Joy King Interview

Today I have the pleasure of speaking with author Joy King. Thanks for being here today Joy, welcome to FAR!

To start, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m in my late 20’s. I live in New Jersey with my son. I began working in the entertainment industry after first interning at a public relations company in NYC. I also attended the Lee Strasburg Theater Institute before accepting a job as Director of Hip Hop Artist Relations at Click Radio, where I developed segments featuring the biggest names in Hip Hop. Now I’m a full time writer and mother.

I really love your website! Did you design it yourself?
Thank you so much!! I did come up with the concept for the website and my web designer, George Urdea implemented my ideas. George is excellent at what he does.

Will you tell us more about your current release Dirty Little Secrets?
Dirty Little Secrets is a raw and edgy tale that follows Tyler Blake who is a young lady looking for love in all the wrong places. Tyler has always dreamed of being a movie star and finding true love. Her mother sets a confusing example by leaving her father for a wealthy and abusive man. Tyler has a series of abusive and destructive relationships while in high school. She graduates and leaves her home state of Georgia for New York to attend college and start her acting career. School quickly becomes an afterthought as she finds herself in the hip-hop scene, socializing with the rich, famous and infamous in and out of the bed. Dating relationships will include a NBA player, rap star, and a music producer. And she will have scars and dirty little secrets from all of them. Tyler only runs into men that want to own her rather than love her. The drama escalates to the point where she has to decide if she’s willing to give up her own soul for the love and fame that she craves.

Has being published changed you at all? If so, how?
It’s an eye opener because I never realized how a book truly affects readers. I have received tons of emails from people who read Dirty Little Secrets and they tell me how deeply this story impacted their lives. That would’ve never happened if I hadn’t gotten published. It made me very appreciative and thankful that I’m able to have a voice that people want to hear.

If you could go anywhere, be anyone, do anything for 24 hours, what would it be?
Wow!! It would be a toss up between Oprah Winfrey and Britney Spears. That’s a clear contrast of the variation in my personality. I would also love to go to an exotic island for 24 hours and lay on the beach drinking margaritas with no stress or interruptions.

Can you tell us a little about your upcoming book Hooker To Housewife, the sequel to Dirty Little Secrets?
I introduce Chantal Morgan the femme fatale of all industry chicks and arch nemesis to Tyler Blake in this scintillating sequel. Hooker to Housewife will keep you wondering if it is fact or fiction because it’s a loosely based story about the lives of entertainers, sports figures, and other celebrities. It takes you deep into the world of power, money and the cost of fame. Starting out as a video chick, Chantal sleeps her way straight into the bed of the most powerful hip-hop business mogul in the game, Andre Jackson. To make sure, she is Andre’s 1st and last baby’s momma and Mrs. Andre Jackson, (by any means necessary), Chantal sets off into a world of scandalous games, vicious lies, attempted suicide and murder all just to get Andre Jackson to the altar and change her title from Hooker to Housewife. Chantal’s world collides with Tyler Blake’s as they both vie for the affection of Andre.

What is the best advice that anyone ever gave you?
The only person that can stop you from accomplishing your dreams is you.

What are some of your hobbies besides writing?
I love to swim, dance and I adore fashion.

Was there any one person or event in your life that finally inspired you to sit down and write your first book?
Yes, the events in my own life and non-stop drama I’ve witnessed with girlfriends of mine. I know so many women who have experienced at least one element of Tyler Blake’s situations in their life.

Who are your favorite authors? Who inspires you?
I love Jackie Collins and James Patterson. My family inspires me and also inspirational stories of people who have faced adversities and struggles but rise above them to achieve their goals.

Almost every author at some point or another suffers from writer's block. Have you ever had that problem? How do you deal with it?
Honestly I wouldn’t say I get writer’s block. Now what does happen is that mentally I get tired and I have to give my mind a break. It’s not the ideas aren’t in my head, my brain just feels drained. When that happens I put the story on pause and come back when my energy is back up.

What’s one thing you would like your readers to know about you?
I want my readers to know that I truly appreciate them. When I read my emails or do book signings the readers always thank me for writing the book but I tell them no thank you. I say that because if readers didn’t support my work I would have no reason to write and I wouldn’t have a job.(smile)

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
I can’t think of anything. Oh yes, for anyone who enjoys street literature I also write under the pen name Deja King. Thanks Fallen Angels for interviewing and I hope you all enjoyed!! Until next time hugs and kisses.(smile)
