Cheryl Dragon Interview

Hello Cheryl, and welcome to FAR, it is good to have you with us today. Your readers are curious to learn more about Cheryl Dragon.
Thanks for having me!!

Cheryl, why don’t we begin by discussing your new release, An Extreme Haunting, your BSDM Paranormal. I believe this one has to do with an Irish Castle that might be haunted? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I had a lot of fun writing this story. To take a classic haunted castle and mix in kinky ghosts and kinkier humans made it perfect for Halloween!

The official blurb is:
Sean O’Brien inherits an old Irish castle believing the rumors of its haunting by an ancestor who kept a harem are ridiculous—until the ghostly influence destroys his inhibitions. His Dom side is exposed and he’s taking everything he wants from the sexy submissive ghost hunter alone with him.

Dana Rayne is hired to cleanse the castle of ghosts but these are stronger than any she’s ever faced. Sean is stunned by their effect on him but Dana is more than willing to be the sub in Sean’s kinky dungeon built for sex. The ghosts refuse to leave and grow stronger as Halloween nears. As Dana and Sean explore their deepest fantasies, the ghosts attempt to act out their own deadly desires.

Then in November you have another Contemporary Romantica release – One Hot Experiment. I believe it has a bit of seduction going on in it, why not give us a glimpse of what we can expect from it, too.
One Hot Experiment is all about seduction, revenge sex and unexpected love. Maddie is a genius who works in a think tank, but when a man who ruined her college years enters her present, she’s determined to even the score. Seduce him with the help of a pheromone-laced perfume and dump him the way he got her dumped. Tim never meant to mess things up for Maddie and he wants her, but when he finds out about her games, he ups the stakes. The games of seduction only escalate from there.

How much of your personality and life experiences come out in your writing?
My personality does come through in small doses. On the other hand, my life is much duller than the fiction I write.

When did you first think about writing and what prompted you to submit your first manuscript?
I’ve always wanted to write and have been writing since high school. After college, with a degree in business, I wanted to see if I had potential in the writing area.

Generally, how long does it take you to write a book?
That depends on the length of the book. A novella can be done in a month while a full-length novel is more likely to take two months.

Do you have a set schedule for writing?
There’s no set schedule. Priorities shift with what’s going on. Sometimes edits are at the top of the list. Sometimes I’m developing notes on ideas. When I’m writing, I try to consistently produce but the only way to handle a day job, writing career and life is to be flexible. Otherwise I’d be crazy by now!

What is your writing routine once you start a book?
Generally I’ll write at least a scene a day once I’ve started a book. I want to get that first draft down and then I can see what works, what doesn’t, and what needs to be added.

Do you have many interruptions after you begin writing?
Usually I don’t have too many interruptions. You can never predict it but I do what I can to keep them low. I don’t answer the phone or check email until I’ve got at least a scene done. Then I can take a break to refill the water bottle, stretch my legs, and check messages.

Where do your ideas come from?
Anywhere and everywhere! I normally a character shows up in my mind and I build a story around them by finding their mate and figuring out what they must overcome to be together. I love twisting around standard plots to make them unexpected and yet familiar.

If you could go back in time, what time and place would you enjoy visiting and is there anything you would change?
I love reading about the Regency period. I don’t write historical romances but I do enjoy reading them. I’m not sure I’d actually want to go there though. Women haven’t had it very good in most periods of history so it might be a nice place to visit but I wouldn’t want to stay. The scary part about changing things is you never what unintended effects it’ll have on the future. I’d certainly like to see women’s rights come about a lot sooner in history!

What really draws your attention to a good book, the cover art, the genre, the author or the blurb?
The cover art is that first impression so you can’t escape it. The blurb gives you a taste of what’s inside. Both of those are important. The genre is the easy part, either you like a genre or you don’t. There are few authors I’ll buy automatically but not many (my to be read pile is huge).

Do you have any other website or blog, myspace that you would like to share with us besides this one? www.cheryldragon.com
No, my website is pretty much the place to find out everything.

Do you ever make New Year’s Resolutions or just brush that thought aside?
New Year’s is a weird holiday for me. It’s not just a holiday, it’s also my birthday (yep, New Year’s Day). So resolutions are mixed in with the trauma of being another year older. The good thing is most people are tired from partying so I can fly under the radar of birthdays. I try not to make grand resolutions. Just some goals for the year…

For Fun: Camping in the mountains or going on a ski trip?
I’ll take door #3…Las Vegas. I’m not a nature person. I’ll take a nice hotel room on the Strip with fabulous shows, great shopping and excellent food in the neon oasis. I’m not a gambler but I much prefer Vegas with a view of the desert to actually being out in the desert.

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Ben & Jerry’s Brownie Batter. It cures everything!

What would you classify as your favorite time of day?
I’m definitely a morning person. If I could give up the day job, I’d be far more productive in my writing by making the most of that time of day. I wish I could be night owl but I make the best of my creative time.
