Emma Sinclair Interview

Hi Emma! Welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us. I know that I appreciate this opportunity to visit with you.

Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi!
I’m Emma. I’ve been writing seriously for about two years now and currently have 5 books scheduled for release. I’m married to a physicist, no kids yet, and I currently live in Maryland. I like long walks on the beach…oh wait, you probably don’t need to know that.

Looking back on life is there a certain event or time that inspired you to become an author?
I don’t really remember ever wanting to be anything else, but at the same time it was a dream that I never really thought would actually come true. A few years ago I read a book called I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was. It sounds kind of stupid but that was when I realized that I could be a writer, but I actually had to write.

How long have you been writing?
Forever. But seriously for about two years now.

When you found out about your first sale, what was your reaction?
I was thrilled!! I was home alone and called my husband and emailed my critique partner. I was on my way to my local writers meeting when I got “the email” so I rushed out to share with them, too.
That was quickly followed by “what now?” My first sale was a bit intimidating. Sure, an editor liked the first book, but what about the other stuff I write?

Do you write on a schedule or as inspiration hits?
Both. I am lucky enough to be a stay at home writer (have I mentioned my super supportive husband) so I do make myself write during the day. But I think it’s impossible to ignore inspiration!

Little Red and Baby It's Cold Outside have both been sold to Venus Press. How does this make you feel? Can you tell us a little about each of these stores?
Actually, Little Red and Baby It’s Cold Outside are both Whiskey Creek Press Torrid releases. One Hot Hour is the story that has sold to Venus Press.

It was great selling to Venus Press. I’m a big fan of lots of VP Authors so it’ll be great to have my book along side theirs. Also it’s great to have that second publisher/editor positive opinion!

Little Red is a Torrid Twisted Tale based on Little Red Riding Hood. Who knew that when it came to pleasure the Big Bad Wolf could be oh-so good.

Baby It’s Cold Outside will be part of Torrid’s Winter Wishes anthology which looks like it is going to be an amazing book with 10 great, different and sexy stories. My story is about a woman to whom sex was never anything special until her sexy neighbor changes her mind one winter night.

My Venus Press story, One Hot Hour is about a lonely stay at home mom and the sexy contractor who does her a favor one afternoon.

What was the inspiration for A Walk On The Wild Side?
I lived across from a gym in Seattle that offered a Cardio Strip class. While I never made it to the class, A Walk on the Wild Side started with that idea and then taking it a bit further to amateur night at a strip club.
I don’t plot my stories ahead of time, but that’s where it started and just grew from there.

Are your characters based on real life people or are they completely made up?
There completely made up, though I think (hope) readers see something of people they know in each of the characters.

What type of research goes into your novels?
I’m not really a big fan of research which is one of the reasons you’ll never see me writing historicals! I watch a lot of Discovery Channel and other educational shows and am kind of a nerd so generally the research I do for my books is research that interests me anyway, whether or not I was writing the book.

Shannon in A Walk on The Wild Side, is a physicist so I had to do a little bit of research (though it involved mostly talking to my husband).

I’m a big believer in that if you can’t find it on Wikipedia, it’s not worth knowing.

What do you use to focus on your writing when life tries to butt in?
I’m usually pretty good at compartmentalizing my life – really I can just rationalize doing (or not doing) anything so I don’t usually have problems. But I get cranky if I have to go too long without writing. Now that I’m officially a stay at home writer I have many fewer bad days though.

Is there a genre you would like to try your hand at writing?
When I was younger I always thought I’d write mysteries. I’m the kind of person that has to read the last chapter first though so I don’t know if I’d be able to write something too suspenseful.

Also a part of me would like to try a sweeter romance, with no or little sex, but I’ll probably stick with the more erotic stuff!

Most authors are avid readers. Do you have any favorite authors/books?
Well, like you said, I am an avid reader (although it is getting harder to find time to read, unfortunately). In single title, some of my favorites are Jayne Ann Krentz, Sherrilyn Kenyon and Gena Showalter.

For category romances I love Jill Shalvis and Suzanne McMinn. I’m still lamenting the demise of the Temptation line in the US.

As for e-book authors, there’s too many to name! Plus, there are new ones to read every month.
And that’s just romance!

What is a day in the life of Emma Sinclair like?
Well, I get up and get dressed and shower and stuff then make my way to my computer. I usually spend the morning reading emails and blogs and catching up. After lunch is when I usually start writing. I write (and procrastinate) until my husband gets home from work at about 5. We hang out, sometimes I do some more writing, then eat dinner.

My husband is a computer geek so he spends lots of time on his computer, too, which means that I do a lot of writing in the evenings, too.
Sorry to say that I’m not very exciting.

Besides that all authors are rich, what is the biggest misconception readers have about published authors?
That we lead a glamorous life. As you can see above, that’s not true.
Putting “real” clothes on is a major event for me. I usually wear pajama pants!

What do you always have with you?
I probably should say a book or notebook or something writerly, but really, it’s waterless hand sanitizer. I’m a bit of a germ phobe.

Describe the perfect romantic getaway.
I just got back from it actually! My husband went to a conference in Hawaii and I went with him. It was at a resort, which, if not for the conference, we never would have been able to afford.

During the day I was able to hang out near the beach while he did conference stuff (real romantic, huh?) and then we hung out in the evenings, swimming, lounging in the hot tub, looking at stars, etc.

Neither of us are really “romantic” people so this was perfect for us. It was just the two of us doing things that we enjoyed and being together. What could be more romantic than that?

What TV show or movie would you consider torture to watch repeatedly?
I’m one of the few people in the world that doesn’t like most TV shows or movies, so I find a lot torture. But probably the absolute worst would be anything with Kevin Costner, particularly Waterworld.

Unfortunately, my husband actually likes it – or at least likes to watch it to torture me!

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Well, I’ll invite you all to stop by my website, check out my contests and my blog (where I have occasional contests).

Also, just a reminder that A Walk on the Wild Side is out now at Whiskey Creek Press Torrid.

Thanks for talking with me!
