Lindy Hudis Interview
Welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews, Lindy. It’s great to have you here.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Tell us a little about yourself.
Well, I am a transplanted New Yorker turned California girl, actress turned writer. I came out to Los Angeles in 1992 to seek my fortune in Hollywood. After about a decade of getting my heart broken, I gave up trying to make it in the movie biz, got married, had a baby, and decided to try my hand at writing. I guess you could say that I am a free-spirit.
WEEKENDS has recently been released. Can you tell us a little about this story?
WEEKENDS is a romance-suspense novel set at an exclusive California beach resort where a family reunion is taking place. Our hero, Joe Peterson, is the gorgeous filmmaker from Beverly Hills there for a little R & R with his family. What happens is that extended family and friends meet, fall in love and lust, and learn deep family secrets. Also, one of the family members is a fugitive on the run from the police, who wrecks havoc on the weekend. Fortunately, a long lost cousin is a handsome FBI agent. As for what happens, well, you just got to buy the book, LOL! It has loads of romance, suspense, action, and sex!
On your website you have a link for "needing a stuntman". What’s that all about?
My husband is a stuntman for the movie industry. He is always doubling actors in movies, television, and commercials. He has been doing stunts for twenty years. He specializes in car and truck stunts, but he also likes to set himself on fire and jump off buildings. He just shot a Verizon Wireless commercial, and he had to drive through this huge puddle and splash a guy. That is what he does for a living, he crashes for cash. He loves it.
How is being a screenwriter/actress different from being a published author? How is it the same?
You have more creative freedom with a novel, I think. With screenwriting there are so many other aspects involved. You have to understand that a screenplay is going to be something else, it is not the finished product. You have to keep in mind the budget, the location, get the exposition by page three, the conflict by page fifteen, each page is one minute of shooting footage and each minute of film is about ten thousand dollars. With fiction writing you have much more creative freedom, it is just you, your computer, and your characters. You don’t have a producer telling you that it is going to cost too much.
Why did you decide to write romance novels?
I have been writing all of my like. I used to sit around with my friends and write little short stories, and we would act out all of the parts. I just never thought I would take me anywhere. I wrote the first 22 pages of WEEKENDS ten years ago and threw them in a drawer and forgot about them. I ran across them two years ago when I was cleaning out my place. After I had given birth to my daughter, I put the pages on the computer and just wrote when she was sleeping. The next thing I knew, I had 300 pages. The rest, as they say, is history.
Do you have any plans to continue acting and writing screenplays?
I’m no longer acting, but I am working on turning my screenplay CRASHERS into a novel. This is a crime fiction/mainstream story. I wrote the screenplay back in 1997 and tried to raise the 2 million dollars to get it made. Needless to say, I didn’t have much luck. I am going to turn that into a novel after I am finished editing CITY OF TOYS. It is hard for me to write one thing while I am editing another. Then I will hit CRASHERS full throttle. That is my summer project, to finish that up. Then I am going to write another Hollywood story, then a sequel to WEEKENDS, then I am going to take a nap.
Do you feel that your "Hollywood" experiences prepared you for being an author?
Hollywood is a very dramatic, intense place. There are so many stories and experiences to share. I think the whole city is my inspiration. I couldn’t live anywhere else. It has definitely made me who I am today.
CITY OF TOYS is due out in August 2005. What’s that book about?
CITY OF TOYS is a mainstream novel. There is nothing warm and fuzzy about CITY OF TOYS. It is based on the time I spent in Hollywood when I was a struggling actress. It was a difficult and scary time, and I had plenty of upsetting things happen to me and to other women I knew. I had to write a story about it, and it is going to be released in August of 2005. It is about what goes on behind closed doors in Hollywood. It chronicles the lives and dreams of four different women who are all aspiring to make it in the movie biz.
What would we find on your bookshelf?
Everything! I have such a diverse taste in books and music. I have fiction, political non-fiction, self-help, spiritual guides, parenting guides, publishing business books, movie business books, and my trusty Websters. I am literally running out of space to put everything.
If you could do anything or be anyone for 24 hours, what would you do?
I’d want to win American Idol! Seriously, though. I love that show! It is the ultimate "dreams come true" show. I am hopelessly addicted. My cel phone even rings with "A Moment Like This". If I was ten years younger and could sing, I’d be there ready to take on Simon any day!
Can you give us a sneak peak into your upcoming works?
I am going to work on my erotic novella series, DEVON AND DESIREE. That should be coming out soon. It is about a lesbian couple that is heavily into bondage and discipline. They are going to travel the world to fulfill their fantasies. It should be very kinky!
If you were stranded on a desert island, what is one thing you would take with you?
My family.
Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?
Just keep the faith, dreams do come true!
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us, Lindy.
