Michele Chambers Interview

Welcome to FAR, Michele. Michele Chambers is the author of the TIMEWALKERS, CHIMERA, and GHOST WARRIORS series.

The TIMEWALKERS books delve into parallel realms and dimensions where specially gifted women travel in time to keep the balance. Where did this intriguing idea come from?

Good question. Best answer I can give is that it came from the cosmic soup. (g) My philosophy is, never ever question the muse. It may desert you at any moment. A more honest answer is that I mixed too much Star Wars with Cinderella when I was young and impressionable. I think it left a mark…(g)

Aisling Antwyr’s mission is of the utmost importance but will she succeed or be betrayed by her mate?

Oh, I just can’t tell! ;) I will say that my TIMEWALKERS are kick-ass, take-charge women who take their responsibility to the universe very seriously. Heaven help the poor man who tries to stop them.

Will you tantalize us with a glimpse of TIMEWALKER TWO: MAIRI? When will it be released?

Mairi was released by Loose Id March 1, 2005. She’s a descendant of Atlantis who breathes water and is sent to rescue a prince from a shipwreck at the bottom of an ocean. Here’s a very brief excerpt. Not only did she find her mate, she found some unusual friends! Yasra is a sentient being, ruler of her oceans, and Mairi’s ally. Raiden’s been captured by the enemy, or so she thinks… Mairi is in for a big surprise.

TIMEWALKERS TWO: MAIRI
… Mairi didn’t know how long it took, but every moment felt like an eternity. On her shoulder, the Shen pulsed with renewed vigor at the proximity of her mate. Each beat drove her closer to the edge of reason, had her twisting her fists in the ropes, more to bind herself to Yasra than anything else. Everything in her demanded she charge forward to find him, save him.

Calling on years of training, she fought down the urge and focused on breathing, on the cool water flowing into her lungs. The frantic rhythm of her heartbeat drove her Shen to match its pace. Mairi tried, in vain, to slow down, but couldn’t concentrate enough to gain control of her body. She’d used the healing stones to repair the damage to her leg. She was healthy and whole, and driven by a primitive urge to save her mate. Raiden.
Like a whisper, Raiden’s Shen answered her call, summoned her to his side. Strange as it was, his heartbeat moved through her like music, slowed the erratic pounding in her chest. His body reached through space to calm her mind, to soothe her nerves with confidence and strength. He was whole. It was enough.

Closing her eyes, Mairi centered her existence on the murmur of Raiden’s heartbeat. The steady pulsation reassured her as nothing else could, and she waited in tranquil silence.

We go.

Mairi ducked behind the screen and held on as Yasra and her mate rocketed to the surface. Several of the water propulsion systems were still operating to keep the monster afloat, and they were careful to avoid them.

Air caressed her face with a soft breeze and Mairi’s lungs greedily took their fill. She could breathe water, but the act strained her system. Especially here. The water was denser, heavier, and her poor diaphragm had to work overtime to pull the thick liquid into her body.

A network of small domes bobbed above the surface, like they’d been left and forgotten by a giant fisherman. She was contemplating how to open them when all the seals popped open with a loud hiss. In the center, the top of the largest white dome flew over with a loud bang. First one hand, then another cleared the top. Raiden appeared, pulled himself out of the hatch and smiled right at her.

“I knew you were here.”

Mairi let out the breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. Knowing he was alive wasn’t nearly as good as seeing him in the flesh. Yasra moved closer so she could jump onto the structure and into Raiden’s arms. She burrowed her face into his neck, eager to taste him, to smell his skin, to listen to his heart beating in his muscular chest. “How did you know?”

“This.” Like a man starving for a taste of her, he wrapped his arms around her and crushed her to him, fusing their lips together in a kiss that stole every thought from her head. Hard and aggressive, his erection pressed into her stomach.

Yasra trilled a warning and Mairi pulled herself back from the precipice of her desire.
Others were emerging, confused and disoriented. Still holding her pressed to his side,
Raiden surveyed the spectacle with a knowing eye, looking for someone ...

“You did this, didn’t you?”

“Yes.” He didn’t look at her, just kept searching the astonished faces that emerged.

“You let them take you, so you’d end up here.”

“Yes.”

“Why? What is this place? Who are you looking for?”

PROJECT CHIMERA appears to be a suspenseful view of science gone awry when a corrupt scientist is in control. Where did Madelaine’s twisted view of life come from? How was she able to deceive Jacob? Was she always planning to take over or did the elixir change her?

