Nikki Alton Interview
Welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews interview with the multitalented author Nikki Alton she is such an interesting person that it would take years to get all of the questions answered so we just wanted to ask her a few.
I know that you are a good author because I have read your books. What should the readers expect to see from you coming soon?
Well first of all thank you for the compliment ! Nikki, is working on a book about a trend of somewhat public, um, coupling and a relationship that gets its start that way but soon becomes intensely private and very passionate. Also on some thematic ménage novellas. And, a very cool, dark paranormal with a very erotic hero who manages to fall in love and defeat the devil, too. Genie is working on a couple of different romantic suspense type stories, one set in Chile, one in Oregon, one an LA detective kind of thing.
What are you favorite foods to make in the microwave? LOL I have a microwave cookbook, do you also?
A microwave cookbook is probably waaaay too sophisticated for me, ha. Favorite foods: melted cheese on King’s Hawaiian bread (my famous “nuked cheese”); nachos (with pre-cooked shredded chicken, beans, and cheese - a melted cheese trend I never realized before), and frozen egg rolls.
Along with your writing you have written on staff for ABC-TV's Port Charles; written, produced, and directed reality programming and documentaries for The Learning Channel, PBS, and and HGTV, as well as numerous television commercials and corporate videos, and the independent film, Losing Hope. You’ve directed such notable corporate films as “Santa Goes Shopping at Frederick's of Hollywood” and “Let's Watch the Big Metal Machine Parts go Up and Down For Twenty Minutes While the Boring Guy Says Stuff.” What brought you to write romance and erotic books?
My first book, which was actually literary fiction in trade paper published by a small press, Dreamtown, was based on a screenplay I’d optioned a number of times but never made it to screen. Liked the script too much to let it go. So I turned it into a book. It’s a love story, and it’s a sad love story, but apparently not really “romance” fiction. It got great reviews, no distribution etc. So I wanted to be mass market. I was aiming for mystery, but moved over into romantic suspense, and that kind of more or less was edged over into romantic contemporary more by publishing trends than anything else. The erotic romance came about through a very nice invitation from my publisher to participate, and I certainly enjoy writing it!
A produced screen and television writer, your work spans a variety of genres from supernatural thriller to romantic drama, action, family, teen, and comedy. Wow, now as an author who writes such great books. Was it hard to make the transition?
No, I can write in just about any genre or style - except historical, wouldn’t attempt that, too much research etc. I probably couldn’t do sci fi either, same reason, plus world building etc. As to scripts to novels, not hard at all - I like novels better because I can spill out the characters thoughts and feelings as well as actions. However, I still remain a very visual writer; at least so people have said. Oh, and thank you for another compliment!
In August 2006 your erotic from Kensington Aphrodisia's The Cowboy Collection - Rodeo Man came out. Can you tell us a little about it?
Rodeo Man is a very erotic romance between two disparate people - rodeo cowboy Grant and urban magazine writer Anna. Both are driven, in their own ways, to find their life’s passion - Grant’s has always been the rodeo, but maybe Anna is coming up in the ranks there. Anna might just have to admit Grant is hers. And be okay with that. They really understand each other, in all ways.
January 2007 there's more suspense with Five O'Clock Shadow, from Kensington/Zebra. Can you give us a peek at the book?
Absolutely! Jessie Adams, an LA area indie rock DJ, part time musician, and full time fool for long haired rockers makes a run for local political office to help save her best friend's music club. And in helping out she soon finds danger in a stranger’s threats and an intense affair with Chuck, a cop with his own cause, who is one very determined, very passionate guy.
My tag line for the book is “When your life depends on surviving both love and a political campaign, winning is only half the battle.”
What is the least favorite thing that you absolutely put off doing?
Writing wise - looking for representation.
Other wise - tax returns.
If you were going to take off on a road trip where would you go?
Well three summers ago we did the National parks of Utah, two summers ago we did Wyoming and Montana, and this year we did Washington and Oregon. I think this summer honestly we are going to be in Hawaii because my daughter wants to take some classes at U HI Manoa and it’s a good excuse to spend a long time there. Not too much driving, except circular, there on Oahu.
BUT if I were planning another long road trip right now I think I would do either Eastern Oregon into Northern Nevada, (we missed John Day area in Oregon and Ely/Great Basin in Nevada, Idaho (we went to Salmon but not up into the mountains from there), through Montana to the Dakotas so the kids could see Mt. Rushmore, and the Badlands, and loop down into the plains states to see the dunes in Nebraska.
OR I’d go through Arizona, Sedona, Monument Valley, a repeat stop in Moab (we love Arches National Park) and onto Durango and Mesa Verde, then down into New Mexico, Albuquerque.
OR I’d do Texas. Great Bend National Park sounds gorgeous, and from there head on over to Austin and San Antonio, never been there, only to Houston.
OKAY, you got me started, lets say I have all the time and money in the world, from Texas I’d go on to the deep south, beaches in Alabama, stuff like that. Oh yeah, that would be very cool.
Can you tell I want to write travel books someday?
What is the accomplishment that means so much to you in life?
Having my children and teaching them.
If there was one thing about you that you want the reader to know what would it be?
I love to write. I try to write something that will touch you or move you in some way. I love to write what people want to read. I hope you want to read me!
I am aware you also write as Genie Davis, is it hard to keep Nikki Alton and Genie Davis straight?
No, not really. Although sometime it might be fun for them to write a book together. Nikki is more explicit than Genie in her love scenes of course. And Nikki can be a little darker, at least right now.
If there was one thing that is your pet peeve, what is it?
In writing - that everything has to be so tightly genre specific, honestly. I mean everybody likes to eat spaghetti, right? Not only Italians? But readers and writers of romantic suspense are not supposed to be the same ones who read erotic romance or gasp choke literary or mystery...
In life - driving on the freeway in LA. It gets worse every minute. I don’t mind putting 4000 miles on the car in a summer, but the last two hundred, around here, arrgh.
Do you have a certain way or a routine that you do before you write?
In general first I read my e-mail, then I write. But not always. If I’m really into something or I’m just busy, I ignore my e mail entirely until the end of the day. I also in general get something for breakfast, like Yoplait’s chocolate whip yogurt or maybe some oatmeal. My favorite time to write is before anyone is up, but that doesn’t last long because I don’t get up as early as I used to. I used to get up at 5 when I wrote for TV.
Do you carry a pen and paper everywhere or do you keep it all your story ideas in your head?
I do carry pen and paper everywhere - a steno book - but I usually use it for grocery lists. It depends on the length of time I’m somewhere (if bored and in dentists office I can always come up with a few new ideas or riff on what I’m writing now)
What is the one thing that you could not live without in your life?
My children.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Buy my books (both Nikki’s and Genie’s!) The Model Man was SET during the holidays, and it was a debut book, so it’s still less expensive that a cup of that good peppermint coffee drink you could enjoy, but it has so many more calories, and if you’re me, you’ll spill it all over the car anyway. And come on, who doesn’t want a Cowboy for Christmas. Hmm. Like that title...
One more thing, I don't have a yahoo group or anything, but I do have websites of
www.geniedavis.com and www.nikkialton.com and two blogs All the World's a Page and GenieDavis.
With the holidays upon us, The Staff at Fallen Angel Reviews would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer our questions and wish you and yours a wonderful safe happy holiday.
Thank you, very much, for having me!
