Denyse Bridger Interview

I am delighted to be speaking with Denyse Bridger today. Thanks for chatting with us today Denyse and welcome to FAR!
Thanks very much. It's wonderful to be here with you and your readers!

To start, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hmmm... Let's see... I'm from Eastern Canada, born on one of the country's island provinces, Newfoundland, and have lived in another of the Maritime provinces, Nova Scotia, since I was about five. I can't remember a time when I didn't want to write, and I love everything about this process of creating stories for other people to enjoy. (At least I hope everyone's enjoying them! ) If you ask anyone who's known me for years to describe me, the word eccentric never fails to come up rather quickly! I love people, dogs, and life in general -- in any order you prefer!!

Your current release Out of Hell is the first book in The Devane Files. Could you tell us more about this book and the series?
This is my first venture into the area of mystery and romance as a combined genre. The Devane Files is an on-going series set in Victorian era London, a setting that's long been a source of fascination for me. Michael Devane is the central character in this series, and he's a fictional addition to the lore of Jack The Ripper. Devane is an unusual detective, he's equal parts clairvoyant and opium addict, with a haunted past and a tortured soul. I've connected Devane to the Ripper murders on several levels, all of which play a part in his sometimes brooding personality. He's got a past link to one of the Ripper victims, and was part of H Division, the special branch that was responsible for the investigation that nightmare Summer and Autumn of 1888. In OUT OF HELL, the first installment in the series, Devane is called in to investigate the murder of a really nasty man called Robert Bradshaw, and when he meets the new widow, Bethany, they discover they have a lot in common, and the bond is almost inevitable. But, as the investigation progresses, Michael is also in the awkward position of suspecting Bethany of murder, or at the very least covering up for who did kill her husband. When they fall in love and begin an affair that's something of a scandal, the truth that emerges isn't what either of them anticipated. This book also has the dubious distinction of being one of the few I've written that I actually like myself. The second book in the series is already contracted and should be out in a few months. (An Unspoken Betrayal) After that there are two others planned, and I would like to think there could be more if readers like Michael.

You have some really great book covers, is there any particular one that's your favorite?
It's gotta be the one the amazing April Martinez of Liquid Silver Books did for Out of Hell. The one for my next book, a historical vampire tale set for Halloween release, is also stunning. (Descent Into Darkness) There's an excerpt for this title on my website now, and the book is really a combination of elements; horror, romance, sex, and a whole lot of decadence. Descent Into Darkness is also my second full-length novel for Liquid Silver Books.

My Immortal Beloved is due to be released soon, could you give us a peek at what it’s about?
This is really a "mind-candy" novella for me. When I first started writing, I wrote a lot of fan fiction. That's to say, stuff based on my favourite television shows or movies that really caught my imagination. In fact the very first story I ever saw go into print was based on Miami Vice, if you can believe it?! So, when my brain gets too overloaded with the endless ideas I have for my own books, I occasionally go back and play in someone else's world. That's the case with this book. We again have the Victorian era as the setting, which is part of the appeal for me, obviously. My Immortal Beloved is actually based on Stuart Townsend's portrayal of Dorian Gray in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I loved the film, and I was really upset when they killed off Dorian Gray, who was to me the most interesting character in the movie! So, I decided to bring him back to life. What can I say, it's the romantic in me?? As a nice full-circle kind of thing, the company publishing this book is the same one that published the Miami Vice tale all those years ago... There's an excerpt on my website and my blog.

My next "pro" release is a vampire novel called Descent Into Darkness. As I said previously, this is a book with a lot of elements at work in it, not the least of which is the central character, who is an ancient vampire made over two millennia ago in very unusual circumstances. The book begins in San Francisco, in the year 2000, and travels back to Alexander's beginnings. As the story comes forward, we settle into the 1700's, in a small town in Massachusetts. That's where the bulk of the story is told, and readers come to see that Alexander is a very complex character, something of a monster, but one who is also seductive and wholly without conscience or real humanity. I don't write nice vampires, what can I say? This is a dark and deadly tale, but if you like them slightly twisted, you may just love this novel!?

Of all things you have accomplished, is there one accomplishment you are most proud of?
The book I am most proud of is my fantasy novel, As Fate Decrees, which is due for release next Spring. The publishing house is a traditional print publisher, EDGE Science Fiction & Fantasy, and the trade paperback release is set for late March/early April of 2007. Six months later the book will go into wide release in the US and internationally, though people anywhere can order it direct before then, rather than wait for it to turn up in bookstores. I spent a number of years working on this novel, and researching it. It's set in Ancient Greece, and relies heavily on Greek Mythology and the stories of the Gods of Olympus. The second part of the book is set in modern Athens. The book is my longest work to date, and like everything I do, romance is a big factor in the plot, as well as the eternal champion theme. Getting this contract took a wait of two years, but it was so worth it!!!

Since everybody needs a break, even when doing something they love, how do you like to spend your time away from working?
Honestly, my brain is geared toward the writing at all times. I read, a lot, and even the leisure reading is usually connected to whatever I am either working on, or planning. Recently, I've spent a lot of time reading about Hawaii for a new project that will be linked to a morning television show over there! I'm going to be doing a new serialized romance novel called Good Morning, Hawaii, with my partner Branscombe Richmond. (Anyone who's ever watched Lorenzo Lamas in his old series Renegade will recognize Branscombe's name, I'm sure.) This is the second project with Branscombe; the first one is our on-going adventure serial for the American Motorcycle Company, Rebel Knight. The character of Nick Red Cloud, star of the serial, was first introduced to readers in a short novella published by Amber Quill Press called Rebel Heart. That book is still available at AQP, and the serial appears on the AMC1902 website. It's FREE, so I hope you'll take a few minutes to check it out!! (Gotta love those freebies -- and there are more on my website, too!)

So, other than constantly researching for new stories, I walk for miles in a local park and recharge, or sleep. Sleep is very good... Though I do admit to occasionally dreaming a new book into existence, too!!

I have found that some authors listen to music while they write. Do you listen to music or is it something that is distracting to you?
There is pretty well ALWAYS something on in the background. I find whatever I'm writing often has a musical counterpart, and when I find it, I load the music onto the computer and let it play as I write. If it's just mood music that I want, I put on environmental sounds, which I find soothing and relaxing, very conducive to creative writing. In fact, while I was listening to a new CD a year or so ago, I found a single song that inspired an entire novel, one called Sky-Hawke, that will be out next year sometime. Mind you, if the music is too loud, or just completely opposite to the mood in the scene I'm writing, then it can become a real annoyance. I adore the sounds of wolves, so they howl away quite often while I write! Movie soundtracks are wonderful, too. My favourites are the two Pirates of the Caribbean and the one for Cutthroat Island.

We all have one, so tell us yours. What is your favorite comfort food?
Popcorn. I can't get enough of the damn stuff... Preferably with a tall glass of Ginger-Ale or Pepsi!!

What is your favorite type of genre to write?
Historical, without a doubt. My two favourite time periods are American West, circa 1870-1890, and the same period in England, the Victorian era. I bet you guessed that already, though, huh? I write other periods, too, but those are the two that I always go back to when I really want to enjoy myself with a story. My other passion if for pirates, mostly those of the Spanish Main and the Caribbean. I've got several pirate tales in the works at the moment.

Oddly, I've noticed that there are more contemporary titles on my website than I realized, too. My first full-length erotic romance novel was released in August, and it's an action/adventure contemporary, with a hero who is one of the hottest I've ever created. If you like the strong, sexy, insatiable type, you'll love Max Richmonte, folks!