CHIMERA is an evolving project, and my first writing love. Madelaine was attracted to power, and the elixir sped her along that path. I believe every decision we make has a measurable affect on the world around us. All of our little choices accumulate to create our reality, be that leaning toward evil or good. Jacob was deceived because he doubted that journey to reality, and because he didn’t want to see. Denial is a choice we all make once in a while, a choice, which in his case, had dire consequences for the world. THE GUARDIAN takes place years later, after Madelaine has established her empire. Mike is an average man forced to see another world. It’s never easy to face truth, it’s even harder to face the absolute truth about yourself. That’s what the series is about. Choices. The ones we make, and the ones we don’t.

Do you have a release date for PROJECT CHIMERA: THE GUARDIAN?

I haven’t sold this series yet. I’m waiting right now to hear. Keep your fingers crossed! Toes crossed. Legs crossed. Etc… etc…etc… (g)

Will you share a few tidbits from the future six PROJECT CHIMERA books?
THE CHIMERA series is based on the Divine Rule of 12 and Balance between male and female energy. I have six books planned, but don’t want to get into too much detail. (g) I can say that there will be 6 “pair” of warriors who have to fight extraordinary battles and form a cohesive unit. They all have different paranormal/psi talents and skills.

GHOST WARRIORS combines Inrives, evil beings from another dimension, and Druidic Elves battling for the fate of humanity within the bodies of human beings. How did you come up with the Inrives?

The creatures introduced themselves to me first, then I had to hunt for something to name them. The Inrives have a sordid reputation, mythologically speaking, and seemed the perfect fit for the evil beings I’d imagined. This is also a WIP that I am hoping to sell soon. (g)

Staci Newman in THE AWAKENING is the first human to feel the call of the Ghost Warrior magic. How did Staci become the first of those gifted with the Ghost Warrior’s power?

Staci is loosely based on a good friend of mine from my youth whom I loved, admired, and deeply respected. She’s tough, smart, and incredibly vulnerable. The Inrives sense that and her natural psychic ability. They attack her first in hopes of claiming her for their own. The Ghost Warrior offers her a chance for survival, at a horrible price. There’s love, murder, betrayal. The whole spectrum of human emotion and challenges. Again, choices are everything.

Will you tease us with a glimpse into future GHOST WARRIOR books?
All I can say is they’ll be dark, intensely emotional, and hopefully make readers look at the world with new eyes and a new awareness of themselves. That’s my ultimate goal.

Do you ever feel like your characters are trying to take over your mind?

You mean to tell me this mind was supposed to be MINE? Mine???? Oh, well then, I’ve got some serious ass-kicking to do! Although, I’m afraid the others are so deeply entrenched it’ll be impossible to get them out. Lololol.

Did your books come from your dreams, sudden inspirations, what ifs or all?

It’s a combination. My dreams are bizarre, to say the least. I think I watch too much of the Sci-Fi channel. I also have a fantastic sister with an imagination at least as twisted as mine, but no inclination to write. If we toss around an idea for a couple of hours I’ve usually got more material than I could ever use. Thank goodness for baby sisters. (g)

Are there any other genres you would like to explore?

I don’t know. I seem to be obsessed with love and dark quests. I have thought about high fantasy or children’s books. Those would also be fun to explore someday.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your books?

I just hope my readers have as much fun reading my stories as I have writing them.

Is there any music that inspires your writing?

Music is, in my opinion, just as powerful as the written word. Whatever mood I need for the scene I’m writing, I find something that fits. Personally, when I’m stressed, I listen to classical. When I’m excited about something I crank up the rock and roll. Tired? Jazz. The list goes on and on. If I couldn’t write, I’d want to be a singer. (Thank your lucky eardrums that I do write. Lol)

Do you have a specific routine before you write? Do you write in one area only or everywhere?

I can’t write until the kids go to bed. So, it’s from about 8pm to midnight or 1am. If there are any distractions I can’t concentrate, so I take my laptop to the a quiet room and hide. (g)

Who/What inspired you to write?

I fell in love with books at a very young age. I thank my mom for reading to us constantly when we were little and for always indulging me when I wanted to order everything listed on the scholastic flyers the school sent home. Great stories. Adventures. That’s what inspired me.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Oh, my favorite all-time #1 is Christine Feehan. I also truly enjoy reading Sherilyn Kenyon, Laurel K Hamilton, Susan Grant, Anne McCaphrey, Dan Brown, Robin McKinley, Susan Carroll, R.A. Salvatore, David Eddings, Julie Garwood, George Lucas.

Is there a way other than your website for fans to keep updated?

Absolutely! Join my newsletter! Send an e-mail to: MicheleChambersbookgroup-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

What final advice would you offer to writers who are seeking publication?

Learn as much as you can. Listen to every author who’ll talk – you can get a gem from almost everyone. And just keep writing, and writing, and writing…

Finally, any last thoughts.

Just have to say, fantastic interview! Thank you so much.
