Delilah Devlin Interview
Fallen Angel Reviews would like to introduce a phenomenal author, Ms. Delilah Devlin.
First off, I'd like to mention your gorgeous new site. It is amazing!
Thanks so much! I worked for over three months with my web designer to get it just right. She did a fabulous job! I wanted Celtic, dark, maybe a little scary-sexy—and for all the written content to reflect my personality.
I decided to do a little research before I sat down to write your questions. Imagine my surprise when I found a list of movies that go from one end of the spectrum to the other! Monty Python and the Holy Grail to Armageddon. Do you find inspiration in these?
I’m going to sound really kooky, but yeah! Monty Python’s In Search of the Holy Grail is the ultimate spoof! I love adding a touch of the ridiculous to the comedies I write—something that will catch a reader unexpectedly and have them drying their computer screen afterward! As to Armageddon—who wouldn’t want every hero to be Bruce Willis? He’s funny, sharp, a hardass—gotta love a hard ass! *grin*
I saw the comment about LadyHawke, can you let those who haven't explored your site in on it? And for those who aren't familiar with the movie, could you give a little more detail?
LadyHawke was made in the 80’s, I think. Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer starred as lovers who were cursed. One was a hawk by day, the other a wolf by night. The soundtrack is dreadful by today’s standards (my daughter snickers when she hears it), but the story is soooo romantic. I highly recommend the movie. It’s the sort of love story I want to tell—but with lots of gratuitous sex!
What do you think was the defining moment that made you realize that, hey, I'm a writer?
I didn’t have “a moment”. I’m the sort of person who plows into adventures without thinking too hard first about what lies ahead. I’ve gotten into lots of trouble that way during my life! When I decided I was going to be a writer, I just did it. When I met other writers and realized that schizophrenia was a prerequisite, I knew I’d made the right choice!
How do you juggle being an author, a worker outside the house, wife and mother?
I’m not very coordinated. I’m also not very maternal. When I decided to write, I told the kids “You know where the microwave is!” They didn’t have that much of an adjustment to make, because I was active Army for a long time and they were accustomed to me being gone even when I was there! Juggling a full-time day job and writing has been problematic. Having to pay bills really cuts into the time I can spend crafting a good story!
Your bio mentions an amazing series of events, can you share a few more details?
Do I have to? Let’s see, there’s the part about being in Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf War—well, I volunteered to go to the Gulf during Desert Storm (remember what I said about being a bit impetuous by nature?). I had more run-ins with the religious police than I did with any enemy SCUDs—something about my blonde hair set them off every time I ventured into public. If I say that I had a great time, will I sound totally nuts? Well, I did. I could write a series of books (mostly comedies) about what a great time I had. Phew! As to nearly being kidnapped and sold by white slave traders—that happened while I was living in Europe. The only thing I’ll say is it involved the Turkish mafia and a rescue by a guy named Yorgo. If you ever corner me in a bar, buy me a drink and I’ll tell you the rest of the story! *grin*
Since everybody needs a break, even when doing something they love, how do you like to spend your time away from writing?
I don’t have a lot of that, but I love to watch movies (fodder for more stories), I love arguing politics (God, don’t get me started on GWB and WMD!), and I LOVE playing with little Alana Bree.
What would you like to accomplish with your writing career?
To sell a million smutty books and make the New York Times bestseller list. But short of that, I would be very satisfied to make a decent living from my writing so that I could give up my stupid day job. And of course, to write more vamps, weres and impossibly stubborn alphas.
What is a day in your life like?
Ugh! Out of bed at 5:00 AM—check e-mail before my shower, makeup, coffee, run to the door because I’m late, drive like a lunatic 64 miles to my crummy day job, pretend to teach bonehead/hormonal teens a thing or two, drive like a lunatic 64 miles home, kiss the baby, read my e-mail while I shovel dinner into my mouth, then open my Work-In-Progress and get lost in the story I’m creating—until 11 PM bedtime.
With 13 + books out there, do you have a favorite?
I loved writing All Hallows Heartbreaker, the first book in the My Immortal Knight series. Emmy was a very fun person to write about—ditzy, blonde, chubby, ingenuous—oh, she reminds me of me! Then there was the second in the series, Love Bites—which I loved because Quentin, the hero, was a smart-ass Brit too yummy not to want to bite. The Pleasure Bot made me laugh while I wrote it. Relentless was so sexy it made me sweat and run through batteries. Oh, I guess I better stop, but you can see I love ALL my babies.
Can you give us a quick peek into what you’re working on right now?
I’m working on four stories right now.
The first is called Jacq’s Warlord, a time travel set in England in 1153 AD, which has already been accepted by Ellora’s Cave for publication. I’m just reformatting it—but it’s 400 pages of reformatting, so not an easy task. I co-wrote it with my brilliant sister, Myla Jackson.
Next is a contemporary western novella for Ellora’s Cave that I’m finishing up. I love writing about the men in my back yard!
Of course, I’m working on the next book in the My Immortal Knight series. I’m about half way through and I can already tell my readers are going to be a bit upset with me—and I’m not telling why!
Last is a story that I am brainstorming in my free moments. I’m not sure where I’ll send it, but it’s a historical paranormal—lots of mystical creatures and battles.
I was lucky enough to be able to read your submission in Ellora’s Cavemen: Legendary Tails III. Close Encounter of The Carnal Kind was great! How in the world did you come up with it?
I’m thrilled you liked my little story! Now that you’ve read a little bit about my life, you can see how I weave bits of me into every tale. My hero was a veteran of the present Gulf War. I know these guys—lived with them and totally “get” them. I thought about what it would be like coming home after losing half your unit and what sort of adventure would actually pull you out of that kind of blue-funk trauma. I thought an alien abduction with a little anal probing would do the trick!
Is there anything you’d like to add?
Just that the Legendary Tails III anthology will be coming out on September 22d—I’m sure I’ll be running some awesome contests to celebrate the release! After that, I have a little historical vampire tale coming out in Chippewa’s next Vamprotica anthology on October 31st. You can read about upcoming releases on my website or by joining my newsletter group by sending an e-mail to: DelilahsDiary-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
