Jewel Adams Interview
Today I am speaking with Jewel Adams.
Hello Jewel, thanks for taking time out to talk to Fallen Angel Reviews today.
Jewel, I cannot tell you how excited I am to get to interview you today. You have such a huge list of credits to your name, not to mention all the promotion and other things that you are so very much involved. I love the slogan on your website, Welcome to Romance with a Touch of Spice!
The viewers would love to hear about the real Jewel, would you like to share with us today, a day in the life of Jewel Adams?
A day in my life, now why does that make me want to laugh I can honestly say that nearly everyday in my life revolves are my writing. I plan my days around stories I need to get finished, the latest book I’m working on or editing that I must finish for a release.
The one thing that makes my day so special, yes special, is that I have all these fascinating characters in my life. You see, when I write I’m writing what the characters are telling me about their life, so one day I may be swimming in Sulkie Falls outside of Spellfire, TX. Or I could be sailing the high seas on the pirate Dragon’s ship as he races to save his love from Black Diamond. Sabers drawn, they pace out their steps and the swords clash!
Whew! As you can see, I can have some every exciting days, now the nights and all those spicy love scenes, oh my, that is another story all together
Tell the readers; what you would say is your favorite type of genre to write?
I love all the romance genres and write in many of them. I particularly love Time Travel Romance, now throw in some erotic love scenes and we have some very exciting stories. Time Travel will probably always be my favorite genre to write in, but I do love the lure of Gothic Romance. I read all I could find as a teen and it is a shame that they stopped printing them. Thankfully, we have revived many of the old genres and they are gaining ground every day on the internet.
Regardless, of which romance genre I am writing in at the moment, all my stories are filled with adventure, sometimes a lot of danger or just a smidgen, and love, oh my yes, they are filled with the thrill of finding love, sharing the wonder and holding on to the magic.
I know you always have some projects in the works. Would you like to tell us a little about your latest release?
The readers are going to love my next release, Moondock. Moondock is a true fantasy romance. The story is based on an entire society of women, a beast has been dwindling their numbers so they send out their best women from each sect to find the mythical Selams of ancient times and the world came alive in this story, right down to the magic and animals.
Moondock is an exciting read and a new genre for me. I’ve worked on this story for a long time and I’m very excited to see it published. The book should be released in a couple weeks from Midnight Showcase.com
MOONDOCK by Jewel Adams
Chosen by the High Council to find the ancient Selams and save the Nemow race from destruction, Melane melds the inherited magical powers of her Syron birth mother and her training as Captain of the Lamar Grand Guard, to confront the men of childhood myths. Melane learns that neither magic nor her warrior skills can protect her from Wylan, King of Moondock, the man that now claims her as his own in a ritual as old as time.
What or when was the catalyst that started you thinking you could write and get published?
I have always been an avid reader, one too many wall bangers made me decide I could do better and I started writing back in my 20’s, which means I’ve been writing now for over 30 years. Let’s hope after all that time I have got it right lol.
Published is such an encompassing word to me. I think I felt published the first time I sent my chapters out over the net for free. I used to serialize them and send them out weekly, and I’d do it again. You see, for me, as a writer the one thing I want more than anything is for a person to read all these marvelous stories that I write. Correction, the stories that I hear and write down as fast as possible.
I have seen that dream come true. I do know that I’ll never stop writing, and I’ll always want someone to read my stories. If I never “published” again, I would just start giving them away to the readers. They are what creates an author.
Do you draw your characters from people you know?
No, not really, though I suspect a person that has made an impression on me might lend their characteristics to a character. But ninety-nine percent of the time the characters tell me who they are, from their likes, dislikes, looks, right down to the character flaws that make them special and unique. I have this time at the beginning of the story when one of the main characters will come to me, usually the heroine, and she will begin to introduce herself and her story. It becomes very intimate, very personal and very intriguing for me as the author to get to know this person.
Once the hero shows up he will usually take over for a while to introduce himself to me as well, and give his side of the story. Now, this can lead to so much excitement, especially when these two face off and start getting to know each other. This is when the writing usually become a fury of excitement and it is all I can do to keep up!
Do you worry that someone might think that one of your characters is them?
No, never, my characters are so unique and such individuals of their own that anyone would be hard placed to find themselves in them. I would hope that as the readers will emerge themselves into the story that they would feel every emotion, every ounce of power and excitement, hate, anger and love, that my characters experience in their story.
Do you put yourself into your character sketches?
As you can tell, I write much differently than many authors, I don’t plot, I don’t put together a character sketch or decide on their traits. My characters just come to me and they are who they are. I do think that we all have our morals ingrained in us and my characters are no different, they come with high standards, goals and dreams. And when the villain enters he is a villain of the cruelest kind, he too comes with all his traits and terrible values that drive him to act against my heroine and hero.
Midnight Showcase is such a great publishing house. What prompted you to seek Internet publishing?
I personally sought internet publishing for the freedom it allows me as an author. There is just something wrong when an editor or publisher tells you how you need to change your story or characters to fit what they are looking for. I couldn’t accept this side of the publishing business and so I walked away from NY pubs and came to the internet. I’ve never been sorry, in fact, I love seeing my stories on the net.
