Audrey Godwin Interview
Today I am speaking with Audrey Godwin.
Hi Audrey! And welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews! It is great to have you with us today. Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to answer questions for us. The readers would love to hear something about Audrey Godwin.
Tell us about one day in the life of Audrey Godwin.
Well, to begin with, let me say that I am very dedicated to my craft, and begin early in the morning and stay at my computer until sometimes late at night. This ideal day is broken up in pulling out my hair, hitting my head on the wall, or screaming at my characters to do what I tell them to. Some are very headstrong while others just want to sit in a corner and sulk. No, I'm not crazy… I'm a writer. Seriously, though, my days are never the same. One day the words will flow easily from my computer keys, but the next I can't seem to write a sentence that makes sense. That's when I have to take a break… get away… do something… anything. But while I'm doing this I'm still thinking. You'd be surprised how the answer will come to you while preparing to do battle with the grout on your shower wall, or cursing like a sailor to spilled garbage. So, to answer your question, my day is erratic. Some days are good, others are… well… not so good.
Why not share your works with us and plans for future releases?
I have several releases coming out in May from Triskelion Publishing and Silk's Vault,
A Taste of Divinity
God's Anthology
www.triskelionpublishing.com
Cast a Moonlit Spell
One magical moonlit night a statue turns to flesh and blood when a young woman makes a wish for one night of love... but finds a lifetime of happiness.
Pretty Baby
2nd Release - Best Seller
www.triskelionpublishing.com
Warning: Be careful… this one has been sort of controversial. I've been accused of writing baby porn, and one reviewer fell madly in love with my hero, Shadoe Madison. She wanted more stories about him, the sexier, the better! She didn't think an eighteen-year old heroine was worthy of his… uh… talents!
Barely out of the cradle, she's ripe and ready for love. Imagine her thrill when she meets a green-eyed half-breed Indian only too willing to be her... teacher.
Tender Lightning
www.silksvault.com
Note: I'm not sure of the release date, but I'm looking for it sometime in May.
After a magical lightning bolt plunges to earth, Dana Perrin finds herself trapped between worlds. In one she is a contemporary corporate woman yearning for love, in the other she is lost between the pages of her favorite historical romance novel where her sinfully handsome paper hero appears before her in... sensual flesh and blood!
Would you change anything about your writing?
Very definitely. I would love to grow, and learn and get better!
What is your favorite part of writing?
I love to create unique characters… unforgettable characters. In Beautiful Devil there's Dagmar, the housekeeper, who is a lost soul with a tragic past. In Rogue President there's Diego, the transvestite Spaniard that was hired to kill the President, and in Brothers of the Night there's the old/young voodoo queen "Calico" who wipes her makeup off and surprises us all. I believe in colorful characters the way I believe in spices for your food. Without them your food is dull and plain, but apply those exotic spices and it is lifted out of the ordinary and given plenty of pizzazz!
Do you miss your characters when you are finished with their tale?
In a way, but they're never very far away. When I first started writing I could indulge myself a little more and would sometimes bring up a book and read my favorite parts of it, but today I'm so busy I really don't have time. How sad.
What was your reaction when you got your first contract?
I was elated, of course, but kept the secret to myself for a time, just reveling in the knowledge that my fondest dream had finally come true. I let the secret out slowly, feeling that if I said it too loud the publishing company would come back and say, "Nope, sorry, you told too many people!"
Do you have any unfinished projects sitting around?
Do I ever! Between them, and the ones I still have in my head I shouldn't be lacking for writing material for a long time to come.
Do you have a character that is especially close to your heart?
It's hard to say, really, but I think I feel closest to the ones I have allowed to voice my sentiments in a particular situation. These are Trina Lux in Beautiful Devil, Brandi Heartt in Midnight Mistress and Chyna Marsh in Shadow Lover. Of course all my characters have a little of me in them, but these three are probably my favorites.
Do you have any habits that you would like to share with the readers?
You didn't say bad habits, did you? I have lots of those. I'm the kind of person that likes to stay on schedule. If something comes along that knocks me off that schedule I'm like a robot that runs around with his arms waving in the air saying. "That does not compute! That Does Not Compute! THAT DOES NOT COMPUTE!"
Was there any one person or event in your life that inspired you to write your first book?
I used to read a lot and after a while I decided that was what I wanted to do. At that time I didn't stop and consider things such as guidelines, POVs, show don't tell, and all that, I just wrote. In other words, like the hummingbird that didn't know he wasn't supposed to fly, I flew! My first novel, Brothers of the Night became one of my best sellers and is still selling well today.
How would you pen the perfect vacation?
A big, husky, beautiful man, an exotic island in the South Pacific, and me… and my computer, of course!
Do you have a favorite song that you could listen to over and over again?
I adore old love songs. There's one that I used in my book, Tender Lightning, called That Old Black Magic. For those that don't know, it's literally a musical description of the sex act! In the book, the heroine gets lost between the pages of her favorite historical romance novel, and meets the hero of that story in the flesh. Interesting.
Do you outline your stories or just go with the flow?
I would love to outline my stories before I begin writing, but I've tried it, and it just doesn't work for me. As I said before, on my first book, Brothers of the Night I didn't even know how to write a story much less how to outline one. I hadn't had a class, and no clue as to what I was supposed to do. I thought you simply sat down and wrote it, so that's what I did. I've been writing the same way ever since. It might not be the best way, but it works for me.
Have you ever written a screenplay?
No, not yet.
For Fun: Who is your favorite actor?
I love the film industry and know a little about it as you will see in my novel, Beautiful Devil, so all my favorites were those of yesteryear. The sentiments that came out of the mouth of my Trina Lux character were mine, and it took just a little twist of my imagination to turn her into an old actress that was deliciously evil and out of place in today's world. Like her, I always loved the glamour of Hollywood in stars such as Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe. This is even brought out in Pretty Baby as an important part of the story. Truthfully though, the actresses of today leave me cold, but many of the male stars like Antonio Banderas are really hot. I see him as Lance and Stefan Duquesne in Brothers of the Night. Bottom line? Like, Trina, I saw glamour die. Unlike Trina, I'm not mad… I don't th… well… maybe a little.
You website is quite lovely. I love the colors. Do you have a website other than www.audreygodwin.com that you would like to share with your readers?
Thank you, but the website you see there will be revamped soon. The atmosphere will be a little darker and more suited to suspense, thrillers, horrors, etc., which is what I write. I won't say much about it yet, since I haven't had a chance to navigate through the final product, but I really hope you like it.
Thank you so much for sharing time with us today, Audrey. Anyone interested in reading more about Audrey and her great books, please visit her website to read more about her wonderful works. It has been a pleasure Audrey, and I wish you the best with your writing.
