Sarah Dobbs Interview

Today I am speaking with Sarah Dobbs.

Hi Sarah! And welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews! It is great to have you with us. Thank you for taking time out of your workday to answer some questions. The readers are anxious to learn something about Sarah Dobbs.

Sarah, I read Game, Set, Love Match, and enjoyed it. Tell me which new release would you like to discuss with us today? We are anxious to hear about your characters.
Thank you! I'd love to talk about The Perfect Man, which was actually released as an e-book last year, but is due out in paperback very soon. It follows Harriet, a waitress/aspiring artist, as she tries to find the perfect man to take to her ex-fiancé’s wedding. It's a romantic comedy and, hopefully, fun to watch Harriet trying to decide on her Perfect Man: Sensitive Nicholas, sexy Frenchman Julian, or Salesman John. It's available from Freya's Bower or All Romance E-books.

Do you have some more projects or soon to be releases that you would love to share?
I'm currently working on the second book for my series The Witch of Wolf Hill from Chippewa Publishing. It's called the Time for Magic and is under my fantasy pseudonym Sara Jane Fox. It follows Brangwen Black as she is about to embark on her magical training in order to help fight the balance between wolf and witch. Unfortunately, Devon White, the guy Brangwen loves, is a werewolf and they have a blossoming love that can never be realized.

It should be available mid 2007.

What is your favorite type of genre to write?
It just depends on my mood. Romance is nice to write after a heartbreak, when you can at least pretend to yourself that there is such a thing as The One, or The Perfect Man, no matter how flawed he is!

What genre is your favorite to read?
I used to love science fiction, but at the minute I'm enjoying a lot of the novels I should have read when I was younger, like The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. I'm also excited by translated contemporary fiction. It's just so stylish!

When you are deciding your genre, do your characters decide for you?
Absolutely. Characters decide everything, well, not everything, but they are key. Sometimes, the author can have a little input though. Throw in an unexpected disaster or mysterious new man and sit back and watch how they react. I like to keep things moving and organic. That way, it's never boring for me to write either.

Do you see yourself in any of the characters in your books?
I think I'm the eternal romantic and eternal optimist, no matter what life throws at you. Like all my characters, I think I'm searching for that person who makes me sparkle. Aren't we all?

How do you feel about having your own books reviewed and what value, if any, do you get from them?
I love reviews. Some of them are a little disappointing, but I've only ever once defended myself, because that's completely pointless. If anything, reviews make you want to work harder next time. They expose the things you know you haven't worked hard enough on, and they also reveal your strengths. You get to know what people do or don't like.

If you could go back in time, where would you go and when? What is one thing you would want to take with you?
I'd go to 20s London and dance the Charleston all night. I'd take my notebook so I could scribble down what it was like afterwards.

While writing, how does the story develop for you? Do you go from start to finish or create scenes as they come to you?
I create scenes as they come to me. I do plan in advance sometimes, but it tends to be a brief sketch that is very flexible. I can't work any other way.

Now that you are published, where do you see yourself going now?
I just want to keep writing, doing good work and setting myself new challenges. I hope to do a PhD in the near future and teach other aspiring writers.

Could you describe for us your idea of the perfect man?
My ideals have changed! Now I want trustworthy and nice rather than dangerously attractive. Ask me again in a week though and I'll probably give you a different description. The most important thing for me is that someone is real, which actually sounds corny, but the amount of 'fiction' I've heard out of men's mouths lately is unreal!

What would your readers be surprised to learn about Sarah?
I used to work with snakes! I used to want to be a nun! (Very briefly).

Do you have a habit that you know you will never change?
I will always be too sensitive - ME: Remember that thing you said about me in 1999, do you still think of me like that? I could do with lightening up sometimes.

Do you have any pet peeves that you would like to share?
Liars. People who don't eat bread. Women who rely on 'cute' to wrap men around their fingers. Men who fall for it. Embrace your brain, not your breasts! (I think I've had too much sugar today). Lastly, Glossy girl's magazines full of airbrushed and elongated, distorted models. They should come with a health warning, like cigarettes. I love nothing more than flipping through Cosmo, but I'm not 12 and impressionable. And beauty doesn't come in a photo-manipulation package; it comes from your heart.

Do you have anything else you would like to share with your readers?
A bit of amateur philosophy for you: I just had a crash with a fire engine on Monday, so live every day like you mean it! And, a variation on 'don't put Baby in the corner'; 'don't let anybody put you down'. If they do, put them out of your life and out of your mind.

For Fun: What is your favorite comfort food?
Oh, I can't choose that! Either Chinese char sui baus and sui mais with loads of soy sauce, or chips and gravy from the local chippy.

For Fun: If you could go anywhere and visit for a week where would you go?
I always say New York here, or some quaint, arty, European city, but actually I'd just love to go and visit one of my girlfriends in Maine. She's cancelled her wedding and is going through such a rough time. I wish so much that I could get over there and comfort her!

Do you have a website other than www.sarahdobbs.com that you would like to share with your readers?
Yes, I've recently been introduced to the joys of myspace and don't know how I lived without it. Add me here: http://www.myspace.com/sarah_dobbs Thanks for talking to me, I enjoyed it!
