Will Belegon Interview

Fallen Angel Reviews would like to welcome author Will Belegon. Thanks for joining us.
It is truly and honestly my pleasure.

Tell your fans something about you they would never guess.
Until my sophomore year of high school I was quite seriously considering the priesthood as a vocation. The idea of being able to help people held a strong appeal to me and I have always been very interested in whom we are and why we do the things we do. Then everything changed, and I’ll bet if you’ve read my work you can figure out why. Suddenly celibacy did not seem worth it. Paula, if you’re out there reading this I just want to say thank you very much. That first kiss literally changed my life.

Of all things you have accomplished, is there one accomplishment you are most proud of?
Being a father. Nothing could ever be more important to me then my children and how they make me feel. I relish the title of “Coach” for my son’s little league team even more than that of “published author”.

What is your favorite part of a book to write?
I love the feeling when you start writing and the characters are introducing themselves, not only to the reader but to the writer as well. I’ve had so many stories that abruptly changed as I began to get a feel for who my characters were.

From what do you derive the most inspiration for your writing?
That question has a different answer for almost every piece I’ve ever written. Some of it is from the most mundane sources. Often there may be hints of my own experiences or those of friends thrown in, but it can just as easily be completely unrelated. I’ve written stories that grew out of a bruise or the way a girl was leaning in to whisper a secret in a friend’s ear. My poetry is even more random.

I guess the real answer is that I derive my inspiration from the details of our ordinary lives. I take those little moments and imagine what would make them extraordinary.

Since everybody needs a break, even when doing something they love, how do you like to spend your time away from writing?
I try to spend a lot of time with my family. I know that I will never be able to recapture these years and I don’t want any regrets. I’m also a big sports fan. I buy into the concept that sports can be a release for our everyday pressures, both as a participant and as a fan.

I also love the movies and the theatre. I’ve been a fan of Elizabethan drama since high school. Not just Shakespeare, but Marlowe as well. For more modern stuff I actually prefer musicals.

My movie collection is very eclectic. While I have an appreciation for classics (Casablanca remains my all time favorite) I also like things as far ranging as the Before Sunrise/ Sunset movies or well done science fiction like Serenity.

Do you outline your stories or do you just write as you go?
I don’t outline as a matter of habit, but I have done so. If you have a plot with many twists and turns I think it is very beneficial. However, I don’t want to remove the element of surprise. Some of my favorite twists and turns in my own work are things that I never imagined were going to happen when I sat down to write. There are times when the story tells itself and I am just along for the ride. The key at those times is just to get it on paper before it gets away.

Do you feel as if the characters live with you as you write?
Absolutely. And sometimes they don’t leave.

You currently have one book out at Phaze that you co-wrote with Alessia Brio. Can you tell us a bit about Switch?
Switch is a story that grew out of a situation that Alessia wanted to explore. She was playing with the idea that is the major event in the story and she decided it was a perfect vehicle for the two of us and asked me if I wanted to write it with her. The story concerns two characters from Alessia’s earlier work, Erotique.

Bruce and Mandy are lovers and business partners with a playful attitude and a knack for finding adventure. One night they tire of the busy schedules they have both been keeping and decide to have a night to themselves. They start off thinking about a twilight picnic, but since the weather is looking stormy they move things indoors.

The possibilities of play with finger foods and the privacy of their bedroom, combined with a piece of inventory from Mandy’s adult toy store, start to heat things up. But then something happens that dramatically spices up their evening. It is this event that provides the title and made the story require the attentions of a mixed pairing of authors.

What do you have in the works right now?
In the next few weeks, Phaze will release Amichu, an adventure in which Bruce & Mandy find themselves on a trip to Easter Island due to an old connection of Mandy’s late Aunt. The two of them having the talent for trouble that they do, things soon get quite hectic and quite erotic.

To support both Switch and Amichu, I will be appearing at the Happy Endings Lounge in New York City on August 10th along with several other Phaze authors, including my partner. We will read from our work and sign books and autographs. It will be my first public appearance as a member of the Phaze family.

I am also working on a love story with a supernatural twist set in San Diego and Alessia and I are working on the sequel to our upcoming Artistically Inclined which is due out soon from Venus Press.

How has being published changed your life, if at all?
It is an incredibly validating thing. Even though I already had fans from when I was putting my work out there for free, there is always that little doubt that creeps in, that you just aren’t quite good enough. Being published removes some of that doubt and gives you courage to keep taking chances in your writing.

Any advice for aspiring authors?
I’ll borrow some. “He who hesitates is lost!” You have to start writing. Get it down and fix it later. Then as soon as you have a beginning, middle and an end… show it to someone. Don’t wait for it to be perfect. It never will be.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Success. I think there is plenty to go around and I would like all of us to get some.

Thank you again for taking the time to answer a few questions.
Well, thank you for wanting to ask them. I’ve been happy to do this and happy to spend time on the chats at Fallen Angels with my Phaze compatriots…I’m quite flattered that FAR is interested in me.
