders of Midnight Lover. I have a series I had originally planned called Sins in Solar City. Midnight Lover is a novella derived from that series. I'll be planning the books out later this year. It will be another story about Jacques and Brooke, plus their friends and enemies. It's a futuristic, paranormal sensual series of books with lots of twists and sinfully teasing surprises.
In Sweet Seductress, Kaelyn appears to need Yarron as much as Yarron needs Kaelyn; was this the original plot for this book or did the plot evolve into this?
Actually the original idea was from a contest on the Phaze.com website. Phaze had a challenge that dealt with UFOs, Chocolate Chips, and handcuffs. Blew me away when I won first place. Phaze has been good about helping to launch my career, there are some talented writers there and a terrific editor/artist by the name of Stacey King.
Per your website, I see you are currently working on a new book that is at present titled, Passionate Souls, with a tentative release of August 2006. Can you give a hint about this book? :-)
Champagne Books just recently contracted me for the futuristic sensual romance. I'll be lengthening the story to enhance it. Here's what it is basically about. I'm excited about working on this and others with Champagne.
Passionate Souls is a sensual, futuristic romance, category length novel. It is about the unusually intertwined lives of Jontair, High Duke of Dantos, and Lanea Quinn, head security officer of the Jemstarr world. These two unique individuals find a deep and satisfying love, which is initiated through Jontair's race's mating practice known as the Epiphinahtum. However, the two must learn to deal with conglomerate spies, pirates, a traitorous prime minister, and their own personal troubles in order to reach that satisfying conclusion they both seek.
Your website shows that this new release will be released through Champagne, can we look forward to all of your new releases coming through Champagne?
Not all of my books will be coming through www.champagne.com. Midnight Showcase is contracting me for others. They just accepted my novella Ménage, and have acquired a set of anthology ideas I wrote a proposal on about a paranormal town called Spellfire, Texas. I've some talented authors working with me on this project and others that I'm proposing to www.midnightshowcase.com. My schedule is filling quickly. I've also been contracted by Silks Vault Publishing to do a series, and they have recently released my short story The Orb. I have another short story coming out at www.silksvault.com very soon. I'm hoping www.phaze.com will take the other Sins books once I propose it to them. Phaze also is releasing a summer short of mine, around mid July, called The Mating Tree. I recently sent out an erotic vampire story called Vampirus to be considered for Chippewa Publishing's Vamprotica 2005.
Can you tell us a little about your upcoming release, Midnight Treasures?
Well it's not just mine; it's an anthology with paranormal themes that several wonderful writers (Devi Sparks, Leigh Ellwood, and Anne Regentin) and I put together. Their stories are devilishly good, but here's a peak of what mine is about.
Midnight Lover is a futuristic romance soap opera set in a mythical town called Solar City, in the near future (2085). The characters, and the town itself, have many secrets and many sins to hide. But Solar City and its eclectic inhabitants thrive with the passionate lives they lead. Several of the series characters are introduced in the first book. However, Midnight Lover is about two of central characters, Brynn Anders and Jacques Corday, who are reunited after many years apart.
When Jacques comes storming back into her life, after distrusting her ten years ago, Brynn's mind cries for revenge, but her heart wants the happiness she once felt in his arms. Jacques knew he wronged her and vows he'll move the stars, and anything that gets in his way, to win her love back. However, their reunion is anything but tame, because Jacques' devious brother Maurice will stop at nothing to try and wreak havoc in the lovers' lives' again.
Do you have any other upcoming works that you would like to tell us about?
Well I've mentioned some above, but I have another digest planned for the Spellfire town. Plus I have 6 ideas I'm writing up proposals on now, with a talented group of writers who have wonderful imaginations like myself. These stories are going to knock your socks off and burn holes in them. Some of the anthology/digest titles are Vamptations (different kings of vampire stories), Merlicious (sea lovers, merfolk), Dragon's Desires, Alien Seduction, and a series I'm writing with Jennifer Metz called H.A.R.E.M. that has been contracted by Silk's Vault publishing. So yes there is lots going on and upcoming. Plus two other novels in the works, one called Holiday Games (a paranormal adventure romance), and A Deadly High (a futuristic, paranormal murder mystery romance). All these are slated to be finished within a 12-16 month period. Some of them are already under consideration.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
FAR rocks! All the people there are wonderful and their chat room are a great place to hang out, when I have time. LOL. I also host author and publisher chat-list/posting parties at my Yahoo Group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MaejicalPowers, or go to my website at www.jirr.bravehost.com . It's still going through changes, but pertinent info is up. And thanks to all who helped to make my dreams come true, and thanks to all the wonderful writers doing the projects with me: Lani, Shay, Megan, Tracy, Anne, Marissa, Jennifer, Leanne Sally, and Leigh.
Thank you so much for stopping by Mae-Ann. Let me just add, readers if you have not had a chance to read some of Mae-Ann's work, stop by her website to see what you are truly missing.
