Devyn Quinn Interview

Fallen Angel Reviews would like to welcome award-winning author Devyn Quinn. Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions for us.
Thanks, Serena. It’s always an honor to be here, chatting with my favorite FAR reviewer.

I'd like to start by mentioning the amazing amount of forthcoming work from you. Holy cats woman, where do you find the time?
I have to admit that several novellas I have coming out are re-issues of older work. Most have been kept off the market for reworking. And, I have to admit that a few have been permanently withdrawn.

You have books coming out from Aphrodisia, New Concepts Publishing, Whispers, Mojocastle, Samhain and Ellora's Cave. Can you tell us how you keep everything straight?
I have a folder for each publisher, and corresponding material lands in each publisher’s box. Right now I am mainly working on the first Samhain book, The Keeper of Eternity, which is just undergoing its second round of edits. In between that, I am writing Fallen, a new goth-erotica novel for Kensington’s Aphrodisia imprint.

How do you write? Are you an outliner? Seat of the pantser? Character driven? Plot driven?
I have a method for outlining a story, which I call Triangling. It’s simple and effective. I draw a triangle on a piece of paper. On each line of the triangle, I list the character’s name, who they are and how they correspond in the story with the character listed on the next line of the triangle. One line of the Triangle might have a listing of several antagonists to intersect with the protagonist character. Under the Triangle, I list an outline of chapters and what that chapter should cover/introduce. Then I set to writing, most of it set in my mind. Some surprises usually arise, though. I never know just where a book is going till the end is written.

Who's your favorite character that you've written to date?
Easily, hands down, that is Morgan Saint-Evanston, my moody medieval assassin in the Keepers of Eternity series. Not only is he so fun to write for, he’s developed into a personality all his own. He never fails to be fun to write for. And what I love is that he’s finally going to New York, as I introduced him as a secondary character in Sins of Flesh. I’m hoping readers will be intrigued enough to want to check out his series .

If you could become one of your characters, who would it be?
Oh, that’s a hard one. I like so many of my characters, but I’m going to fess up and say Morgan. Being immortal and the eternal keeper of the gate between natural and supernatural… Hell, yeah. I am so there.

What is it about dark and gothic writing that draws you?
I grew up on the old gothics, Dark Shadows and the Night Stalker series. I love the idea that the shadows are infested with every kind of creature you can imagine. It’s so much fun to make up other worlds and let the demons run wild.

How has becoming a published author changed you?
I haven’t changed a bit. Writing is a job like any other. I have deadlines to meet, and if I don’t produce, I don’t get paid. I still clean house, scoop the litter box, drive a 15 year old car (hey, it is paid for) and shop at Wal-Mart to save money.

Since everybody needs a break, even when doing something they love, how do you like to spend your time away from writing?
My biggest luxury is renting a few movies. I rarely eat out and if I can make it to the library a couple of times a month, I am doing good.

I've been able to read Flesh and the Devil and was blown away by the world that you created. Coming soon from Aphrodisia, can you tell us about it?
Flesh and the Devil was actually released as a short novella a few years ago. Then it caught the eye of Kensginton editor Hilary Sares. She liked the concept, but she did not like the original slant the story took. She asked for a complete redo, which practically made it a whole new book. New characters were added and old ones were retooled to fit a different scenario. All in all, it is much better than the novella. Flesh and the Devil is slated for an April 2007 release. Here’s a quick glimpse:
Taste the forbidden. The hunger was there.

The game he was playing was dangerous, but Brenden Wallace couldn’t help himself. Part of the thrill of working undercover vice was the ability to live out the erotic fantasies he’d never risk trying in real life.

Brenden hardly dared to move. He didn’t even breathe. Closing his eyes, he relished the smooth glide of silk circling his wrists. The soft bite of the fabric into his skin sent a chill whispering down his spine.

The touch of a fingertip tracing the curve of one ear caused the fine hairs on the back of his neck to rise. A voice of smoky-rich timbre drawled, “Too tight?”
Brenden licked parched lips. “Tighter, honey. I want to feel the burn.”

A tug on the scarf answered. Tightening. Binding. “Better?”

Arms stretched around the back of the chair he sat in, Brenden tested the strength of the knots. They held, solid and unyielding. The material chafed, a not-so-unpleasant sensation. “Yes.”

His captor reappeared. The woman was a paid escort, hired for the evening. The service she worked for charged three hundred dollars for the pleasure of her company. He knew her business, didn’t know her name, but by the look of her, she was worth every penny.

A muscle twitched in his jaw. His penis stirred, cramped in the confines of his tight jeans. How far would this one go to entertain a lonely man? Having kinky sex wasn’t illegal in Louisiana. It was only criminal if cash traded hands for erotic favors. Then it was prostitution.

And someone had to get arrested.

Looking at her, his thoughts veered from professional to personal. Tall and slim, her dress was tight and red, clinging to every lush curve and perfectly matching her bright red stiletto "f*** me" pumps. No longer tied up with the scarf matching her outfit, her black hair cascaded around her shoulders like the spread of a raven’s wings.

That scarf was around his wrists.

Taste the forbidden. To play his role believably, Brenden had to live it.

She smiled. “You like playing dangerous games?” Her parted lips revealed perfectly white teeth. The cuspids were slightly elongated and came to neat points, enhancing her hovering feline quality even more.

Heavy awareness pulsed through his veins. “It’s part of the thrill that makes life worth living.”

His words seemed to amuse.

She bent, parting his legs. As if lit from inside, she radiated heat that practically screamed wanton female. Screamed it loud enough to arouse the male animal in him to an unbearable degree. She wasn’t wearing a bra and the thin fabric of her dress clung to her nipples, outlining their prominence.

Her warm palms moved up his inner thighs. “Maybe. Maybe not. The things we think are deadly sometimes really aren’t.” She guided the tip of her tongue to tease an incisor. “And the things we think safe are sometimes most deadly.” Her words were menace cloaked in crushed velvet.

The intimate contact jarred. She was so close that Brenden could smell her heat, the scent of her arousal. Potent and mysterious, the cloying odor was enhanced by the addition of some exotic oil. His erection pressed, thick and hard, against his tight jeans. Closing his eyes, he shifted in his seat, letting a ragged breath escape. Say one wrong word, make one false move and the entire investigation would be blown.

Not only do you have a number of books coming soon, but you also have two extremely intriguing books in the works; Fallen and Dirty Little Secrets. Can we get a peek?
Fallen is still ongoing in the writing process. As for Dirty Little Secrets, it was put on hiatus for the moment.

Do you have anything else in the works at this time?
Once I finish work on Fallen, Before Night Falls and Sins of Flesh (also sold to Kensington), I have developed a new series for MojoCastle Press, which I will begin working on next year.

The premise:

"The manuscript is old...very old. Its title is simple, deceptive. Delomelanicon. Penned by Satan, the text has disappeared & reappeared through the ages. Unleashed, the writings will again infest mankind. Those who possess the book will be taken on a journey that will change their
perception of body, mind & spirit."

Now, the plot device that makes it a series: The book can not be destroyed, not burned, torn up, anything. It can only be given away, passed on to a new victim, who will awaken their own demon... and so forth. Each subsequent book begins with the acquiring of the book by the next victim.

Not only do you have a website, but you also have a blog and a Yahoo Group. Is there anywhere else we can find info on your assorted works?
I have a page on My Space

Is there anything you'd like to add?
Just that I hope readers enjoy my work. If they do, I love hearing from them, so drop me a line.

Thanks again for taking the time to chat with us. I look forward to reading more from Fallen and reading your other books as well.
Thank you for having me, Serena. Always a pleasure.
