P.C. Cast Interview
Fallen Angel Reviews would like to welcome the fabulous author of the Goddess Summoning series as well as the fantastic Partholon series, P.C. Cast. Thank you so much for visitng with us today.
First of all can I just say thanks? I was finally able to pick up and read the Partholon books and am just awed by the different characters and plots that you have. Can you give us the story behind the story? Where did you find the inspiration for these rich tales?
What a lovely compliment! Thank you! I was inspired to create Partholon several years ago when I decided to write The Book, and by that I mean the book I would most want to read. Naturally, a good part of that involved setting the book in a world I would love to read about. So I based my world (very) loosely on Celtic mythology, sprinkled in bits and pieces of my favorite places in Europe, and then added a healthy dose of Oklahoma (the Centaur Plains is completely Oklahoma’s Tall Grass Prairie). I made Partholon matriarchal, but without taking the dignity and strength away from my male characters. And there you have Partholon, or as one of my editors calls it, PC Land.
Originally entitled Goddess By Mistake now out as Divine By Mistake, the first in this series introduces us to an Oklahoma teacher that has a quirky sense of humor and a wonderful way of looking at things. How much of you is in Shannon?
Embarrassingly enough, I’m very much like Shannon.
How did the title change come about?
My contract for the Goddess Summoning Books with Berkley prohibits me from using “goddess” in the title of any of my books for other publishers. So that’s why the Luna edition had to have a title change.
I was excited to read that there will be a third book with Shannon at the forefront. Can you tell us a bit about it?
Well...Shannon isn’t exactly at the forefront in the third book, DIVINE BY BLOOD, but she is in the book, and you do see what happens to her in the future in Partholon. The book’s heroine is Morrigan, Rhiannon’s (yes, the real Rhiannon) daughter. Now, this will confuse you when you get to the end of DIVINE BY CHOICE, but trust me. You’ll see how it comes about in the next book. Promise. Also, this is the big that ties together all of the Partholon novels, Elphame’s Choice, Brighid’s Quest, Divine by Mistake, and Divine by Choice.
You have a new Goddess Summoning book coming out in the spring of 2007, can you tell us about that one as well?
My June 07 Goddess Summoning book is GODDESS OF LOVE, and it’s about Venus, who comes to Tulsa on a shopping spree with Persephone (she simply must have a pair of those black alligator cowboy boots!). While she’s in the modern world, Venus’s aid is “accidentally” invoked by a mortal who most definitely needs a makeover. What Venus doesn’t realize is that the little mortal is not the only one whose life needs a makeover. The Goddess of Love herself needs to make some changes. This book is funny and very hot, and I’m definitely looking forward to its release!
Your books are so full of identifiable emotion, is it hard to write certain passages? Do you find yourself crying along with the characters?
Some scenes are very difficult for me to write. I’m not detached from my writing; I get very involved with my characters, so what happens to them matters to me. And, yes, I bawl my eyes out in my books. Actually, my daughter and I just turned in the second book in our YA paranormal series for St. Martin’s, THE HOUSE OF NIGHT, and something really bad happened to a main character. It depressed my daughter and me for days. Literally. It stopped both of us for writing for several days each. It was awful, which means it’s a fantastic scene that will be utterly unforgettable. But it was certainly hard on the authors!
Another example is a scene in DIVINE BY CHOICE where Shannon’s Dad (who is totally my dad) is almost killed when he breaks through the ice in a frozen pond trying to save his dogs. This happened in real life, and my dad did almost die. It was with his permission that I used the scene, but it was probably the most difficult thing I’ve ever written.
I went to look up something on Amazon and happened to look at your list of books. At the top it says 'Related Searches: angela knight, christine feehan, gena showalter' How does that make you feel?
Makes me feel great! Although I think my books are a lot different from other paranormal authors’ books, especially my Goddess Summoning Series wherein I really focus on bringing out the inner goddess in every woman.
Last time we spoke, in February, you had mentioned that you wanted learn Italian, take pottery classes, or travel around the world. Have you had a chance to do any of that?
Sadly, I’ve been so busy with deadlines that I haven’t done any of that! But I’ve promised myself that I’m going to get back to Venice in 2007, even if it’s just for a long, fabulous weekend!
What else do you have in the works?
Let’s see, I’ve already mentioned the YA paranormal series I’m writing with my daughter. The first book in THE HOUSE OF NIGHT series, MARKED, will be released in May 07. I’ve never written about vampires before, and I think Kristin and I have created a unique new vampyre mythos, so I’m excited to see how it’ll be received. I can’t wait till DIVINE BY CHOICE will finally be released in December! Just in the past couple days the other three authors (MaryJanice Davidson, Sue Grant and Gena Showalter) and I have been finishing up negotiations with Berkley about a MYSTERIA II anthology, which is scheduled for release early in 2008. And I do have a new series up my sleeve, but it’s not at the announcable stage yet!
Thank you again for taking the time to talk with us. If you'd like to read more about Ms. Cast and her books, you can take a look at her website.
Thanks so much for the interview! As always, it was fun fun fun!!
