Today I am speaking with
Marie Treanor.
Hi
Marie! And welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews! It is a pleasure having you with us today. Thank you for taking time out of your busy routine to answer some questions. The readers would love to hear something about
Marie Treanor.
Hi Linda, I’m very glad to be here – thanks for having me
Marie Treanor, I love your name. Do you enjoy writing historical and things pertaining to Scotland? I love your website and love the part about haunting romance. I also notice you have a vampire comedy; you have quite a list of books,
Marie.
Thank you! I do like writing about Scotland. I live there, and I am Scottish, so it’s good to delve into different aspects of my native culture!
History and historical novels were my first love, so yes, I really enjoyed writing Some Other Sea, which is set in eleventh century Scotland. My first two books for Triskelion, contemporary paranormals, also have historical prologues, so I suppose I am very conscious of the past and how it impacts on the present. But then, I also have a futuristic novel set in Edinburgh!
My vampire comedy, Undead Men Wear Plaid, was another new departure for me, but very close to my heart. I love vampire stories and this one is set in my home town of Glasgow, which has a very special character and sense of humour. It’s all about a reluctant psychic and a 500 year old vampire who’s been forced by a bizarre accident to dress in a stolen antique kilt. He doesn’t care for the taste of his native victims - who eat badly and drink too much.*grin*
What is a typical day like for you,
Marie?
It revolves round my two year old daughter, who rules her house, her parents and her brothers with a rod of iron She’s at the age for getting into all sorts of trouble, though fortunately she still usually falls asleep from total exhaustion in the afternoons and I can get a bit of writing done then - before her brothers come home from school. Evenings are for my husband and family.
What does the future hold for you in upcoming releases?
Lots of exciting stuff! My next book with Triskelion is The Devil and Via, a sexy romance set in Italy, all about Satanism and making the most of life. I love Giancarlo, my troubled hero!
At some point next year, there will be Guitar Man, a sequel to Undead Men…Wear Plaid.
I’m also delighted to tell you that I have a novella coming out with Changeling Press on 28th July – a werewolf tale called Loving the Wolf. There should also be a short Hallowe’en story…
Do you have a favorite part of the book that you love the best to compose?
It depends on the book which parts I enjoy writing most. I always like the romantic bits and the sexy bits! But I like the build-up too, the inter-play between the hero and heroine. And I like building suspense if I can.
What would your fans love to know about you that they would never guess?
Yikes, I’m not sure! Maybe they’d never guess that I’m actually very introverted and straight-laced - no, really, I am!
Where do you see yourself in the next three years?
Do you know, I don’t really think that far ahead? I would like to have some more books out there, maybe one or two in print, have a wider reader base. Ideally, I’d be making a living from writing, but I think that’s pie in the sky!
What makes a great book to you?
Great characters and writing style.
Do you listen to music when you are writing or is there something else you derive as inspiration for your writing?
I do like to listen to music, but nothing too distracting If I listen to certain music before writing, though, it can help get me in the right mood.
What do you do to relax when you are not composing?
I eat good food (preferably cooked by my husband) and drink wine. I read, watch films, get together with friends.
What does your work station look like?
A midden I have an old bureau in my bedroom, and it’s got notes and envelopes and bookmarks poking out of it at all angles. I can barely get the lap top on to it any more! When I have any free time, it always seems more important to spend it on writing rather than on tidying the desk, but it is approaching critical now!
Do you feel as if the characters live with you as you write? Do they haunt your dreams?
Definitely! They talk in my head too. I like it, but it probably makes me a little distracted and uncomfortable to live with
Is anyone else in your family a writer or love to write as you?
My husband writes poetry, though he’s not so obsessive as me – he has many hobbies! Both my sons are good creative writers, so I have hopes of them!
Have you ever written a screenplay or considered doing one?
It’s entered my head, because I like dialogue so much – but I don’t know enough about it and I’ve never investigated it – so far! All my stories come out as books
I've been seeing a number of discussions on the Yahoo groups about Happily-Ever-After. Do you feel that HEA is necessary to a romance novel?
I think it’s the difference between Romance and romance. Books can be romantic and not have happy endings, but they’re not considered to be Romance without one. Romance with a capital R seems to require that particular brand of escapism – HEA. But I think there’s a lot to be said for not knowing the ending to a book, and with so much imagination and innovation around, especially in ebooks, HEA could seem inappropriately constricting. Having said that, though, I personally have terrible difficulty taking happiness away from my favourite characters!
