Rachel Carrington Interview

Hi Rachel! Welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us.

In your story Destiny, you have created a short story about a vampire that is sure to have any reader engrossed in the story until it has fully concluded. Have you always had an interest in Vampires?
I think I have, but I only started writing about them last year in my first book, Feel the Heat. Now, I have several more under review and am working on at two more.

Per your website, I see that you have a fifth story coming out for the Spell Series. Can you give up a little hint about this next story?
I’m still playing around with the storyline, but I’m considering doing a prequel to Indigo Spell which is about his parents’ love story. Now, that’s not set in stone, of course. I just love my wizards and can’t seem to let them go.

Do you prefer to write a series or individual stand alone stories?
Oh, definitely series stories. I like keeping up with my characters and following there lives much like a soap opera.

What is your favorite type of genre to write?
Fantasy romance. I like the magic, the new worlds and just the ability to use your imagination to create a world which sweeps the reader away.

From what do you derive the most inspiration for your writing?
I think from life itself. I can listen to a song on the radio, people-watch or catch a glimpse of something on television which sparks my imagination. It doesn’t take much for me to grab a story idea from a quote, an advertisement or something someone says to me. For instance, a while back, a friend of mine was teasing me about not being married and wanting a child. She said just put an ad in the paper which says “If you’ve ever fathered a child and ran, you’re the man I’m looking for.” That became the opening line of one of my books called “Stud Service” which is still in progress.

Do you have any special rituals to help you get in the mood to write?
Not, not really. I just have goals that I try to meet. Sometimes, I have to force myself to writer. Other times, I look forward to it, but I can’t go too many days without it or I start to get irritated. LOL

Since everybody needs a break, even when doing something they love, how do you like to
spend your time away from writing?
I’ll take a bubble bath, give myself a manicure, cross-stitch while watching a good movie, work on a scrapbook, create postcards, bookmarks and brochures, call a friend, watch some television, write in my journal (technically that’s writing, but of a different kind *grin*) or relax with a good book.

Tell your fans something about you they would never guess.
I cannot relax for more than an hour at a time before I feel like I have to be up and doing something. Even when I’m talking on the phone with my friends, I’m responding to e-mails or checking them, writing notes to myself, etc. I’m usually doing two things at once even when I’m writing. Oh, and I’m an e-mail fanatic. I can’t stand to go more than an hour or two without checking my e-mails!

Of all things you have accomplished, is there one accomplishment you are most proud of?
Yes! I recently participated in an anthology book with several best-selling authors including Mary Janice Davidson, Vicki Jo Putney, Susan Grant and Patricia Rice. The book is entitled Bewitched, Bothered and BeVampyred, and all the proceeds to go the International Red Cross. You can buy it at Amazon.com!

What would we find on your bookshelf?
All of Christine Feehan’s books, Nora Roberts’ books and a lot of promotional/marketing books, business books, writing books and inspirational books.

How do you know what to name your books or the characters?
Sometimes I’ll pull them from baby name books or just hear someone mention a word, and I think, that would be a great name for a character!

Do you have a character that is especially close to your heart?
Jaxon. He is the hero in Indigo Spell.

What appeals to you the most about this character?
He started off my wizard series and set the tone. I like his arrogance, his gentleness, his love for Tess and the way he’s willing to risk everything to be with her.

Can you tell us a little about your other upcoming works?
In This Life, Alexander’s story and the sequel to Choices, my time travel romance from Ellora’s Cave is currently in the editing stage, and I’m hoping will be released in the very near future.

Breaking the Spell, the fourth in the wizard series, will be available in the near future from Elloras Cave, and Elloras Cave has asked to see the first three books in the series as well.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
I have a hardback book, With Love from Sam, coming out in December 2005 from Five Star/Gale. I’m still biting my nails waiting for the cover.

On September 12th, I will begin teaching a fantasy course at University for Writers online.

And last, but certainly not least, the paperback version of “Choices” from Elloras Cave will be released on September 28th and will be available at Borders and Waldenbooks.
