Elle James Interview

Today I’d like to welcome Elle James to Fallen Angel Reviews. Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions for us today Elle!

To start, will you please tell us a little bit about your current release, Dakota Meltdown?
The target of a psychotic serial killer, North Dakota Criminal Investigator Brenna Jensen must find the killer before he kills another or kills her. When the FBI takes over the case, she's forced to work with the egocentric team leader, Nick Tarver to protect her hometown of Riverton, ND. Brenna fights her growing attraction for the agent knowing he could never love her and all her scars.

Burned by his ex-wife, Agent Nick Tarver is determined to ignore his attraction to his newest team member, solve the murder case and get the hell back where its warmer. Working closely with the North Dakota Criminal Investigator, he learns to trust her even though he knows she's hiding something from him. With the snow melting, the river rising and more women missing, Nick must put aside his prejudices and dig a little deeper to discover the truth beneath the surface to solve the mystery and win Brenna's love.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Practicing Good Karma. I try to be happy for other writers and share in their successes. When others are not nice to me or are not nice about my writing, I turn the other cheek and keep on smiling. I believe if you don't like the way someone is acting, don't act like them. And Good Karma is like a boomerang. Throw it out there and it'll come back to you.

When writing, do you adhere to a strict writing schedule or wait until the muse hits you?
I set a strict writing schedule, and try to stick to it, but LIFE gets in the way. No, I don't wait until the muse hits me or I'd never have written a book!

Could you tell us readers a little bit about your upcoming book, Lakota Baby?
Good, I'm working the copy edits on it today!

When Joe Lonewolf got that call that Maggie Brandt's baby was missing, he knew he couldn't walk away. He'd done it once when his reserve unit was called to war in Iraq. Before he'd left his Lakota Indian reservation, he'd told Maggie she didn't have a place in his life as a Lakota and not to wait for him. While he'd been fighting for his country, Maggie married his stepbrother and together they had a son. Now Joe was back, his brother was dead and his nephew was missing. With angry teens on drugs, poverty corrupting the people he's sworn to protect and casino giants calling the shots, will Joe be able to protect Maggie and find her baby before anyone else gets hurt?

How much time do you spend doing research for a story?
Depends on the story. Historicals take longer than contemporary. Some paranormals take a while too. Vampires, witches and werewolves have their own "rules" many believe in. However, I like to build my rules my way. As long as you stick to your rules, you'll be okay.

What is your most favorite part of being a writer? The least favorite?
My favorite part is the when someone reads my book and gets the same sense of emotions and wonder as I had when I wrote it. It's sooo cool when someone "gets it". I like setting my own schedule and not working in the corporate world. Least favorite is having to think about promotion. I love people, and I love to go to book signings, but then I feel guilty I'm not writing pages!

In your writing career, have you received any awards or nominations for your work you'd like to tell your fans about?
My first published book TO KISS A FROG won the 2004 RWA Golden Heart for Best Paranormal Romance. BENEATH THE TEXAS MOON (Harlequin Intrigue - Mar 06) and DAKOTA MELTDOWN (Harlequin Intrigue - Aug 06) both received 4.5 stars and TOP PICK from Romantic Times Magazine.

Where do you get the inspiration for your stories?
Sometimes it's just the image of an opening scene that sparks my imagination. That's how it was with BENEATH THE TEXAS MOON. TO KISS A FROG was a fairy tale I twisted and had fun with. DAKOTA MELTDOWN came from an article I read about the BTK serial killer in Kansas. I get a lot of idea germs from the news and from brainstorming with my sister!

What was the first story you ever wrote?
My sister Delilah Devlin and I co-wrote a novel (and it's still under the bed) about a woman in the Army National Guard. I hope one day to resurrect it, but it needs a lot of work. We both spent time in the military and the book was funny like our experiences!

What are some of your hobbies besides writing?
Egging! I take real egg shells and make jewel boxes, carousels, cinderalla coaches and music boxes out of them like Faberge eggs! They're very pretty and delicate. I use goose, Emu, Rhea and Ostrich eggs. I'm not a master egger, but I do a decent job.

Is there anything else you would like to share with your fans today?
I contracted with Harlequin Intrigue for three more stories in 2007
Cowboy Sanctuary May 07 - 3rd in a 6-book series of Bodyguards Unlimited

Blown Away Sep 07

Alaskan Fantasy (tentative title) Dec 07

And I have many more ideas that'll take me into 2008 and 2009. Stay tuned into Elle James

Also, in February of this year, I made two additions to my muses in the form of a Yorkshire Terrier named Chewy (for Chewbacca) and a Malti-poo named Sweetpea (although she's anything but sweet). They keep me company in my office and make me get up often to take a stroll in the yard.
