Emery LaRue Interview

Today I am speaking with Emery LaRue.

Emery, you have an awesome website. And spellbound and breathless, why not tell us about Relative Dreams – the cover is stupendous. It really draws the reader to the book.
Relative Dreams is a romance/ghost based on Elizabeth Bathory. A woman from the 17th century who in fact killed many young ladies for the purpose of bathing in their blood. I decided I wanted to take this woman of history and create a romance. The cover is among my favorites. M.L. Benton of Moonglade Designs did a fantastic job and created a cover that fit the story so well. The woman on the cover looks beautiful. But the more you read Relative Dreams, the more sinister she becomes.

Emery, are there other works in the process?
There is always more work in progress. I am working on the finale of The Huntress, Book 4 in The Portal Series. I also have a story in the works based on The Mist Walker. As well as a few suspense.

Do you get along well with your editors?
I am a writer who looks forward to edits. I have been lucky enough to work with some great editors. So far, as of yet, there have been no major issues.

Where do you get the inspiration for your stories?
Just about every place I look. I live in an area loaded with history. My favorite thing is to snag an idea and twist it around. I never run out of ideas around here.

What would you say is your favorite genre to compose?
I love the paranormal, but my favorite has to be suspense, with a serial killer on the loose. I enjoy the mixing and twisting this genre needs to make it all work.

When you are choosing your genre, who decides, you or your characters?
I try to make all the decisions, but my characters usually win out. Many times I have started a project, and started over because it just didn't fit. So all in all, I would say the characters have the finale say.

While writing, how does the story develop for you? Do you go from start to finish or create scenes as they come to you?
I start with a basic outline, with points I want to make sure I fit into the story. Until I come to that point, I let it flow, and make a note of additions. Sometimes you start out with the perfect story, and end up with something better as it plays out in your head while writing. It's almost like a grocery list. You write your list, but how many times do you buy only what's on it? Me, I never do. I seem to always be adding something.

What are the elements of a great romance for you?
For, one, great romance, I think it can take several things. It's more about how you add it all in. Drama, sex, danger, tension that just keeps building. All of this rolled into one great story that has you spitting mad or sighing with the ending. I have actually become mad at one of my characters, and I knew right then I was very involved in my own story.

What is the hardest part of writing/the easiest for you?
The hardest part for me is ending the story. I never want to say goodbye to my characters. The easiest is allowing it to flow. I enjoy playing it out in my head and watching it come to life as I write it.

Are you in control of your characters or do they control you?
I would have to say it's a 50/50 deal. Sometimes it just doesn’t work and the characters let me know it.

Did you always dream of becoming a writer?
I have always wanted to be a writer and would not trade anything, the good or the bad, for a single change. I have had very good points, and very low points, but I would never change a thing. I can't see me being anything else, other than a full time mom. I love what I do, and hope to do it for the rest of my days.

Is there any specialty you look for in the perfect man?
I may get myself in a little trouble here, but I don't think there is a perfect man. Not even in fiction. To me, if there is a perfect man, then I got lucky and rest beside him every night. To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't want a perfect man in life or in the fictional world. It would be boring. *G*

What would your readers be surprised to learn about you, Emery?
I am one of these people that if I can't be working, I would rather be fishing. Yes, I love to fish. I make most jokes about men and fishing look down right out of character.

For Fun: Nice warm soothing bubble baths or hot showers?
I love bubble baths. Showers are great, but nothing beats a bubble bath. *G*

Do you have another website other than, www.authoremerylarue.com that you would like to share with your readers?
My website is about to make some changes. We are taking on a whole new look. I also have a review site, www.sensualreads.net and am a part of the www.moongladeeliteauthors.com. Stop in and see us!

Emery, it was so good having you with us today. We look forward to more of your great works.
Thanks so much! I enjoyed it.
