Laura Hamby Interview

Hello Laura and welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews. Your readers are curious to learn more about Laura Hamby.

If we were to follow you for a day, what kind of day would we find in the life of Laura Hamby?
Oh boy. It would depend on the day. I recently rejoined the work force, part-time, working at my younger sons' school, so I'm busy with that during school hours on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. While Tuesday and Thursday are "home" days for me, I've yet to be home on both days since I started back to work. LOL! However, I still have the flexibility to go on fieldtrips with my kids and write and edit. You would find that I never have enough chocolate and that when I'm writing, I like to listen to the same CD over and over and over.

Laura you are a very busy woman. With a string of credits to your name, you now have another book out, Cupid on a Mission, a very sweet read indeed. Would you care to enlighten the readers the making of this wonderful book?
Cupid on a Mission was born last fall, so to speak, when my publisher mentioned she'd like to have a Valentine's Day themed novel for February. Cupid popped right into my head and introduced himself. He told me right away that he loves M & Ms, that rascal! I had a lot of fun writing Cupid on a Mission, for many reasons: a dual set of heroes and heroines, not to mention Cupid himself.

When you are deciding your genre, do your characters decide for you?
I love to laugh along the way when reading romances, so I tend to lean towards writing romantic comedies more often than not. I always write romance, so the characters don't decide that, but they do often decide other things!

What prompted you to seek Internet publishing?
I know my publisher from a writing board we both frequented over the years, and watched with interest when she opened By Grace Publications. When she mentioned the contest for the first Brides and Bouquets anthology, I decided to enter, just for fun. That's what started it all.

Do you have problems promoting yourself? What are some of the avenues you've used and do they work?
The biggest problem I run into in promoting is time. I have an active family, as well a job outside the home, and being executive assistant to my publisher. I really like websites.

Do you feel reviews are good for your work? Do you look forward to obtaining reviews for your stories?
I love reviews. I do feel they are good for promotional reasons. I always look forward to hearing what readers have to say about my stories.

Would you change anything about the way you write?
Just the amount of time I have to devote to it. I'd love to write 8 hours a day. Or more.

Is there one habit you have that you will never change?
I'm an unashamed, unabashed chocoholic. That will never change.

Do you have a favorite part in writing? A least part in writing?
I like the entire creative process of writing. I like getting to know my characters and finding out what they have to say, what kind of people they are and all that good stuff. I really enjoy creating settings, too. Least favorite part: when the Muse takes off for the Bahamas without me. Getting a story back on the right track is probably my least favorite thing to do, especially when the story had been going so beautifully before I hit the snag.

Do you miss your characters when you are finished with their tale? Any that you wish you could write about again?
Yes, I do miss my characters when I'm finished writing their romances. I'm not sure I want to write about again, unless it's including them as secondaries in a sequel. There are settings I've used that I'd like to use again. The town of Glen Meadow, for example: the small town I created with Shara Jones and Meg Allison for our Blue Plate Special: Pops' Girls series. I'm currently writing another continuity series, this time with Susan Atwood, and I'd LOVE to use the town in that WIP again.

Are there any groups you belong that you would like to share with your readers?
The By Grace Readers' Loop and the Moonlit Romance Readers' Loop.

Do you have any unfinished projects sitting around?
Oh yeah, I do. Absolutely. I just skimmed through a novel I'd started writing last year. I have 2 contracted works in progress to finish and many, many ideas.

When composing, do you have a certain regime that you use, perhaps, music, soft candles, chocolate or herbal tea?
Yes, I like to have music playing when I write, and I often do start the creative juices flowing with a bite of chocolate now and again.

What really draws your attention to a good book?
A good story draws my attention: the characters, the setting, how well the story is told.

What would the readers be surprised to learn about you?
I'm impatient.

For Fun: Which do you enjoy best, soothing bubble baths or hot showers?
Soothing bubble baths, of course. I've found that the books get wet and the chocolate melts in the shower.
