I am delighted to be speaking with
Darragha Foster today. Thanks for chatting with us today
Darragha and welcome to FAR!
To start, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am a self-described Psycho Amazon War Bitch from Hell with an Attitude. Okay...not really...that's just a really cool bumper sticker I saw down the street. I'm a BBW with very loving husband and way-too independent teenaged daughter. I have an 18 year old kitty and a 13 year old mini dachshund. And two white rats that we call "The girls." Of course, I also refer to my breasts as "the girls" so my daughter is really freaked out when I say, "Hey, the girls need water." Right now my daughter is in total suck-up mode because she wants something, and I'm getting breakfast in bed and a clean house. Works for me! Even though we're Buddhist (SGI-USA), that whole "it's December and Christmas is just around the corner" still has an effect our kids and their desire to own various electronic devices. Keep sucking up there, baby...Mama likes a clean house, more writing time and coffee in bed!
Can you tell us about the upcoming release of
Studs 'R Us?
Studs is the brainchild of Denyse Bridger. She pulled together a group of authors, and each one of us has written a story featuring a "working man." My story is called Pirate to Pirate and no...it's not exactly about pirates. It's about the attraction of a man and woman who are descendents of pirates! The man is a school custodian and the woman is a teacher. My husband is a school custodian and is one sexy working man, I'll tell you! He gave me the idea for the story, in fact.
Who are your favorite authors? Who inspires you?
I was first inspired by Shakespeare. No kidding. Age 9. Blammo. Discovered Shakespeare and went nuts over it. Got in trouble in school for writing Hamlet's soliloquy on the chalkboard during recess in the 4th grade. My mother went ballistic over that. "What other 9 year old do you have who are reading and memorizing Shakespeare, huh?" She told 'em. Norton Juster (The Phanton Tollbooth), Ursula K. LeGuin (The Earthsea series), John Norman (The Gor books), Libba Bray (A Great and Terrible Beauty) are some faves. Oddly, I read more non-fiction for pleasure. I loved Judith Levine's "My Year Without Buying It." Could I do what she did? I think about it every day, but haven't done it yet! I read lots of ebooks. Everyone should read ebooks. Ebooks totally rock! I recently read "Sacred Secrets" by Roxy Hart and it made me sooooo angry! The book brought out lots of very strong emotions in me. And that's what a good book should do! I also love the way Robin Danner (who co-authored A Witch in Time with me and Xandra Gregory) puts certain phrases together. The way her heroine loses her virginity in her story in A Witch in Time, oh, my! Pop! The scene has stayed with me, that's for sure!
Where do you get the inspiration for your stories?
Example: While watching "Great Hotels" on the Travel Channel, the host Samantha Brown, stayed in this sweet little cottage named "Mooncusser" while on Cape Cod. I was totally enamored with the name "Mooncusser." I couldn't get it out of my mind. I researched it. I thought about it. I developed a plot around it. And now, I'm just about ready to send Darragha Foster's The Mooncusser into my editor at Liquid Silver Books. Inspiration happens all the bloody time. I am continually making sticky notes with new story ideas on them.
What can you tell us about your current release
Devil's Food Kate?
Devil's Food Kate is my highest rated/reviewed book by Mrs. Giggles. Kate Tabor, the heroine, owns an erotic-art bakery called Naughty Bits (after my own Google Group!). A new customer walks in the door to sample her wares and Kate finds herself caught up in a world of godly lust and passion. But she still wants to call the shots. Conflict! Walk-in cooler sex! Cake as an aphrodisiac! That's Devil's Food Kate. Third in my Teaching Old Gods New Tricks series.
I have found that some authors listen to music while they write. Do you listen to music or is it something that is distracting to you?
I listen to various selections from the Lord of the Rings soundtracks, Conan the Barbarian soundtrack (no kidding...the music is fantastic) or other instrumental stuff. If I put on Bon Jovi or something like that, I end up rocking out and not writing!
What are some of your hobbies besides writing?
I like putting chameleons on plaid cloth.
If you could go anywhere, be anyone, do anything for 24 hours, what would it be?
My first thought was: I'd be whomever I need to be to pull all our troops out of Iraq. Someone with HUGE power and pull who could say, "Send them all home NOW" and it would be done, no questions asked. I have about a dozen "second thoughts" but I'll run with what came to mind first.
Where would you say that you get your most creative ideas?
From daily life. Doing the dishes. Cuddling the dog. Watching MTV with my daughter. Last night my husband and I went to Dream Dinners. That's where you put together meals from pre-prepared ingredients (they chop the veggies for you!) and stick the things in your freezer until you're ready to cook them. My husband said I should write a story about a man and women who meet at something like Dream Dinners...so I'm working on putting that together!
What can readers expect to see from you in the coming year?
The Mooncusser, a sequel to The Orca King, a re-release of Love's Second Sight, a vampire anthology entitled Of Flesh and Blood and so many other lovely things :)
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Bookmarkers, pens and sticky note pads. I have lots to share. If you want contact me via my website form with your snail mail address and I'll send you a giftie. Probably not what you had in mind when asking me "what would you like to share" but I take things literally. I have stuff to share!
