Emery LaRue Interview
Hi Emery! Welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with us. I know that I appreciate this opportunity to visit with you.
Hi and thanks for having me!
First of all, can you tell us a little about yourself? When you starting writing? What inspired you to become an author?
Well, I am a 31 year old mother of two wonderful children who keep me on my toes. I have always wanted to write. First I grew up on my Grandfather’s tales and then when I became a mother, I started telling my own. There is a box I have kept that contains several notebooks from when I was younger, and they are filled with the tales I created growing up. Then, through a friend, I met someone who offered me a chance to write with some very talented authors. The hook was set, and all the characters I have had inside of me all these years reeled me in. So, in truth, I guess you could say I have been writing since I could hold a pencil, but until September 2005, it was a dream. Then, I received that e-mail telling me that my story was to be published, and I have been riding that cloud since. My life was and is my inspiration.
What is a day in the life of Emery LaRue like?
Through the weekday, after I get my kids off to school, I do whatever task is needed in the house. After that is complete, I write and plot and plan. There have been times that I look up when I hear the door open and my kids are home. I shake my head at myself, because I had been working close to 7 hours and didn't even notice. There are many projects I am working on, and other projects that I hope to get rolling. Also, I spend time on Sensual Reads and the projects there. So, all in all, I stay busy. However, I do what I love and it makes it all worth while.
What do you use to focus on your writing when life tries to butt in?
My writing really is what keeps me focused. When I am working, I get to become some other woman who is everything I may or may not be feeling that day. I become lost in the world of fiction. It is easy for me to see it all inside of myself, and as the scene comes to life in my mind, I do my best to put it to paper. It is through my writing that I deal with life's little quirks, or even surprises.
To date, what has been the most rewarding aspect of your writing?
Without a doubt, I would have to say its the friends I have made. From readers to authors, and even a very talented web designer, I have made some very wonderful friends who are an inspiration in themselves.
In your recent release through Silk’s Vault Publishing, Tavoli’s Claiming, you created another installment in The Portal series. This one follows Tavoli’s quest to find love and the struggles his endures in order to protect the one he wants. It was amazing. What inspired the character of Tavoli? Do you plan more installments in this series?
In the first book, The Portal, two sisters held my attention and I wanted them strong and determined, but with a past loaded in mystery. Tavoli came to me in book 1, and I knew that Book 2 had to be his story. His character bloomed for me in the first book, and I had no sooner finished Portal and was planning Tavoli. He is sexy and strong, and determined to get what he wants. As for another story, YOU BET! I am now working on Shadow Warrior, Book 3 in the series. Here you will meet Blayde. This one will be a surprise not only to readers, but my previous characters as well. I do intend to continue the series for another 3 books at least. I love The Portal and all who come into it.
In The Portal series, do you have a favorite character? If so, why are they your favorite?
I do have a favorite, though that may change a little. Tavoli came to life inside me and I fell in love with who he was and what he became. Sexy, strong, determined to get what he wanted. The "Bad boy goes good" thing. I will admit it. There is something about a bad boy and his charm that just takes my breath away. Blayde and his story is now wanting out, and the more I know Blayde the more I like him. I don't want to give it all away, but Blayde comes to us in Shadow Warrior, and he is a man like no other. So, Tavoli may find a little competition for my heart this round.
Per your website, I see that you have some new upcoming stories being released as part of anthologies through Midnight Showcase. What is it like to work with various authors to create a larger scale book?
I love being a part of the digests. The authors are so talented and friendly, and the Spellfire collections are a thrill. Working with other authors is something I have always wanted, and I wouldn't trade the excitement I feel with each new digest for anything.
Is there a certain author that you love to write along side? One you would love to write with but have not done so yet?
The list would be endless. There are many authors I would love to write with. I really don't think I could narrow it down to just one. Working on the digests with other authors is as close as I have come thus far to writing along side another writer.
Most authors are avid readers. Do you have any favorite authors/books? What would we find on your bookshelf?
I have many favorites. Among them are Lora Leigh, Titania Ladley, Jaid Black, Shiloh Walker, Erin Aislinn, Karen Kelly, R. Casteel, Cathryn Fox, and the list goes on and on. As for e-books, I love to read the works of many authors. I guess you could say I have hundreds of book, both in-print and e-book that I find I like to read several times. I have yet to read a book I didn't like.
Is there something that you always have with you regardless of where you go?
I always carry a small note pad and about twenty pens. Sometimes a thought or idea hits me, or I see something that I would like to write into a book. That note pad stays as busy as myself. I have to write things down as soon as I think of them, and then transfer all my notes later in the evening. I even keep a note pad on my bedside.
In looking over your website, I find out that you live in the northern part of the United States. What is your favorite thing about your home state of South Dakota?
The history. South Dakota is loaded in it. I live close to the historic town of Deadwood, and not to far from Mount Rushmore. I also have the pleasure of living near Sturgis. Every year I met exciting people through the motor cycle rally. This state has so much to offer. Though I was born and raised in Oklahoma, and the history there is wonderful, South Dakota has so much you couldn't explore enough to take it all in. It gets bone cold here at times, but when that snow falls and settles, it's the most beautiful sight. I won’t even get started on all the cowboys here. If ever I feel I could write a western romance, I am in the perfect place for information. >G<...
When you are not writing, what is your favorite thing to do?
I love to read and read a lot. I also like to read to my kids or plan crafts. My son and daughter both are born story tellers, and I enjoy helping them put their words to paper. I hope one day soon to write a children's book and have my babies’ names right beside mine on the cover. I also like to sit in the floor with a snack tray and let my kids beat the pants off me in one of their video games. When I can, I enjoy dancing. Mostly though, anything I can do with my kids is what I would prefer to do when I take a break from writing.
With a New Year upon us, did you make any New Year’s Resolutions? If so, are they still intact or already broken?
My one main resolution was to complete my first novel. I am still working on that and will take extra time, as I hope to turn this into another series. I also made the resolution to take a lot more time for me. Get a little healthier, and those are going well. I try never to set a goal that I know I would not be ready for. If later in the year I find another goal to set for myself, I go for it then. I believe that you can set a resolution anytime. Never too late to reach for a goal or a dream.
Can we get a teaser for what else you are working on right now? (grin)
At the moment, I am working on Shadow Warrior, Book 3 in the Portal series. A man thought long dead returns, and it will take everyone by surprise. Even the goddess Persephone herself will be surprised. Blayde is a very unique character and also a demanding one. He must fight his inner self to do what he is ordered, or do what he knows is right. It's a joy to write though it will be hard to end. I never want them to end. :)
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
I am in the process of a new contest. A cover model contest is in the works and the prizes are big ones. I also co-own a new site for authors and readers. www.sensualreads.net.
My website was updated, www.authoremerylarue.com and the wonderful sounds of Abney Park, and band from Seattle, can be heard there on the MP3 player. I hope to have the first in the Elements series completed by the end of the year. There is much planned for this new year, and I am having the time of my life.
