Cynthia Eden Interview

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer some questions for us at FAR- Fallen Angel Reviews. We know a few things about you such as your web site: www.cynthiaeden.com but we are all curious to know more. So by answering these questions you can help us get to know you.

What is the one thing that you as a writer would like to tell us readers about yourself?
I like to try new things in my books. I don’t like to write the same story, over and over. I like to explore new ideas, try new adventures. Yes, I love paranormals, so I will probably always write some type of paranormal tale—but it won’t just be vampires. My stories will also be about werewolves, witches, psychics, and aliens. And I will take these characters into new directions. I like to twist my stories as much as possible to surprise readers. Because isn’t a surprise always fun?

If you could pick one man that was your ideal man who would it be?
My husband. Yes, he’s really my ideal man. Nick is handsome, smart, and super supportive. He’s always encouraged my writing, and I feel certain that he’s my biggest fan.

What is your favorite part of a book to write?
I love writing the beginning of a book. Anything can happen at the beginning—the story can go in any direction that I choose. I love having the freedom to do what I want, to take the characters down any path that I choose…and I also like to try to start my beginnings as dramatically as possible—that way, I can take the reader straight into my world.

Since everybody needs a break, even when doing something they love, how do you like to spend your time away from writing?
I go to the movies—a lot! I love sitting in the theater and becoming completely absorbed in a film. My favorite films are the really bad horror flicks, but I also like to watch action movies and thrillers.

Do you feel as if the characters live with you as you write? Do they haunt your dreams?
The characters definitely haunt my dreams. In fact, I often dream of my story ideas. If I’m having trouble figuring out where I want to go with a particular manuscript, I try not to stress. Usually, if I can’t think my way into the next scene, I can certainly dream myself there! And…I don’t know if this is just me or if it happens to anyone else, but sometimes, I dream of the written words on the page, like I’m reading the events as they unfold. Weird, huh?

What would you say is the strangest or oddest that ever happened to you?
Well, being a huge fan of the paranormal, I’m always going out and trying to find strange or odd things. I’ve visited lots of psychics, gone on tons of haunted tours, traveled to “ghost” spots at midnight…but honestly, nothing super strange has ever happened to me while I’ve been investigating. Sigh…but there is always next time!

Do you have any special rituals to help you get in the mood to write?
I need to have some sort of soothing music playing while I write. Usually, I listen to classical music—Beethoven or Mozart. Other than that, I’m good! Give me my laptop and I can go for hours (as long as I don’t get too distracted by the Internet!).

Do you have a yahoo site where people can join to find out the latest and greatest books out there by you?
I don’t have a yahoo site, but I do have a website—it’s www.cynthiaeden.com. I have book excerpts and descriptions on my site, and readers are welcome to join my mailing list for information about upcoming releases and contests.

If you were to pick a place to write where would the place be?
My perfect writing spot would be outside, sitting under a huge oak tree, with a nice fall breeze blowing against my skin. Since I can’t have that, I usually just sit at my extremely cluttered desk or in a handy recliner.

Do you plan things out or just let things fly?
Ummm…good question…and the answer is…both. Sometimes, I plot out the entire book before I start writing the first chapter. I create an extensive synopsis so that I know exactly where I want to take the story and when I want to reveal information. And, sometimes, I don’t plan at all. I just start writing and go where the story takes me. No synopsis, no character sketches…just a blank page.

If you could pick one thing that had the most influence on you what would it be?
Simple, romance books. I started reading romance books when I was about 13 years old, and, boy, they most definitely influenced me! After the first book, I was hooked. I read voraciously after that. The romance books really opened a new world for me (and allowed me to create new worlds of my own). I learned about relationships from those books, and I learned what I wanted in my own life. Sure, lots of people will point out that the relationships in romance books aren’t always the most realistic ones in the world, but, they are relationships based on love. I realized early on that I wouldn’t settle for anything less than real love in my life, and I realized that I wanted my own happy ending, complete with a perfect hero.

If one of your books mostly closely resembled your life which would it be and why?
Ugh…I don’t think any of my books so far resemble my life, mostly because I like to write about unusual stories. There have been no vampires or werewolves in my life (even though I keep looking for them!). I would say, however, that the heroine I created in The Mating Touch (a story I recently finished) does have a personality that’s similar to my own. She’s got a smart mouth and she’s very independent—and my mother has been telling me for years that I’m just like that!

Do you have any more writing projects in the works? If so can you give us a little info about them?
I have just finished two manuscripts. One is called Night Striker and it tells the story of a very special FBI agent—Evie Smith. Evie Smith is smart, young, and also dead. She’s been recruited to join the new “PARA” division at the FBI. Evie will be hunting down a very unusual group of criminals with her partner, Jon De Luca. Here’s the tagline for the book:

Welcome of the PARA division of the FBI…a special division that fights special criminals…because sometimes, monsters are real…

I’ve also just completed a psychic tale tentatively titled The Mating Touch. The Mating Touch tells the story of Maggie St. James, a human psychic, and Jorlen D’Azar, the alien who’s come to claim her.

And I’m actually working on two novella ideas, as well. In December, Red Sage will publish Bite of the Wolf in Secrets, Volume 15. In that story, I introduce readers to three very special men…er, werewolves. Bite of the Wolf is Gareth Morlet’s story (he’s the pack leader). However, like I noted, I am working on the stories for his two friends, Michael and Alerac…I do love the idea of a werewolf trilogy!

With such glowing reviews on The Vampire’s Kiss, what was the best part of the book?
The Vampire’s Kiss was my first published book. It has a very special place in my heart, so I don’t know if I do have a best part—I was just so excited to write it and find a publisher who enjoyed reading it! The Vampire’s Kiss was my start, the beginning of my writing career…hmmm, maybe that was the best part—it opened the door for me to write new stories and have new adventures.

Thank you so very much for answering the questions as I am looking forward to hearing more about you and the books you have coming out.