Now, don’t confuse writing for a theme with someone changing your whole storyline to their likes or dislikes. I write to themes such as in Spellfire or one of the Digests releases for Midnight Showcase. They are fun to write, like in BLUE NOIR that will be out in a few weeks, the theme is tied into an old movie, well my story takes that movie and my characters end up back in the Old West! DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC? Will be out in a couple weeks:
DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC? By Jewel Adams
When Ali plays a wishing game with her god-daughter nothing could have prepared her for the trip back in time, where arrows fly and men are as large and powerful as the great wild west!
Midnight Showcase is special, they are a high quality publisher that is open to all the possible stories out there. They are, and will continue to be, a marvelous success and I hope I continue to be with them.
If you haven’t heard about Spellfire, Texas you really need to go to Midnight Showcase and find out about this special town. I have many stories in the ongoing series of Spellfire and I so enjoy the artistic freedom Midnight Showcase has allowed me as an author to have with my Spellfire stories. Fantasy is so unique and open in the same breath, the characters created for Spellfire are as special as the concept of Spellfire.
My Spellfire characters range from a moon fairy, Moonshyne or Shyne, to an Elfen Warrior – Danuelle, a nymph/dryads — Bess, to my latest Gnome pharmacist Karl Novac, and many more, I have so much fun writing these stories. Spellfire Hearts 2 will be out soon and is filled with some great reads, look for Molly and Karl, you’ll love them.
Do you have problems promoting yourself? Would you care to share some of the avenues you've used in your publishing and do they work?
Promotion is the other side of publishing that many authors hit once their work is released and it isn’t easy to promote. Not only is it hard, but it goes against the grain to stand up and shout “Look here, I’m an author of this absolutely, fabulous, exciting love story that will melt your socks off ” Ahh, but we have to do it lol.
I have and do use all the tools on the internet for promotion. I am an internet author, my venue is the net and my readers just need to be told I’m here. To do this I have been quite innovated. I have done a radio show for authors called Jewel’s Way —The Romance Authors’ Radio Show. I did the show for over a year and loved it, unfortunately my family needed my time. It is hard to give up something like a radio show, but sometimes you have to set priorities. I do know that there are many radio shows now available for authors to get their work out there, so be sure to check them out and listen.
One thing I am not and that is shy. You can’t be shy in publishing. I think the readers will see my name out there and I’m always around on the internet to talk to readers. So don’t you be shy, one thing, this author loves to hear is what you thought of my stories, talk to me jeweladams10@yahoo.com
If you had the opportunity to speak to a "budding" author, what advice would you give them, and what pitfalls would you share?
First, make sure you join a critique group of your genre. The input is invaluable, writing is an ongoing craft, one you constantly keep learning. I have found there are actually stages that an author goes through. First is completing that first book. Next is realizing you aren’t done with that first book. No, now you need to edit and that can really be difficult. You see, it is very hard for an author to see their own mistakes, hence the need for a critique group or one very fine and honest editor.
The most difficult phase of writing is knowing that you really do need an edit. You could have edited that book a hundred times and it still won’t be finished. That second pair of trained eyes is really necessary and you better be ready because they will normally find things you totally missed. But open your mind and listen, listen to what they are telling you, even if you don’t agree, if someone points out a problem it is a problem and you need to fix it.
Last, don’t give up. If you have writing in your blood you need to write to survive. You won’t be whole unless you write. Just keep writing, explore the genres out there until you find the one that works for you. Read your favorite authors and then study them, learn from them, find out how they handle dialogue or action, scene changes or changes of POV in the same scene. Learn your craft and keep learning!
If you could change one thing about the way you write, what would it be?
Have any unfinished projects sitting around that you have put on the backburner?
Hmm, what to change? I think I would wish that all these hand written pages I have of novels all written, but the last chapter (there is a good reason for that), were typed into my computer.
You see, I used to hand write all my novels, now most of these are over 100K that is a lot of notebook paper LOL. Trouble is I can’t read my own writing on some pages, I wrote so fast that it looks like a wind came through and swished my words away! LoL. So, yeah, I’d love some good fairy to come down and put all those novels onto my computer for me.
I do write most all the new stories on the computer now If you want to know why I don’t write the last chapter of all these novels…write me and I’ll let you in on my secret.

I’m back to writing full time now and I’ve lots of new stories coming out in the next few weeks. Look for MOONDOCK my Fantasy (sensual romance), DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC? is a time travel sensual romance coming out towards the end of January in the Blue Noir 1 digest, I’ve also a story Purrly…Gnome Magic that will be in the Spellfire Hearts Digest in February. In March HH Self (Vincent) and I will be releasing BRANDY SHOTS a fun, very erotic romance digest filled with short stories about “I want a Cowboy” and “I want a Cowgirl”, from the woman’s and the man’s perspective This is a must read, ladies. You won’t want to miss reading what a man feels while making love to his cowgirl or how far the lady will go to get that cowboy!
For fun: What is your most secret indulgence?
Chocolate. You have to love it and hate it, but you know those Hershey Symphony bars with the toffee and almond chips, yeah, those are my downfall LOL.
